2010 Annual Report
Anniversary Edition
Westminster-Canterbury
of the Blue Ridge Foundation

Celebrating our 20th Anniversary
Message from the President and Board Chairs
2010 has been a year of celebration for WCBR—a time of reaffirming, renewing and celebrating
our mission and ministry of service to seniors for the past 20 years. Many activities and events
took place in October, our anniversary month, including a special gala for Health Care and
Catered Living residents, a resident and staff celebration show, the depiction of our history through the
gallery hallway display, an anniversary calendar, and a treasure chest event which created a memory
box filled with items representing the past 20 years—to be re-opened during our 30 th anniversary.
The highlight of our celebration was the anniversary service
and gala which featured several guest speakers, including
some founding members of our community who recounted
our accomplishments and honored our residents and staff
who first came to the WCBR community to live and work.
After the pre-dinner cocktail party the evening continued
with an outstanding dinner presented by our dining services.
The celebration concluded with dancing and socializing as
we happily reflected on our great accomplishments of the
past 20 years.
Every year brings a host of accomplishments through the work and support of the WCBR team—our
residents, trustees, staff and donors. Other highlights of 2010 are worth noting.
• The Foundation exceeded annual giving objectives through generous donor support.
• Foundation investments began to rebound.
• Corporate operational performance was positive and exceeded budget expectation.
• The Employee Emergency Program was established.
• Social Accountability was addressed with the formation of an active committee consisting of
staff, trustees, and residents.
• Plans were finalized for the renovation of Health Care Center, third floor.
• The Board of Trustees approved activities necessary to explore the possible renovation and
expansion of our original Monticello apartments.
It is with tremendous gratitude and pleasure that we acknowledge all those who shaped WCBR and
brought us to the place we are today—embracing the future to further the mission our organization.
It is our pleasure to present this 20 th Anniversary Celebration Annual Report.
Celebrating our Foundation
What a fabulous year—2010—filled
with glorious 20 th anniversary
celebrations! Worthy of significant
celebration is the philanthropy that has supported
the WCBR Fellowship Fund, which
stood at $1.5 million when we opened in
1990 and has grown to over $8 million. The
giving tradition of our founders has continued
to support the Fellowship Program,
even through the recent economic challenges.
The Fellowship Program provides confidential
financial assistance for WCBR residents
who, through no fault of their own, have
limited financial resources.
Fortunately, 2010 has brought some recovery
to the investment market and the extension
of the IRA Charitable Rollover through
2011 have both contributed to increased
Fellowship Fund investments as donors feel
more secure about giving.
As we embrace the future we envision
programs and activities which will further
our mission. Two new initiatives that relate
directly to the Foundation began in 2010. The
Employee Emergency Program, established
in September 2010, provides limited
financial assistance to eligible employees
who are experiencing financial hardship
due to certain emergency situations beyond
their control.
Also established in 2010 was the Social
Accountability Committee which will
consider our organization’s role in the
larger community. You will be able to read
more about this topic in the article by
Peter Buchanan on pages 19 and 20. For
the Foundation, this may mean a limited
expansion of Fellowship Assistance to help
those in the broader community with partial
funding for entrance into WCBR. In order
to help individuals in this manner creative
funding solutions will need to be explored
and the long-term Fellowship Fund will
need to be increased.
Throughout 2010 the generosity of our
donors once again allowed the Foundation
to fully fund the Fellowship need as well
as the need of other Foundation programs
such as Employee Education. We are deeply
grateful and honored to receive consistent
year after year generosity from so many of
our donors, as well as the so important first
time gifts from the newest members of our
community.
Thank you to each and every friend
for your generous and loyal support of
WCBR Foundation Programs.
In Celebration of Volunteers
It is because of the social accountability of staff and resident
volunteers that many organizations, including WCBR, benefit from
In Celebration of Social Accountability
Since the phrase “Social Accountability” often means different things to different people, here is a
reasonably comprehensive definition, drawn from Google and Wikipedia. Social accountability
is an organization’s mindfulness of social concerns and priorities, reflected often by a third party
verification of the commitment by its internal and external stakeholders to:
(1) Comply with employment, health, hygiene, safety and environmental laws
(2) Respect basic civil and human rights, and
(3) Better the community and its surroundings.
The mission, vision and value statements, found elsewhere in this report, make clear WCBR’s
compliance with the standards in (1) above, and respect for basic rights of the elderly in (2) above.
They are built into WCBR’s DNA. Criteria for those commitments are measured constantly by local,
state and federal authorities and, most important, by the WCBR Board of Trustees.
Yet, despite a culture of giving by staff, the
philanthropic generosity of its residents, and
numerous partnerships of trustees and management
with organizations in the Charlottesville/Albemarle
area, WCBR has never developed specific measures
of its internal and external stakeholders’ betterment
of its own and the surrounding community.
It is not only what
we do, but also
what we do not
do, for which we
To address that deficiency, WCBR’s Board of
Trustees recently added a sixth goal to its corporate
strategic plan, namely “demonstrate community are accountable.
benefit to the local Albemarle /Charlottesville
area” by developing and implementing a formal
social accountability plan and a supporting
-Moliere
communications/public relations strategy. As a first
‘
step in developing a measure of WCBR’s betterment
of the immediate surrounding community, the Resident Strategic Planning Committee (RSPC) agreed
in 2010 to conduct the first ever survey of resident volunteer service in calendar 2009.
WCBR residents gave 12,524 hours of service valued at $252,708 and 1,266 gifts to 241
different non-profit organizations in the Albemarle/Charlottesville area during 2009.
These commitments exclude the thousands of hours and hundreds of gifts residents contribute to
WCBR and its Foundation programs, as well as the unknown hours and contributions given to
charitable organizations beyond the Albemarle/Charlottesville area. The distribution of those hours
and gifts is shown in the accompanying graphs on the next page.

After reviewing the results, President/CEO
Gary Selmeczi convened a Social Accountability
Task Force of trustees, residents and staff last
October to review these results and decide
what additional information gathering would
be necessary to develop a formal plan. Under
consideration are similar surveys of staff and
trustee hours and gifts, identification of other
existing but unmeasured relationships, and
new ones that might help further strengthen
WCBR and the surrounding community. A
formal plan is expected to be drafted in 2011.
