for $1.5 million.
DeFranco bought the former Ocean Club restaurant
from Frank Plotner in May 2010 for $900,000,
according to Hull assessor records, but was forced to
sink substantial additional dollars into renovations in
the wake of the Boxing Day blizzard in December.
Building Commissioner Peter Lombardo last
week estimated that DeFranco spent at least $40,000
to $50,000 to rebuild the multi-storied restaurant’s
first-floor interior and two exterior decks.
If you have ever been to the Franklin Park Zoo or
the Stone Zoo, you probably did not know that there
is a Hull resident working behind the scenes to keep
the animals healthy.
As an associate veterinarian at Zoo New England
(the organization of which both zoos are members),
Hull resident Dr. Susie Bartlett regularly gets to hobnob
with lemurs and tapirs, zebras and wildebeest,
lions, tigers, and pandas. She gets to treat everything
from prehensile-tailed porcupines to gorillas.
As a child growing up in Medfield, Bartlett was
interested in wildlife and was an inveterate collector
of elephant figures. But it wasn’t until the middle of
her college years at Barnard that she realized that her
calling was veterinary medicine.
Bartlett subsequently attended Cornell University
College of Veterinary Medicine, did an internship at
Tufts Wildlife Clinic in North Grafton, and a threeyear
residency at Cornell, working at the Rosamond
Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, New York. She holds a DVM
degree and is a “diplomate” of the American College
of Zoological Medicine.
Goodbye Keating, Hello
Lynch: Hull shuffled into
8th Congressional District
By Catherine Goldhammer
Starting in 2012, the Massachusetts
congressional district map will have a
decidedly different shape. Hull is one of
the towns that will find itself redistricted.
Every 10 years, at the start of the
state legislative session, a committee
convenes to review and make recommendations
on the state’s voting districts
based on the new U.S. census figures.
This year, due to decreases in population,
the state will go from 10 districts
to nine. Rep. John Olver from the 1 st
Congressional District is retiring, so
every current congressman still has a
district – at least until the General Election
next November – but the makeup of
the districts has changed.
The towns of the South Shore, currently
part of one district, will be split
in half.
On the new map, Hull, along with
Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate, Weymouth
and Quincy, will become part of
District 8, which also includes Dedham,
Brockton, and South Boston. It will be
represented by Congressman Stephen
Lynch.
According to the listing, the sale offering includes
the building, all equipment, and the liquor license,
“subject to state transfer.”
DeFranco would be “willing to stay and train [the]
new owner…”
The parcel could also be suitable for “possible real
estate development,” according to sales materials.
Assessor records detail 22,540 square feet of land
and a 3,893 square-foot building. The parcel is zoned
Commercial Rec C, the building commissioner said
today when contacted by the Times. According to
Lombardo’s cursory reading of the zoning bylaw,
multi-family housing would be allowed under town
statute. The property owner could build at least four
condos on the site.
The Nantasket Beach property sits at the base of
State Park Rd., tucked between the ocean and several
condo projects, including the Atlantic Hill “pyramid”
units, Oceania, and – across Nantasket Ave. – Ocean
Place.
DeFranco reopened <strong>BeachFire</strong> in May, after completing
storm renovations. He abruptly closed the
247-seat restaurant and small-functions facility early
this month, citing health problems.
According to selectmen’s office manager Terri
Finneran, DeFranco has not yet notified the board that
the restaurant is closed, although such notification to
the licensing authority is a condition of his permit to
sell alcohol.
Finneran today said the board also has not received
notification from DeFranco that the property has been
listed for sale. ∞
Hull resident’s workday really is ‘a day at the zoo’
One of the Tufts projects she worked on was studying
black-crowned night herons on Sarah’s Island in
Hingham Harbor. She finished the days, she said,
“covered in bird poop, regurge [vet talk for regurgitation],
and sweat, and I loved it.”
Of her work at Zoo New England, she said that
“preventing disease is probably the number one task.”
Animals receive regular physical exams. Some
of these require the animals to be sedated. However,
you might be surprised to know that you can take
blood samples from tigers, lions, and gorillas without
anesthetizing them. They feed the tiger from the front
end while drawing blood from the tail. (Don’t try this
at home.)
Tapirs, which are seven-foot-long creatures that
resemble a cross between a pig and a rhinoceros, with
a little elephant thrown in, like to be scratched. If you
attach a brush to a long pole and brush them for a
while, “they will lie down like a dog” and let you do
the exam, Bartlett says.
The other side of Bartlett’s job is managing illness
and injury. Bartlett says that the zookeepers are the
first to see the animals every day and “they notice
The knowledge that Hull has been severed from
the 10 th Congressional District is unsettling.
We sort of feel like a baseball player who unexpectedly
finds he’s been traded. And not the marquee
name player whom all the teams want. We feel like the
utility guy who never really made the grade anyway
and just kinda got thrown into the mix.
We knew our place in the 10 th . We’re small, but
then so are many of our fellow district towns, particularly
those on the Cape. We’re a coastal community in
a district awash with coastal communities. We share
the same challenges and the same opportunities.
Since Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate, Weymouth,
and Quincy are in the same boat as Hull in being
moved into Congressman Stephen Lynch’s District
8, we know we’re not alone.
And it’s not as if Congressman William Keating
has represented us for a long time. We’re still getting
to know each other, in fact.
But Hull seemed to like him and, as he told the
Times this week, he embraced Hull, so our courtship
seemed to be progressing nicely.
Now we feel jilted and we have to start all over
with a suitor who may not suit us.
Then again, he may suit us very well and, heaven
knows, the town may charm him. This Southie girl
recognizes certain key similarities between Hull and
Lynch’s hometown. We’ll have to see how it plays out.
