We all know our neighbors well, whether we want to or not! We put up with crying babies, late-night honking cars, barking dogs, yelling parents, and even pre-dawn lobster boat engines. These sounds are part of the fabric of life in our town. Jill and Dave, both lifetime Hullonians, are deeply woven into that fabric. While raising three young daughters in town, Jill and Dave have developed an outstanding business that serves, over the course of any given week, about 30 dogs and their families. By bringing the dogs to a 40-minute playgroup, and giving them fresh air, a time to socialize, and careful supervision, Jill and Dave help our pets (and our families) remain healthy and happy. And, they do this with amazing discretion, training their dogs not to bark and fastidiously cleaning the yard throughout playtime. Jill and Dave are hoping to be able to continue to operate their two playgroups in a 1,000-square-foot lot on the side of John Ring’s boatyard. Each group serves 8-12 dogs a day between 1-3:30 p.m., Tuesday- Friday. The closest neighbor’s house is 70 feet away, on the far side of their lot, and is separated from John’s boat-repair business by a 12-foot arborvitae hedge and an additional five-foot setback. John has even agreed to install a stockade fence along the property line, in order to help Jill and Dave keep their business afloat. Kudos to Ceil and John, two local businesspeople who are working to help keep another family-run enterprise alive. And, kudos to Jill and Dave Orpen for offering such a wonderful, respectful, and responsive service in town. Sincerely, Lory Newmyer Thanks a lot! To the Editor: In spite of the cool and windy conditions on this past Veterans’ Day ceremony, once again the town of Hull came out in full support to honor our heroes of the past and present. A very special and warm “Thank you” to all who participated in a most caring and unified manner. Ironically, the sun appeared just as we were about to begin. You made this day very special and eventful, a day of remembrance we will not forget. Those of you, too numerous to mention, truly deserve to be called true citizens and friends of Hull. We would be remiss however, if we did not mention Pastor Will Green, Representative Garrett Bradley, Lt. Commander Stephen Gill, Selectman John Reilly, St. Ann/St. Nicholas joint choirs, the Hull Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and soloist Amanda Daly. Mostly, special recognition to the chairman of the war memorial commission, John Coggins, who continues year after year to go above and beyond and gave his time and efforts to make this 11-11-11-11 a success. Among Bartlett’s more challenging cases was saving the lives of reindeer infected with a tick-born infectious disease. In spite of rigorous preventative measures, the disease sometimes occurs, and “Once they get sick, you have 24 hours to save their lives,” Bartlett says. Another challenge, which occurred during her residency, was an elephant that required surgical intervention to successfully birth her calf. Babies are, of course, a regular occurrence at zoos, and the Franklin Park Zoo “had a good year,” according to Bartlett. In the past six months, the Boston zoo has welcomed lemur twins, a Grant’s zebra foal, wildebeest and bongo babies, a prehensile-tailed porcupine baby, Siberian crane chicks, and red panda twins. Last year, Kiki, one of the zoo’s Western Lowland gorillas, gave birth to her third daughter. Bartlett says that most of the births proceed without problems. “The hoofstock generally have their babies at night,” she says. Her favorite animal is still the elephant, but since Zoo New England doesn’t have any, the tapirs (with their trunk-like noses) are her stand-in. Bartlett says that she has never been injured on the job. “Domestic animal vets are almost at more risk,” she says, “because they usually deal with animals who are awake.” But, she adds, “I do carry lots of insurance. “The fact that I get to work with these animals is an honor for me,” she says. Zoo animals, she reminds us, are ambassadors for their species. As for Hull, when Bartlett and her partner, Doris Davis, were looking for a home, “Hull was perfect,” the vet says. It is within an hour of her work, and you can “walk to the end of the street and be on the beach.” The couple bought their home in 2010. “Hull,” says Bartlett, “is special.” And so is the zoo. Bartlett hopes that you will visit. The tropical jungle, she says, complete with gorillas, is a good place to hang out in the winter. And the Stone Zoo in Stoneham features ZooLights, a popular seasonal light show, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day from 5-9 p.m. daily. www.hulltimes.com Obituaries Helen I. Cook, at 93 Hull resident Helen I. [Whittet] Cook, 93, formerly of Hingham, died Nov. 11, surrounded by her family, at the Golden Living Center of Cohasset. Born and raised in West Roxbury, she attended Girls Latin School in Boston, Rogers Hall Preparatory School, Marot College, Chandler Business School, and Chamberlain School or Retailing and Merchandising. It was during her college years that she acquired her nickname “Bunnie.” Mrs. Cook initially pursued her career in the fashion industry. In 1953, she and her late husband, George W. Cook, moved their growing family to Hingham, where she continued to work in office management. She lived in Hingham for 25 years before moving to Hull. She had a lifelong love of books, music, and animals. Mrs. Cook is survived by her three sons: Peter Cook and his wife, Maria Trozzi, of Boston, Richard Cook of Hull, and John Cook and his wife, Constance, of Lebanon, PA; her two daughters, Georgia Amonte and her husband, Robin, of Hingham, and Lisa Thurstone of Carver; 12 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. She was also blessed to have had many special friends, frequent visitors, and caregivers. Services were held Wednesday under the direction of Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, Hingham. Interment took place at Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain. Mrs. O’Brien was the former president of Damon Place Condominium Association and the founder of V.I.P. Group, Dorchester, for over 20 years. Beloved wife of the late James M. O’Brien, she was the longtime companion of Robert F. Anderson of Dorchester. Mrs. O’Brien was the loving mother of James M. O’Brien and his wife, Shellian, of Jamaica, Kerry A. McDonnell and her husband, John, of Dorchester, Linda A. Woods and her husband, Dennis, of Hull, and the late Michael J. O’Brien. Mrs. O’Brien also leaves a sister, Velvet Violet Giorlando of Wilmington; a brother, Manuel J. Rose of Lexington; a granddaughter; three grandsons; and a niece. Services have been held. Audrey M. Verville, at 77 Audrey M. [Johansson] Verville, age 77, died Nov. 2, at the Taunton Nursing Home, with her loving daughter at her side. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Eric and Viola [Erlandson] Johansson. A graduate of North Quincy High School, she was a longtime resident of the city of Brockton. She also spent several years in Pennsylvania, Hull, and Taunton. Mrs. Verville was a bookkeeper for many years for the former Pneumatic Scale Co. in Quincy and, along with her husband, operated the former North East Floral in Walpole. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling with her husband, and especially liked walking along the beach. Mrs. Verville was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Cohasset. The wife of the late William G. Verville Jr., she is survived by two sons, Billy Verville and his wife, Donna, of Dover, N.H. and Kenny Verville of Hull; a daughter, Susan Verville of Taunton; two grandchildren, Daniel Verville of Nashua, NH and Jennifer Verville of Norfolk; and a brother, Richard Johansson and his wife, Barbara, of New Jersey; as well as several nieces and nephews.
