Letter from the President & CEO
Dear Friends,
Since our last printing we continue to have many successful
programs and announcements that we hope to bring to your
attention in our Spring edition of Illumination Magazine. I am
pleased to advise you that we moved into our new food pantry
location in October and continue to get settled. During our
Grand Opening Celebration we announced a $1M gift from
Anne and Norman Jacobson to name the “Jacobson Family
Food Pantry at JFS.” Many thanks to the Jacobsons for their
continued support of our local agencies. (You can find the full
story on page 06.)
In February we will “graduate” our first class of Senior
Companion Program Trainees. This program, which was
funded through a grant by the Palm Beach County Workforce
Alliance, matched 30 unemployed adults with 60 agency
clients who would have otherwise not been able to pay for
private services. In addition to 10 hours of classroom
instruction, our Senior Companion Program Trainees received
on the job training under supervision from JFS staff. They are
now fully trained and ready for employment! (See page 16 for
more information).
Testimonials:
“My children and I were expecting a very bleak holiday
season. I had told them not to expect anything for Hanukkah
because I did not have any extra money. I fell to the floor
sobbing when I picked up the two bags of toys marked for
my children for Hanukkah. In my wildest dreams I never
thought I would have the ability to celebrate Hanukkah this
year. You made me as a mother feel as if I could provide for
my children again. My children were over the moon opening
their gifts. They were jumping up and down and screaming
with each gift they opened! We are all so appreciative!
THANK YOU!” – Anonymous
“I am eternally grateful for what JFS has done for my
children. We were able to light the Menorah and sing songs
and open beautiful gifts that you so generously gave to my
three children. Your generosity made a broken family whole
again!!!” – Anonymous
FOOD & FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
$1M Gift Names the “Jacobson
Family Food Pantry at JFS”
Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service (JFS) is
pleased to announce a new $1 million
gift for the “Jacobson Family Food
Pantry at JFS.” Anne and Norman
Jacobson’s gift coincides with the
opening of JFS’ new food pantry in a
2,600 sq. ft. warehouse space located at
430 S. Congress Avenue in Delray Beach.
The naming and opening were
celebrated at the pantry at a Grand
Opening on the evening of November
29, 2012.
JFS food pantry services began in 1996
with 35 clients. Today, the Jacobson
Family Food Pantry at JFS provides more
than 550 people with bi-monthly food
packages. All recipients are first screened
to determine their eligibility. Significant
increase in need caused JFS to outgrow
its location on the Jewish Federation of
South Palm Beach County campus west
of Boca Raton.
“Over the past decade, the number of
our neighbors who need help with their
day to day sustenance has increased
tremendously, and the number of
requests to the Food Pantry at JFS just
keeps increasing,” said Norman
Jacobson. “To ensure that those who
must depend on a pantry can continue
to obtain their essential nourishment
and maintain their dignity, Annie and I
decided to make this gift. We must
acknowledge those whose vision,
dedication and generosity helped create
the Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry
that served our community’s needs from
1996 until earlier this year: Marcy and
Bill Forster, Phyliss and Gerry Golden,
Madeline and Eugene Pargh, Elise (z’l)
and Moe Samet (z’l).”
“The Federation applauds JFS’s
expansion of its food pantry and its
ability to service more needy residents in
our community,” said Matt Levin,
President & CEO of the Jewish
Federation of South Palm Beach County.
“We are also deeply moved by another
powerful example of generosity and
ILLUMINATION Spring 2013
compassion for our community and our
people from Anne and Norman
Jacobson.”
In addition to a much expanded storage
area, the new Food Pantry at JFS will
feature a “shopping” area for clients
with transportation to make selections
onsite rather than receive food deliveries.
The new location also includes a walk-in
produce cooler for donated produce
and will allow JFS to begin storing fresh
milk.
“The funds for expansion were provided
by the Oscar and Ray Merber Trust (z’l).
We were blessed to have their niece,
Marilyn Ripen, at the Grand Opening to
honor their memory and their wonderful
gift to the agency and the community,”
said Danielle N. Hartman, President &
CEO of JFS. “Our new location will
enable the agency to feed more people
in need. In addition, we will be able to
save money through bulk purchasing
and deliver more customized food
packages to the people we help. We
remain committed to serving all the
Jewish food needs in our community.”
