Grants overview Europe: 153 grants totaling $1,243,600 North America: 161 grants totaling $1,218,821 East Asia: 55 grants totaling $421,104 Middle East: 52 grants totaling $267,519 South Asia: 233 grants totaling $605,075 South America: 29 grants totaling $207,510 Southeast Asia: 69 grants totaling $276,780 Africa: 191 grants totaling $706,267 Providing seed funding to start-up ministry efforts of churches in major urban centers of the world continues to be the largest giving area of the Foundation. In 2007 a total of $4,946,676 was awarded through 943 grants. Over 88 percent of these grants were directed to local churches, and nearly 82 percent were to help launch initiatives in major cities. Five specific cities received 28 percent of our total grants awarded in 2007: Mumbai, Nairobi, Delhi, Manila and New York. Regional granting trends remained consistent with 2006. The number of grants awarded in South Asia represented roughly a quarter of the total number awarded by the Foundation. Granting in Africa and North America also remained quite strong. However, our greatest increase in regional granting was in Europe, where giving increased 43 percent over 2006. In the remaining four geographic regions of East Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia there were slight increases in the number of grants awarded. The amount of funding awarded varied considerably from region to region in large part due to the relative purchasing power of the dollar around the world. Historically, grant funding in North America has been the greatest, though it has been steadily decreasing as a share of our overall granting. Increasing by nearly 37 percent, giving in Europe surpassed that of any other region in 2007. Funds awarded in Africa and South Asia also increased considerably. Despite the significant devaluation of the dollar against many currencies worldwide in 2007, our global grant average only increased by 5 percent to $5,241. The vast majority of our granting in 2007 was directed to support initiatives in one of three main areas of ministry. More than three quarters of grants awarded went to support efforts to proclaim and demonstrate the gospel of Christ. Projects included social outreach ministries such as preschools and health clinics, cross-cultural missions involving non- Western missionaries, and initiatives specifically aimed at youth. Church planting was again the single largest type of ministry supported, representing nearly 30 percent of all granting. Roughly a quarter of our granting was split between grants to support Christian economic empowerment and discipleship initiatives. The establishment of revolving loan funds to provide poor Christian entrepreneurs with capital to start or expand small businesses comprised 81 percent of Empowerment granting. Discipleship initiatives were significantly more diverse, with those focused on leadership development representing roughly a third of granting in this grant category. Less than two percent of our granting in 2007 was outside of Outreach, Discipleship, and Empowerment granting categories. We do not anticipate any major changes in our granting in the coming year. We are committed to watch what God is doing through his Church and how we might come alongside to encourage that work. 6
Africa Jesus Healing and Restoration Ministry was awarded a three-year grant totaling $7,500 matching church support to establish a revolving loan fund for poorer members of their church in Nairobi, Kenya. In the first year of the project, the church gave loans to 35 church members living in the Koroghocho slums to start small businesses. Loans were provided at a five percent rate of interest over a maximum six-month period, with an initial one-month interest-free grace period. Once repaid, the loans will further revolve to new members, or become additional loans to first-round borrowers in good standing. Roughly 85 percent of the total budget of the project is allocated for loans that should benefit over 100 people during the first three years of the project. The Foundation funded nearly 80 revolving-loan funds to empower poorer Christians in 2007. We believe that giving decision-making power and ownership to the poor brings both hope and dignity. We value this type of empowerment which builds the resources of the Kingdom one Christian at a time and provides a tangible witness to the world of the love for each other within the Church.
