Caroline Springs Animal Welfare NetworkCampaign to Ban Live AnimalExportThe vision of an investigation at anIndonesian abattoir has outragedAustralians. The footage provided byLyn White from Animals Australiashowed gentle Brahman cows beingtortured to death. The image of a lonebull shaking in terror after watchinghis mates being butchered andskinned in front of him will besomething that stays with all whoviewed it for the rest of our lives. The reaction from Australians hasbeen unprecedented. It has seen thecollaboration of several high profileorganisations in the fight to end all liveanimal export from our shores.Hundreds of thousands of petitionsignatures have been collected, hundreds of thousands of emailshave been sent to the Prime MinisterJulia Gillard and Agriculture Minster,Joe Ludwig and thousands to FederalMPs and Senators. The suspension of the live cattle tradeto Indonesia is a welcomed first step, however, it is not the solution. Wemust band together and push for ourGovernment to end the live animaltrade altogether.Frequently RaisedQuestions and ConcernsBanning live animal export isanti-Islamic- FALSEThe Halal Certification AuthorityAustralia released a press releaseJune 2nd, 2011 condemning; “MajlisUlama Indonesia (MUI) in the name.Email: csawnetwork@gmail.com Phone: 0410 315 808Postal Address: PO Box 3682, Caroline Springs VIC 3023ABN:12 200 598 619of Islam for the heinous, disgustingand un-Islamic treatment meted toanimals in slaughter houses under itswatch. This Authority has come to theconclusion that Handlers andSlaughtermen in Indonesia have noidea about Islamic rules on animalwelfare and treatment.”We need to keep exportingto achieve welfareimprovements in importingcountries- FALSEAfter 30 years of exporting andmillions of dollars invested in trainingprograms and facilities in importingcountries, investigations consistentlyreveal unspeakable cruelty to animals(including slaughterhouses in receiptof Meat and Livestock Australiatraining). The recent investigation inIndonesia revealed that the cruelʻrestraint boxesʼ installed and utilisedwere partly funded by Australiantaxpayers. If we donʼt send our animals, they will source them fromsomewhere else- FALSEAustralia is the only exporting countrywithout foot and mouth disease, sothey would not be able to import liveanimals from elsewhere.Ending the live export tradewill ruin farmers- FALSEThree separate independenteconomic reports over the past twoyears have found that live exports areundermining Australiaʼs meatprocessing industry. Reviews into thelive sheep trade found that phasingout sheep exports would haveminimal impact on farmers and mayhave long term benefits for oureconomy through increasingprocessing in Australia. Similarly, a2010 report into the impact of the livecattle trade found that it underminedAustraliaʼs beef exports andthreatened 36,000 jobs. Contrary toindustry claims, live export does notunderpin 10,000 jobs in the ruralsector. The majority of those jobswould remain (and more created) ifanimals were processed in Australia.National Day of ActionJune 18 saw a National Day of Actionto Ban Live Export. What is Macular Degeneration?Macular Degeneration (MD) is the namegiven to a group of degenerativediseases of the retina that causeprogressive yet painless loss of centralvision. It affects the ability to see finedetail, drive, read, as well as recognisefaces. The disease can be hereditary and ismore prevalent with age.The exact cause of MDis still largely unknown.Although, what we doknow, is that there areseveral risk factors, fordeveloping MD. Theseinclude sun damageand diet. There is no cure for MD.However, there aretreatment options thatcan slow down its progression, dependant on the stage and type of thedisease. The earlier the disease is detected, themore vision you are likely to retain. Both wet and dry forms of MacularDegeneration begin in the RetinalPigment Epithelium (RPE), a layer ofcells underneath the retina. The RPE isresponsible for passing oxygen, sugarand other essentials to the retina andmoving waste products down to theblood vessels underneath.MD occurs when this "garbagecollection" breaks down and wasteproducts from the retina build upunderneath the RPE. These deposits, known as ʻdrusenʼ, are easily seen byyour optometrists as yellow spots. As MD progresses, vision loss occurs. This is due to either the RPE cells dyingor the RPE cells failingto prevent bloodvessels from thechoroid growing intothe retina. In the early stages ofMD, when drusen firstappear, you may notrealise anything iswrong and you may stillhave normal vision. Inorder for MD to be detected at this