Works commence on Gourlay Road Duplication
Construction works are underway
to complete the duplication of
Gourlay Road in Taylors Hill.
The duplication of Gourlay Road,
between Hume Drive and Taylors
Road, will involve the construction
of a new northbound carriageway
and the partial reconstruction and
asphalt overlay of the existing
southbound carriageway.
The work
includes
s e r v i c e
relocations,
underground
drainage, kerb
and channel,
footpath
works, bicycle
lanes, public
lighting,
signage, line marking and the
installation of traffic signals at the
intersection of Gourlay Road and
Lancefield Drive.
The project also includes the
landscaping of Gourlay Road
between Grevillea Close and
Taylors Road.
This project is required to address
traffic congestion associated with
continuing increases in traffic
volumes on Gourlay Road.
Mayor of Melton Shire Council, Cr
Justin Mammarella JP, said it was
important to develop infrastructure
that kept up with the demands of
the Shireʼs growing population.

1 of the duplication works was
completed in 2008 and stage 2

The contract for the works was
awarded to BMD Constructions Pty
Ltd in December.

The Caroline Springs Seniors
Group Inc is on the move. During
March the group celebrated their
second birthday.
They also achieved another
important milestone in reaching
100 members.
As a consequence of that
achievement, the group are
moving into larger premises at
Springside Pavilion.

22 Becca Way Hillside. The
Springside Children's Community
Centre.

Easter bin
collections
There will be minor changes to
waste collections during the
upcoming Easter holidays.
Due to the Good Friday public
holiday, no garbage, green waste
or recycling collections will take
place on Friday 6 April 2012.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr
Justin Mammarella JP, said
collections usually occurring on
Friday 6 April would take place
one day later.
“If your bins are usually collected
on a Friday, itʼs important to
remember to put them out for
collection on Saturday 7 April,” the
Mayor said.
“Garbage bins not put out for
collection on Saturday 7 April will
not be collected until the next
Friday, 13 April 2012. The same
applies to your recycle and green
waste bins, if they are not put out
for collection, they will not be
collected until the following
fortnight being Friday 20 April
2012,” Cr Mammarella said.
Bins must be put out the night
before or by 6am the morning of
the day they are due to be
collected.
The Melton Recycling Centre in
Ferris Road will also be closed on
Good Friday 6 April. It will be open
Saturday 7, Sunday 8 and
Monday 9 April.

"Spirit of Relay"
Melton 2012 award
Caroline Springs Running Group
participated in the 2012 Relay for
life event held on the 25th and
26th of February 2012 at Tabcorp
Park Melton.
Caroline Springs Running Group
had a participant running on field
for the whole duration of the 18
hour event and completed 255
laps (Approximately over 255km)
and raised $1380.00.
"Spirit of Relay" was awarded to
the team. It was a great team effort
specially running on a hot 38
degree windy day. Well done
team. Bringing the spirit of fighting
against Cancer and having hope
for the future.

Residents reminded
to register
furry friends
Melton Shire Council is reminding
residents that animal registrations
are due this month.
Under State legislation, every dog or
cat over three months of age and
residing in the Shire of Melton must
be registered with Council. Every dog
or cat, which has been registered,
must be re-registered by 10 April
each year. All animals that are being
registered for the first time or have
moved from another municipality
must also be microchipped.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr
Justin Mammarella JP, said Council
encouraged responsible pet
ownership.
“Itʼs important that everyone who
owns a dog or cat aged over three
months old has it registered with
Council. There are a number of vets
across the Shire where you can take
your animal for microchipping.
“When an impounded animal has
been microchipped, it takes just a few
seconds to find out who the animal is
registered to and the owners can be
contacted quickly.”
To avoid any penalties for
unregistered pets, you can obtain an
animal registration form from the
Melton Shire Council Civic Centres in
Melton and Caroline Springs or
download the animal registration
form from our website.
Dog registration fees vary from $17
to $120, the average cost is $30,
there are discounts for pensionerʼs
dogs and no costs for guide dogs.
Cat registration fees vary from $9 to
$44, with the average cost being $16.