“We are thrilled to be able to take this
next step in having our own location,
which will be a showcase for JFS food
programs in our community,” said Lisa
Goodman, Chair of the Food Pantry at
JFS. “Without the vision and generosity
of the Goldens, Parghs, Samets and the
Forster family, the food pantry would
never have come to be, and through our
expansion and the Jacobsons’ gift will
be able to do far more.”
A non-profit, non-sectarian agency, Ruth
Rales Jewish Family Service of South
Palm Beach County has been committed
to enhancing and improving the quality
of life for all members of the community
since 1979. JFS offers help, hope and
humanity through a comprehensive
range of programs and services which
support people of all ages and beliefs.
Sheila’s Story
Sheila and her husband Robert lived a
comfortable life, with travel and all the
good things that life has to offer. All
that changed for Sheila when Robert
died suddenly of a massive heart
attack. Her husband had lost their
entire savings in the stock market over
the past four years, leaving her with
only $2,500 in the bank. Facing
foreclosure and bankruptcy was too
much for her to bear.
After her JFS bereavement group
session one day, the facilitator saw her
sitting alone, crying.
Sheila told him about her situation.
That afternoon she was seen in the
Financial Assistance Department at
JFS. Sheila’s Financial Assistance Case
Manager connected her to Workforce
Alliance for a job, helped with FPL and
water bills, assisted in applying for
food stamps, and placed her on the
food pantry list. Six weeks later, Sheila
found a job, an affordable apartment,
and was able to hope again. In her
own words, “I am eternally grateful to
JFS for saving my life!”
Johnathan’s Story
Jonathan is a 57 year old widower who lost his
wife to cancer. As the main caregiver, he suffered
from depression that only increased after he lost
his job a few months before she passed away. As
if that wasn’t enough, he also lost both his parents
within the last year. He started therapy, depressed
and overwhelmed, taking medication for these
issues, but was simply unable to cope with his
life’s stress and his grief.
After beginning to work with his therapist at JFS,
he has been able to move forward in his life. He
attends a weekly bereavement group, receives
food from the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at
JFS, and recently started a new job.
Letters to Volunteer
I stopped driving 6 months ago due to macular degeneration. I am 87 years
old and was always able to take myself where I needed to go. I am now a
recipient of the Kibbitz & Ride program and I feel as if I am a lady of leisure
now! I am picked up by the nicest lady that brings me shopping and to the
doctor. What a breath of sunshine my driver is. We talk and laugh and listen
to music in her very comfortable car. I have found a new friend and I do not
feel so isolated. I am so indebted to JFS for helping me in my time of need.
THANK YOU!!-Anonymous
I am living at an Assisted Living Facility in Boca now since my wife passed
away 1 year ago. I felt disconnected to the outside world and could not
attend synagogue as I would have liked to. Once I started to attend the
Friday Shabbat services I realized I started to feel better and I looked forward
to the Parachaplain that comes to lead the service. The Parachaplain stays
and talks to a few of us and it is so enlightening and refreshing. Makes me
feel like I used to and I don’t dwell on being alone on Fridays. Bless you at
JFS for connecting me again to my Judaism and thank you for the volunteer
CLIENT PROFILE
Gertrude’s Story
Gertrude is a 97 year old Holocaust survivor, frail but
determined to live out her years in independence. Having
been in a ghetto in Poland from 1940-1943 and a concentration
camp from 1943 until liberation, her suffering has been
profound. Now in the remaining years of her life, she suffers
from severe rheumatoid arthritis which causes her chronic
pain on a daily basis. The Holocaust Assistance Program at
JFS provides Gertrude with a home health aide three days a
week to assist with bathing, shopping, meal preparations,
laundry, housekeeping and transportation to medical
appointments.
Gertrude constantly thanks JFS for the help, but it is JFS that
is grateful that we can ease her life after all she has endured.
dancing, a great lunch and jelly donuts. A big thank you goes to
Diane and Gary Glick whose donation of decorations and gift bags
Medical Care with Nurse Practitioner
Now Available at Weisman Delray
Community Center
Furthering wellness through greater accessibility to health care, the comprehensive offerings of Ruth Rales Jewish
Family Service (JFS) have now expanded to include medical care through a Board-Certified Family Nurse
Practitioner. Through a pilot grant from Hands on Tzedakah (HOT), Marcia Gilkes, ARNP, GNP-BC, has begun to
provide care at the Delray Center as well as at the Volen Center in east Boca Raton. Gilkes is an employee of
Genesis Health, also a partner in the project.