earlystage, regular Eye Examinations areessential!Your eye works very similar to acamera. The lens at the front of youreye focuses the image onto the retina, which lines the back of the eye. Yourretina acts like a film in a camera. Theimage is sent from the retina, throughthe optic nerve, and interpreted by thebrain. The Macula is the very centre of theretina. You are reading this text usingyour macula. It is responsible for yourcentral, detailed vision. The maculaallows you to read, distinguish faces;drive a car and conduct any otheractivities which require fine vision.Unfortunately, we cannot change ourgenes or our age but we may reducethe risk of MD or slow down theprogression of the disease, by makingpositive diet and lifestyle changes:Some tips include:• Having your eyes tested regularly andensuring your macula is checked.• Wearing sunglasses, especially whenyoung.• Not Smoking.• Leading a healthy lifestyle• Exercising Regularly• Eating a healthy well-balanced diet. This should include;1. Limiting your intake of fats2. Eating fish two to three times a week3. Eating dark green leafy vegetablesand fresh fruit daily4. Eating a handful of nuts each weekThe team of optometrists at CarolineSprings Optical provide ComprehensiveEye Examinations, during which themacula is screened. To make anappointment, please call 8390 5190.Appointments are bulk billed and areferral is not necessary.Page 27

Green Living Tips - Solar Power, Maximise Your InvestmentWritten by Gavin Webber, author www.greeningofgavin.comI am the proud owner of my ownpower station! I have had asolar power system installedsince September 2007 andbelieve that I was an earlyadopter of this grid connecttechnology. I have sixteenSharp 175 watt panels on mycarport roof, and a Fronius IG30inverter which feed in tothe National grid.During that time I havegenerated 14,612 kilowatthours (kWh), and avoidedemitting 17.9 tonnes ofCO₂-e. This equates to$3,067 in savings at thepresent electricity tariff of21 cents per kWh. Nicestats and it has gone quitea way to paying for itselfalready. As we live in Victoria, we arelucky to be paid the PremiumSolar Feed-in Tariff of 66c perkWh for every kilowatt hour weexport to the grid via a CogenerationSmart Meter. This is what is called a NetMetering scheme as you onlyget paid for the electricity thatyou export above and beyondthe amount you consume in yourhome from the solar PV systemfirst. The other type of schemeis a Gross Metering schemewhere you get paid for all theelectricity you generate.Unfortunately, this scheme isonly available in the A.C.T., sowe are stuck with Net Meteringin Victoria until a national FeedinTariff is announced. My pool pump only runs at night,as does the washing machine, iron, and dishwasher which areall the heavy energy demandingappliances and pumps we own.We buy 100% Green Power tohelp with carbon neutrality, whichonly costs me 25c per kWh, andwe try not to use the day timepower generated by my Solar PVsystem which is worth 66c to me.For instance, if it was a sunnyday and I generated 10 kWh,and I used 10 kWh duringdaylight hours I would mostly bedrawing that electricity straightfrom the solar PV systembecause my home would use itfirst. There is none spare to export. Therefore, I would be rippingmyself off by 41c per kWhutilised in the home. If I did thisevery day it adds up to a loss of$4.10 a day or over a 90 daybilling period it adds up to awhopping big $369.This is massive loss as you cansee. If I had have exported all ofthat electricity into the grid overthe billing period, I would havebeen paid a massive $594, andwould be probably be in credit onmy bill. The way I see it, byusing most of our electricityduring the night from the gridwhen I am not generatingelectricity and feeding asmuch as I can into the gridduring the day, I am stillcarbon neutral (due toGreenPower) and am simplyusing the Solar PV system tomy financial advantage! There is certainly no crimeagainst that. Being greendoes pay in the long run.Just because you may havebought your solar powersystem to reduce yourenvironmental footprint, itdoesnʼt mean you canʼt get themost out of your investment. Ihighly recommend that you tryand restrict your consumptionduring the day, and think aboututilising the heavy poweredappliances at night to maximiseyour Solar PV investment. While you are at it, have a thinkabout how you use yourelectricity. If you practice energyefficiency measures around thehome, you will save even moreon your electricity bill. Turningthat light off in that emptybedroom doesnʼt sound toodifficult once you get into thehabit, and you will save a fewbucks as well.Page 29