Community groups, together with Council and State
Government representatives, gathered in March at
Springside Community Pavilion in Caroline Springs to
celebrate its official opening.
The community pavilion complements the nearby
synthetic playing surfaces and features a large
function/activity room, meeting rooms, change rooms,
kitchen facilities and public amenities.
Melton Shire Council Mayor, Cr Justin Mammarella,
JP said the pavilion would provide much needed
facilities for the Shireʼs fast growing community.
“Springside Community Pavilion represents Councilʼs
commitment to provide high quality facilities to
promote community health and wellbeing,” the Mayor
said.
“The Community Pavilion is the final piece of the
jigsaw that makes up the Springside Community Hub.
Having so many facilities in one location offers
convenience for our residents and ensures they are
provided with services that are inclusive and
supportive of their needs.”
The Springside Community Pavilion was constructed
to provide facilities for a variety of community groups
to utilise. The community pavilion provides meeting
rooms for community and interest groups and users of
the outdoor recreational areas.
Through its advocacy to the State Government,
Council received $500,000 in funding towards the
construction of the $2.6M facility.

grand opening of councils $2.6
million Springside Community
Pavilion which is the final piece
that makes up the Springside
Community Hub in Caroline
Springs.
The precinct boasts high quality
local infrastructure that has
been developed over the past
three years at a total cost of
$7.7 million.

contribution, the precinct
includes, Synthetic surfaces to
the cost of $1.8 million,
Springside Childrenʼs
Community Centre which
includes childrenʼs services
such as a kindergarten,
occasional care, maternal and

This facility gives local families
better access to health and
education programs for our
youngest residents and
reaffirms councils dedication to
improving the health and
wellbeing of our diverse
community by providing quality
infrastructure and services for
our residents, businesses and
community groups in the
municipality. This facility is a

Community Road Safety Forum
Melton Shire Council is holding a Community Road Safety Forum on
Wednesday 18 April, 7 – 9.30pm at the Community Hall, 232 High Street,
Melton.
Residents are encouraged to attend, especially teenage drivers and their
parents.
Cr Justin Mammarella JP, Mayor of Melton Shire Council said the aim of
the event was to enhance peopleʼs understanding of road trauma.
“Too many accidents happen on our roads, Council is committed to
improving road safety and reducing the road toll,” said the Mayor.
Guest speakers will include Chief Magistrate and former Coroner Noreen
Toohey, Christine Harrison from Road Trauma Support Services, as well
as representatives from the Melton Highway Patrol Unit.
The forum will provide information on road rules, road safety and the
effects of road trauma and how to avoid a collision.
Cr Mammarella: “I encourage residents to learn more about road rules,
road safety and the effects of road trauma, including serious injury and
fatal collisions.”
Free showbags with brochures and educational material will be available.

Clean Up Australia Day on the 4th
March was great. Three groups
operated in Caroline Springs and we
even had a family of helpers from
Burnside Heights. It is great to get
together and improve our
environment while engaging with our
neighbours.
I helped two of the groups and Iʼd like
to congratulate all the workers for their
efforts. It was suggested on the day
by one of the coordinators, Noel Bell,
that a clean-up once every few

months should be achievable, not just
waiting until Clean Up Australia Day.
So letʼs do it and I propose that on the
first Sunday of June, September and
December we get together and spend
a couple of hours cleaning up
Caroline Springs! As we get closer to
those dates I will place further
information in the Caroline Springs
Community Update.
For all that we live in a great place we
all have the chance to make it better.
Iʼd like to encourage all of the
mothers, fathers, grandparents,
relatives and friends who have a role
in taking the kids to school to walk
them there or at least to park some
distance away and walk.
I understand that when the weather is
bad the need to get as close as
possible , however letʼs look at the
benefits from walking; itʼs healthier or
us all, we pollute the air less by
reducing car usage, we reduce the
traffic jams surrounding our schools
and most importantly the school
surrounds become much safer.
Please give it a go to benefit us all
especially the kids.
I believe we have had some good
outcomes from my request last month
to pass to me the details of hoon
drivers. This is an ongoing request
and I will pass your anonymous
details to the police who keep
databases of identified hoons and the
police will keep a watch out.

Walking towards good health
A group of residents at Caesia Gardens retirement village
are adopting healthier lifestyle changes one step at a time.
The residents have organised a regular walking group –
not only as a means to stay healthy, but also as a way to
make new friends.
The group has quickly grown in popularity and now 10 to
15 people take part each week – ranging in age from their
mid 50s through to their late 70s.
With Caesia Gardens retirement village surrounded by
wetlands and scrub, the residents donʼt have to go far to
find great walking tracks and routes.
“At Caroline Springs we are really spoilt for choice in
terms of location,” said Village Manager Cassandra
Rhodes.
“Importantly, the residents taking part in the group are
seeing the results of the regular exercise, with many
commenting that they now have more energy each day.
“Itʼs also a great way to keep social – Iʼd certainly
encourage others in the community to start up a walking
group of their own!”

