Celebrating our 20th Anniversary Message from the President and Board Chairs 2010 has been a year of celebration for WCBR—a time of reaffirming, renewing and celebrating our mission and ministry of service to seniors for the past 20 years. Many activities and events took place in October, our anniversary month, including a special gala for Health Care and Catered Living residents, a resident and staff celebration show, the depiction of our history through the gallery hallway display, an anniversary calendar, and a treasure chest event which created a memory box filled with items representing the past 20 years—to be re-opened during our 30 th anniversary. The highlight of our celebration was the anniversary service and gala which featured several guest speakers, including some founding members of our community who recounted our accomplishments and honored our residents and staff who first came to the WCBR community to live and work. After the pre-dinner cocktail party the evening continued with an outstanding dinner presented by our dining services. The celebration concluded with dancing and socializing as we happily reflected on our great accomplishments of the past 20 years. Every year brings a host of accomplishments through the work and support of the WCBR team—our residents, trustees, staff and donors. Other highlights of 2010 are worth noting. • The Foundation exceeded annual giving objectives through generous donor support. • Foundation investments began to rebound. • Corporate operational performance was positive and exceeded budget expectation. • The Employee Emergency Program was established. • Social Accountability was addressed with the formation of an active committee consisting of staff, trustees, and residents. • Plans were finalized for the renovation of Health Care Center, third floor. • The Board of Trustees approved activities necessary to explore the possible renovation and expansion of our original Monticello apartments. It is with tremendous gratitude and pleasure that we acknowledge all those who shaped WCBR and brought us to the place we are today—embracing the future to further the mission our organization. Celebrating our Foundation What a fabulous year—2010—filled with glorious 20 th anniversary celebrations! Worthy of significant celebration is the philanthropy that has supported the WCBR Fellowship Fund, which stood at $1.5 million when we opened in 1990 and has grown to over $8 million. The giving tradition of our founders has continued to support the Fellowship Program, even through the recent economic challenges. The Fellowship Program provides confidential financial assistance for WCBR residents who, through no fault of their own, have limited financial resources. Fortunately, 2010 has brought some recovery to the investment market and the extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover through 2011 have both contributed to increased Fellowship Fund investments as donors feel more secure about giving. As we embrace the future we envision programs and activities which will further our mission. Two new initiatives that relate directly to the Foundation began in 2010. The Employee Emergency Program, established in September 2010, provides limited financial assistance to eligible employees who are experiencing financial hardship due to certain emergency situations beyond their control. Also established in 2010 was the Social Accountability Committee which will consider our organization’s role in the larger community. You will be able to read more about this topic in the article by Peter Buchanan on pages 19 and 20. For the Foundation, this may mean a limited expansion of Fellowship Assistance to help those in the broader community with partial funding for entrance into WCBR. In order to help individuals in this manner creative funding solutions will need to be explored and the long-term Fellowship Fund will need to be increased. Throughout 2010 the generosity of our donors once again allowed the Foundation to fully fund the Fellowship need as well as the need of other Foundation programs such as Employee Education. We are deeply grateful and honored to receive consistent year after year generosity from so many of our donors, as well as the so important first time gifts from the newest members of our community.