“With transportation a significant barrier, many people just do not get the proper medical attention they need to
prevent illness and live healthy, fulfilling lives,” said Risa Demato, Delray Center Site Director. “Therefore, JFS is
committed to bringing accessible health care to them at a place they already frequent for many other types of
help, including social services and mental health care, as well as educational and social programming.”
“JFS and the Volen Center approached HOT to provide a six-month pilot grant so that could begin helping
people while collecting the data to document the need for these types of services in South Palm Beach County,”
added Danielle Hartman, JFS President & CEO. “Once again, HOT had the insight and generosity to enable us
to meet a critical need in the community.
“We recognize the critical benefits of providing access to behavioral health and medical services in the same
venue,” said Ron Gallatin, HOT Chairman and CEO. “We are pleased to provide the seed money so that the
proper data can be gathered to show potential grant makers an effective way to meet the community’s needs.”
“JFS and the Volen Center are now working on applications with other granting agencies toward sustaining and
further developing this important service model,” added Hartman. “This is also an important new opportunity for
JFS to partner with Florida Atlantic University’s College of Nursing as an internship placement site.”
Gilkes will provide wellness checks of vision, hearing, BMI, height, weight and blood pressure; home assessments
for safety; one-on-one consultations, patient advocacy with doctors; staff consultation; workshops and discussion
forums; medication management related to education; and medical reviews.
There are two 4-week educational groups, free of charge at the Delray Center. Held on Tuesdays from 11:00 am
– 12:00 pm and on Thursdays from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm, the groups are limited to only ten Delray Center
members, and JFS clients or volunteers. Marcia will be
providing similar programming at the Volen Center
which converted one of their rooms to provide a clinictype
setting for even more advanced care.
“I am excited to be partnering with JFS and the Volen
Center,” said Gilkes, ARNP, GNP-BC. “I look forward to
making a difference in the health and well-being of
many people at both locations.”
The Weisman Delray Community Center is located at
7091 West Atlantic, Delray Beach. Appointments may
be made with the ARNP for one-on-one consultations or
to be part of his “Your Health Care” educational groups,
by calling 561-558-2100 or at the Delray Center.
DEVELOPMENT
Message from
Cindy Orbach Nimhauser,
Director of Development
While Season in Florida means different things to
different people, it is a time for all of us to gather and
make a difference for those less fortunate. Our Annual
Gala is one of those special times. This year our theme
was “A Night of Hollywood”, honoring our indefatigable
Arnie and Isabel Friedman with the 2012 Ruth and
Norman Rales Humanitarian Award.
Our Corporate Leadership Award Recipient was
Greenspoon Marder, with gratitude for their continuing
support of the agency. Our dedicated and tireless Chairs
of the evening were Lisa Goodman, Roxane Lipton and
Vicki J. Weinstein. Their attention to detail and efforts
were apparent, as the evening was a night of fun and
fundraising. A night to be remembered and to be proud
of!
We had the privilege of opening the Jacobson Family
Food Pantry on November 29th. An excited crowd filled
the food pantry as we celebrated this incredibly
generous and thoughtful gift from Anne and Norman
Jacobson. The Jacobson’s Legacy gift will continue to
help those in need for years to come. This is just one
example of the power of legacy giving. Contact me to
find out how I can help you achieve your philanthropic
goals for the future.
Parlor meetings continue to be a vehicle for us to inform
our neighbors and friends about the work of JFS. We
just held one at Talia and Hal Klein’s home, and it was an
educational and moving evening. If you would like to
host a parlor meeting, please contact me. The intimate
setting and information relayed will plant the seeds for
future volunteers and supporters.
By the time you read this, we will have had our Inaugural
Reflections of Hope Luncheon. This new event, whose
proceeds will benefit the Welcome Home Program and
our Counseling services, is slated to be a huge success
and I will be sure to have an update in our Fall
Illumination. Sponsorship opportunities are available for
next year’s luncheon.
Be on the lookout for your invitation to our Annual Golf
Tournament which takes place at Delaire Country Club
on April 8, 2013. Sponsorships are also available for this
event.
We could not do the work we do for the community
without the generosity of all of you. Thank you for your
continuing support. As always, I am just a phone call or
email away to help you fulfill your philanthropic wishes.
A gift of today to honor a special occasion , a gift in
memory of a loved one, and/or a gift for the future- all
continue the gift of help, hope and humanity that does
so much good for so many.
