Message from the Board Chair
and the President & CEO
Dear Board Members, Friends, Supporters, Volunteers,
Community Leaders, Partners and Neighbors,
We are privileged to present you with the 2011 Annual Report for Ruth Rales
Jewish Family Service (JFS). The 2011 fiscal year (September 1, 2010–August
31, 2011) was another year of tremendous growth and changes for JFS.
One of the most significant achievements was the opening of the Shirley &
Barton Weisman Delray Community Center in November 2010. Since its
opening, the Center has become a vibrant hub of activity with over 200
people walking through the doors each day. We invite you to stop by
anytime and visit to see what’s happening there!
Our counseling and mental health department saw the addition of psychiatry
and psychology services providing an affordable option to the community.
The addition of a staff psychologist allowed JFS to renew our partnership
with Nova University’s Psychology Department to provide a practicum site
for doctoral level students.
The Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry took advantage of partnerships with
BJ’s Wholesale Club and was awarded a significant grant from the Walmart
Foundation which enabled us to stretch our dollars further. We also stepped
up our community food drives and expect to continue to see growth in this area.
Through the generous support of the Viner Family Foundation and Hands on
Tzedakah, we added a case manager for families and children in crisis which
has proven to be a wonderful addition. We started the Caring Doctors
Program in partnership with the Palm Beach County Medical Society to
provide short-term, affordable health care to uninsured adults aged 19-64
from area doctors who see patients in their offices and receive sovereign
immunity from the partnership.
Our Holocaust program grew over 100% with JFS now serving over 240
Holocaust survivors. Thank you to the Claims Conference, and a supplemental
campaign which raised nearly $100K so that we could absorb this increase
without starting a waiting list.
As a result of a demonstration grant from the Retirement Research Foundation,
we also saw significant growth in our Kibbitz & Ride volunteer driver program
which is now serving over 100 seniors providing affordable transportation.
All these successes continue to enhance our ability to provide quality programs
and services to the community. None of this could be accomplished without
our dedicated staff, caring volunteers, dedicated board and many supporters.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you whose generosity helps us
to provide hope to those in need living in Boca Raton, Delray Beach and
Highland Beach.
We hope you will join us in taking pride in our accomplishments in 2011
and look forward to only good things in the coming year.

Our geriatric care specialists help seniors age in place for as long as
possible with dignity and independence. We have many services
available including assessment and care coordination, patient
advocacy, information and referral, companionship and many
socialization opportunities. JFS provides a vital link between seniors
living in our community and their loved ones living out of state.

Client Profile
Eva Shaffron is an 87 year old Holocaust survivor born in the
small town of Timisora, in the country of Romania. After
liberation, Eva fled to Israel where she married and gave birth
to two daughters. After contacting JFS, Eva now receives help in
a multitude of ways. In addition to the Forster Family Kosher Food
Pantry, Eva also receives case management services, monthly
housekeeping, and a few hours of personal care services each
week. Eva also receives calls from our volunteer telephone
reassurance program and has a friendly visitor come
check in on her between visits from her social worker,
Debbie Lipson. JFS was also able to help Eva
apply for food stamps and
Medicaid. Eva says that
without the assistance she
receives from JFS she
would not be able to
live independently in a
safe environment.

246 Holocaust survivors received services in 2011 –
a 130% increase. Thank you State of Florida and the
Claims Conference for grants in support of this program.
The Feldman Family Diamond Club provided much
needed socialization for those aged 75 plus with over
500 members.

Community Center since its opening in
November of 2010. With the guidance
of B’nai Brith youth groups Alex was
taught the values of volunteerism. Alex

Client Profile
Brian came to JFS seeking help for the treatment of depression,
unable to hold a steady job. After seeing one of our licensed
social workers for four months, Brian improved his self confidence
and coping skills which helped reduce his
chronic depression. He was also able
to find steady employment and
began making friends. With each
challenge Brian overcomes, he
gains more confidence in
himself and has a higher level
of self-esteem and continues to
make progress with the help of
a JFS clinician.

5,546 people called JFS for information and referral services
providing a vital link to both JFS and community services.
In 2011 JFS clinicians saw 546 individuals and families
in crisis providing over 4000 hours of affordable counseling,
psychology and psychiatry services – a 6% increase over 2010.
Community Mentoring Programs provided support to 30
children living in the community – a 16% increase from
2010. Thank you to the Children’s Services Council for their
ongoing support of this program.

Children in Crisis
Financial Assistance
JFS provides a lifeline to individuals and families in crisis, providing
emergency funds for basic necessities and other urgent needs. Since
1996 the Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry has delivered bi-weekly
food packages to qualified seniors, individuals and families providing
much needed sustenance to those in need. The Caring Doctors Program
provides uninsured adults between the ages of 19-64 with pro-bono
health care services provided by doctors in the community. We also
provide interest-free loans through the Hebrew Free Loan Association
and educational school loans through the Jewish Educational Loan Fund.

JFS assisted 1175 people with direct financial assistance
distributing $103,082 in emergency relief – an 11.5%
increase in requests.

Community Mentoring
Programs
Volunteers remain critical to our success and we would not be able
to provide help to as many people in our community without their
gift of time and talent. Each year over 300 individuals and families,
including many teens, donate the equivalent of more than 25,000
hours of service to JFS. Our volunteers mentor children and teens,
lead religious services at assisted living facilities and nursing homes,
provide rides for seniors in need of transportation, provide care to
uninsured adults, and reduce the isolation of homebound seniors
through daily telephone calls and friendly visits.

At the age of 99, Dr. Robert (Bob) Weitz is one of our Forster
Family Kosher Food Pantry’s regular volunteers. You can find
him each month with his lady friend Pearl, volunteering at our
monthly food baggings to benefit the
recipients of the food pantry. Being
involved is not new for Bob, as his
entire life has been devoted to helping
others and to being an activist for
important causes. The reason Bob
likes volunteering for JFS is because
he believes “no man is an
island” and we need our
community to provide
assistance and help
when it’s needed.