2012 has been a very busy year so far with
WSAR rescuing many different animals. We
have had large numbers of calls from the
community requesting assistance. We canʼt
mention every rescue that has taken place so
we have chose to highlight three different
rescues that have taken place so far this year.
In January WSAR responded to a house within
the Melton Council area where a mother cat
had given birth to her kittens in the roof. The
kittens had fallen down into the walls and were
stuck for at least 48 hours before being
rescued. Once all 5 kittens were rescued they
were reunited with mum. We are pleased to
announce that the little kittens are almost ready
for adoption.
In February WSAR responded to an emergency
call in Caroline Springs where a native Black
Swan had been severely injured. After the swan
was rescued it was taken to a veterinarian
where it was assessed unfortunately due to the
massive injuries and the fact it had no chance
of being rehabilitated it had it had to be
euthanized. The vet was of the opinion the
swan had been run over and left to die. We
would like to remind everyone living in and
around Caroline Springs that Caroline Springs
is also the home of a number of species of
water birds and to please be mindful when
driving near waterways of native birds.
In March 2012 we responded to a call about a
kitten that was very unwell, dehydrated and had
fallen into a water drain within Caroline Springs.
We were able to locate and rescue the kitten.
Although very week at first, the kitten with some
loving tender care from one of our very
dedicated foster carerʼs has been able to make
a fantastic recovery. We hope to have the kitten
ready for adoption in the very near future.
Finally we currently have a number of very
friendly kittens available for adoption to loving
responsible only homes. All kittens come fully
vet checked and given a clean bill of health,
vaccinated, microchipped, DESEXED, flee and
worm treated. All the vet paperwork is provided
to the new owner. If you or your family is
interested in providing one of these little kittens
a home please contacts us.

Clean Up Australia Day
Great Success
Clean Up Australia Day held on 2, 3 and 4 March this year
saw eight Melton Shire schools and twenty one
community sites participating.
The Mayor of Melton Shire Council, Cr Justin Mammarella
JP said that more than 1000 students, close to 100
teachers and 350 participants took part in the event and
collected more than 500 bags of rubbish and recycling.
“Council would like to thank everyone who participated. It
was a great community effort,” Cr Mammarella said.
Councilʼs waste and recycling contractor Urban Services
Solutions and Councilʼs Open Space Improvement team
provided a free rubbish pick up for the sites and the
schools.
Melton Rotary provided a barbeque at Hannah Watts Park
in Melton for all participants.

EASTER TIME IN THE VET CLINIC
Itʼs Easter! For most people, Easter brings thoughts of
fluffy Easter bunnies, hot cross buns and chocolate
Easter eggs. Unfortunately the word ʻEasterʼ for a vet
clinic usually means plenty of chocolate toxicity and lily
toxicity cases!
At Caroline Springs Vet Clinic we
often see cases of chocolate
toxicity in dogs during Easter,
usually because the dog has
gotten into a shopping bag or
cupboard and has guzzled down
an Easter egg or two! Chocolate
contains theobromine, which is
toxic to dogs. It causes restlessness, anxiety, drooling and
vomiting; which can progress to panting, heart
arrhythmias and seizures. The darker the chocolate, the
less a dog needs to eat to become sick, with cooking
chocolate being the worst. White chocolate is unlikely to
cause toxicity.
The best thing to do if your dog or cat has eaten chocolate
is to bring them to the vet clinic immediately. The longer
you wait the more toxin is absorbed into the body. Also, be
aware of the foil and plastic wrappers around these
Easter treats – these are often gobbled up along with the
chocolate and can form an obstruction inside the stomach
or intestines and have to be surgically removed.

Easter lilies are popular during Easter, however they may
also be popular with the household cat! Many species of
lily are poisonous to cats, who are inclined to play with
the petals, leaves or stamen and have been known to
have a bit of a munch. The toxin present in the lily causes
ʻtubular necrosisʼ or damage to the kidney, leading
ultimately to kidney failure. In kidney failure the animal
cannot concentrate its urine to conserve water and is at
high risk of dying from dehydration. If your cat has been
playing with lilies or has chewed on one it is best to bring
him straight to the clinic.
Macadamia nuts are also a popular snack during Easter
– however they may be fatal to your dog. This includes
anything containing macadamia nuts such as shortbreads
and biscuits. Cooked nuts are still toxic. The dog may
show signs after eating anywhere between 5 and 40
macadamia nuts, depending on the size of the dog.
Poisoning causes weakness and wobbling in the back
legs, progressing to the front legs, joint pain and swelling
and sometimes vomiting. If you suspect that your dog has
eaten macadamias it is best to take your dog straight to
the vet clinic.
So this Easter, remember to hide the chocolate Easter
eggs, hide the macadamias and keep the cats away from
the Easter lilies! We hope that you and your pets have a
lovely, safe and healthy Easter break!

