South Asia Bethany House Fellowship in Kolkata, India received a three-year $9,250 grant in 2005, matching the church to reach out to the Dakshin Barasat community. Our grant was used to expand a primary school, establish an adult literacy ministry, and support a team of evangelists to work intensively in the community. The hope is that by ministering holistically to both children and their families, a viable new church can be established where none previously existed. Outreach can be very difficult in communities without any Christian presence. In many parts of the world, ministering to the physical needs within a community provides a critical platform for also ministering spiritually. This is particularly true in places throughout South Asia where predominately Hindu, Muslim, or Buddhist communities are often hostile to the direct proclamation of the gospel of Christ. The Mustard Seed Foundation supports efforts that creatively present the gospel in these places through ministries such as preschools, health clinics, and other forms of social outreach. The Trust is an umbrella NGO representing roughly a dozen local churches based in the Indian capital. The Trust gathered vulnerable migrant women from different states in northern India into cooperatives, provided small business and vocational training and gave small loans to each woman. Each beneficiary returns the loan amount with two percent interest within 11 months, so the funds can be used for another small business. This initiative is one of several undertaken by these local churches hoping to provide a tangible witness of the love of Christ to nearly 3,000 women in the first few years of the project. The Mustard Seed Foundation desires to share God’s love by providing economic opportunity to disadvantaged individuals as a deliberate outreach strategy of churches. While most micro-finance initiatives that we support aim to empower poor Christians, some are designed as an outreach strategy among non-Christians. These initiatives often involve the establishment of small cooperatives or savings groups through which strong relational bonds form and the love of Christ can be more authentically demonstrated and proclaimed. 25