relationships with local Council,

others. These relationships can
facilitate opportunities for the people
we support and partnerships for
Merrimu.
An example of the positive impact
that community development can
have on an individual, an
organisation, local government and
the community:
Sally, chairperson of Merrimuʼs Focus
Group has been working on an
Accessible Menu (including large text,
pictures and Braille) for two pubs in
Bacchus Marsh. This project is a
collaboration with Moorabool Shire
Council. Through our relationship
with Council and theirs with The
Laurels (Bacchus Marsh Community
College), we are now investigating
ways that Sally can be supported with
the technological side of producing
the menus, in the local community.
We are meeting with The Laurels to
see whether Sally could receive some
assistance through one of their
computer courses.
The end result will benefit the
community through providing an
accessibility/communication aid for
people with vision impairments,
limited literacy and those from diverse
cultural backgrounds. Sally will also
benefit from learning some new skills,
accomplishing a huge goal and
meeting new people. The benefits
have a snowball effect for all involved.

Diastasis recti (also known as abdominal muscle
separation or AMS) is a condition where your recti
(or “six pack”) muscles separate more than normal
after giving birth. During the later stages of
pregnancy, as your uterus grows, it places enough
pressure outwards against your stomach muscles
to cause the separation. This occurs in approx.
two-thirds of pregnant women, is quite normal, and
usually corrects itself in the first few days, weeks,
or months after giving birth.
For some mothers however, this doesnʼt correct properly. The recti muscles are
important, so depending on the amount of separation, can impact on your bodyʼs
“core-stability”, the function and control of your bladder, the way in which you hold
and support your spine, your pelvis, your organs and your overall posture.
Who is more likely to develop AMS?
• If youʼve had separation in previous pregnancies
• Genetics (this is just how some womenʼs bodies respond to being pregnant)
• Very small/petite frame
• Poor abdominal tone / core stability
• Having twins or triplets or big babies
• Naturally poor posture
How do I know if I have AMS?
Lie on your back, with your knees bent, and your feet flat on the floor. Place your
hand on the middle of your tummy with your fingers together and pointing down
towards your belly button. Curl your chest towards your pelvis (like doing a mini situp).
If during this action you felt the space widen by more than 2 finger-widths, then
it is considered to be AMS.
Movements to avoid with AMS
• Strong coughing (hold your tummy if you need to cough)
• When getting up from lying, roll to one side and use your arms to help push
yourself up…do not try and sit straight up
• Any exercises that cause your tummy to “bulge” out
• Lifting or carrying heavy weights, or poor bending techniques when picking up
your baby
• Any exercise where you are lying backwards over a swiss ball, and some yoga
poses that stretch the tummy
What can I do about AMS?
Firstly, donʼt be alarmed! Remember itʼs quite common, and only requires
professional advice if, after a month after childbirth the space does not appear to be
narrowing. If in doubt, speak to your doctor, whoʼll advise you on whether you need
to see a physio. A physio will guide you through exercises that are important to
reduce AMS (or speed up recovery from AMS). A specialised abdominal wrap can
also be prescribed by the physio in conjunction with the AMS exercises (I say “in
conjunction with AMS exercises” because otherwise your own muscles get weaker
and can worsen the AMS). Usually, the longer you leave it, the longer it takes to
improve.
Lastly, please remember that the advice given above is basic. Itʼs always important
to seek advice from your doctor or one of our physios for a thorough assessment
and management. Always avoid seeking answers from online forums, as they can
be highly inaccurate and/or outdated.

Green Living Tips – Coffee Addiction

I will let you in on a little secret that I
have been harbouring for the last
month or so. I am addicted and
obsessed with used coffee grounds, or
at least my worm farm and garden are!
I discovered this wonderful organic
matter about 12 months ago when a
friend of mine gave me two large
garbage bags of coffee grounds that
he picked up from a local cafe.
Without thinking too much about it, I
added a bag each to two of my three
compost bins. About a week later I
checked back and to my amazement
there were worms in abundance
literally swimming though the grounds.
They loved the stuff and multiplied
quickly, which made me happy.
Anyway, after a while I promptly forgot
this valuable lesson until about five
weeks ago when I read an article
about the benefits of coffee grounds
when used in your garden, compost or
worm farm and how it has a high
nitrogen to carbon ratio (about 22:1)
which is comparable to grass
clippings. Coffee grounds also help
the soil to retain moisture if added
directly.
For those who compost, it is used as a
'green' and not a 'brown' even though
that is its colour. For those who
thought it would be high in acid (just
like a cup of coffee), think again,
because it has relatively balanced pH
of between 6.2 to 6.9 (with 7 being
neutral). Most of the acid is flushed
away during the coffee making
process. If you have acid loving plants
such as blueberries, you can add it
directly around the base and they
thrive.

Now I am a one cup a day man, which
produces 20 grams of grounds. This
doesn't sound like much but over the
course of a year that amounts to 7.3 kg
of waste. It only takes 50,000 cups of
java to make one metric tonne of the
stuff, which you can easily imagine
many, many times over in a large city
of 4 million like Melbourne or Sydney.
1 tonne of coffee waste emits 1.6
tonnes of Greenhouse gasses,
primarily being methane (CH4), so that
is one heck of a lot of GHG emissions
just from coffee waste. Taking it out of
the waste stream is doing the climate a
favour!
Where do you get a steady supply of
this 'brown gold'? Well if you happen
to live in Melbourne, which is home of
Australia's coffee culture, you certainly
do not have to look very far. There are
cafes and coffee shops everywhere,
just throwing away mountains of coffee
grounds every single day. All you have
to do is have the courage to ask for
them.
So that is what I did ask. I currently
have an arrangement with my favourite
coffee lady Kate, whereby I take in a
little bucket with a lid, and she diverts
the coffee grounds from landfill and
into my bucket. It fills in a couple of
days and I collect it in the mornings
and pop it into the boot of my car
before I catch the train.
A nice arrangement and Kate was
more than happy to accommodate me,
probably because I started the keep
cup craze here at the train station.
Anyone who is anyone now has a
"keep cup" (well at least 15 people that
catch my train now!). There are many
other cafes in town, so it would be
easy enough to approach them as
well, but we will see how much I get
from Kate each week first before I get
too greedy. The worms and compost
bins can only take so much.
Where else can you get some without
doing the hard yards? Well I did some
research and there is a web site that
can help you. groundtoground.org has
a great map with details of where you
can pick up some coffee grounds from
willing cafe proprietors. Have a look
as it has some great tips on how to use
the coffee grounds and other good
ideas.
Additionally, let's not forget our work
places. Many now have automatic
coffee machines that grind roasted
beans and serve up a half decent cup
of coffee. I know that at my work, just
about every floor in our high-rise has
one of these machines that needs to
be cleaned out daily. The grounds are
usually tipped into the landfill bin by
some unconcerning soul. However,
the machine on my floor gets cleared
by yours truly, whereby I cart the
grounds home in my lunch box. The
only limitation I have to taking home
more is the room and weight of my
backpack. I could probably carry
about 3kg comfortably and there is
certainly much more than that going
into the bin each day.

So in summary, don't be scared to ask
your local cafe for their coffee waste.
It may not have any value to them, but
it is worth its weight in gold if you ask
me. It is fantastic for your worm farm,
compost bin, and veggie patch, not to
mention a big reduction in greenhouse
gas emissions. Lock all that carbon
away in the soil is such a simple action
that you can take.

petition to the Premier of Victoria,
Minister for Health and members
of the Victorian Parliament.
“The extent of estimated
population growth and existing
demand in the Shire of Melton
means that the Shire of Melton

access to a future new hospital.
"Melton Shire also supports the
call for increased bed capacity at
existing facilities such as the
Bacchus Marsh & Melton

Program, Caroline Springs;
involving local young people
between the ages of 13-18 years
from the Caroline Springs area
commencing Monday 9th April -
Sunday 15th April, 2012.
ʻEveryone has a story and young
people are no exceptionʼ. The
program aims to give young
people the opportunity to learn
exciting skills and empower them
in the art-form of drama and short
films.
The program includes around 15
participants over 6 intensive days,
learning from professionals in the
Media and Film industry. The
participants are taught in the art of
story telling, story writing, camera
operation, sound, lighting, film
making, acting, music editing,
running and working as part of a
film crew, running their own
production, ideas, deadlines and
teamwork.
At the completion of the program
a local community Film and
Awards Night will feature each of
the short films produced by the
participants and attended by
family, friends, local schools,
Council, partners and Victoria
Police.
The program involves the local
community of Brookside College,
Lakeview
College,
Brimbank/Melton Legal Services
and people of Caroline Springs;
with a view to supporting and
developing positive relations
between the young people and
their own community.