The thing is, it would have been nice if someone
had alerted us that this was coming before it was a fait
accompli. We’re not saying it’s unfair, we just haven’t
yet had time enough to analyze the data. And, anyway,
no one seems to care how we feel.
The final redistricting maps were unveiled last
week and – Presto! – the Legislature voted on them
yesterday [Wednesday]. It took months and months
to configure the redistricting maps but, because our
legislators want their seven weeks off for their holiday
break, the people affected got next to no time to react.
It’s the high-handedness of it all that’s so galling.
Until the Times called them, neither state Rep. Garrett
Bradley, who sat on the redistricting committee,
nor our state senator, Robert Hedlund, uttered a word
on the topic.
Keating put out a short statement saying he would
Letters to the Editor
School accreditation supporters are a credit
to the community…
To the Editor:
Wow! What an amazing week at Hull High School!
During the four days that the NEASC visiting team
spent at Hull High School:
• Almost 200 people heard about the strengths and
needs of our school from Prince Charming and Cinderella
[a/k/a Andrew Ollerhead and Alyssa Steen],
Superintendent Dr. Tyrell, our student body president,
Molly Kane, members of our Leadership class, Hull
High School teachers Mark Galligan, Edwin Menon,
Deanne Zella, and Amanda Held;
• Every single HHS teacher, student services staff
member, administrator, and support staff member was
interviewed by one or more visiting team member;
• 16 parents participated in an interview panel;
• More than 200 students and parents attended a welcoming
reception and heard fantastic music from the
new and improved HHS band;
• 25 students were interviewed by a visiting team member;
• 32 students were shadowed; and
• Every teacher in our school was observed while
teaching.
In my conversations with the visiting team members,
all said that our community has been so welcoming
to them. They all commented on the respect,
honesty, and enthusiasm shown by our students. They
also said that, while they realize that our school has a
great deal of work still to do, there are so many great
things happening at Hull High School, and so much
that should bring pride to our community.
So, a heartfelt “Thank you!” goes out to all the
parents who attended the NEASC events and to all
those who brought chili, soup, stew, chowder, appetizers,
drinks, and desserts. We could not have done
move from Quincy to his summer home on the Cape
to avoid an elective collision with Lynch.
Lynch hasn’t yet come a-calling.
Now we know how Tim Wakefield feels. ∞
it without you.
A very special thank you goes out to the members
of our School Council, the Hull Public Schools IT
staff, Joe Doniger, Karen Powers, Fran Troy, and
Peter Seitz.
Finally, the faculty and staff of Hull High School,
led by Mark Galligan and Edwin Menon, spent more
than two years preparing for this visit. In addition to
teaching their students, they created rubrics, wrote
reports, and gathered evidence to prepare for the visit.
Our students and our community are indeed fortunate
to have such outstanding professionals working in
our schools.
We will not receive the official word from NEASC
about our accreditation status until late May, but no
matter what they say, I am so proud to be a part of this
amazing learning community. Every student, teacher,
staff member, and citizen of Hull has reason to be a
proud Pirate this week.
Sincerely,
Michael F. Devine, Principal
Hull High School
Village lot is going to the dogs – and that’s
a good thing…
To the Editor:
Last week’s zoning board of appeals meeting certainly
was a love fest for Dog Peace, a remarkable,
small, family-run business in town. As a very appreciative
client, I wasn’t surprised to see over 30 other
enthusiastic friends of the dog-care business crowd
into the selectmen’s meeting room to proclaim their
support for Jill and Dave Orpen. What most impressed
me, though, was the presence of John Ring, who has
leased a small piece of his property to the Orpens for
the business’s use two hours a day, four days a week,
and Ceil Garber, who runs the also beloved Sunshine
Pet Parlor on Nantasket Ave.
You might think that John, who collects a very
modest rent for use of his land, would want to steer
clear of a zoning dispute in his side yard. After all, Hull
being Hull and a town of many zoning oddities, he
runs a boatyard in the middle of the town’s otherwise
pretty sedate historic district.
Ceil, on the other hand, might be seen as an outright
competitor of Jill and Dave’s. Yet she spoke
eloquently at the board of appeals meeting in support
of their small business. I think that both John and
Ceil deserve applause for being great neighbors and
friends, and for fighting to help keep Dog Peace going
strong, especially in an economy that is forcing
so many businesses to close.
Every Hull resident knows firsthand the challenges
After frenetic week, key
legislative priorities unresolved
By Kyle Cheney
STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE
In typical, 11th-hour fashion, lawmakers
wrote a frenetic final chapter
to the 2011 legislative session, blazing
through bills to introduce casino gambling,
protect transgender residents, and
implement pension reforms that have
languished for years on Beacon Hill.
In a cyclone of legislating that
began Tuesday afternoon, lawmakers
also enacted bills to redraw state and
Congressional political districts that will
set the political landscape for a decade,
imposed harsh penalties for forced labor
or prostitution, and raised the minimum
retirement age for state workers to 60.
The mad rush to beat a midnight
deadline on Wednesday – it’s the midpoint
of the two-year session, with
formal meetings due to resume in January
– left breathless lawmakers touting
accomplishments that will become 2012
campaign staples, along with previous
efforts to overhaul state alimony laws,
impose strict limits on the use of recommendations
in hiring for state jobs,
reorganize the state’s judicial bureaucracy,
and strength the hand of municipal
officials in healthcare negotiations with
local unions.
As the House and Senate depart for a
seven-week recess, they’ve got more left
on their plate for year two of the session.
A priority identified as a savior for small
businesses, controlling the skyrocketing
cost of health care, remains unaddressed.
Gov. Deval Patrick identified healthcare
cost containment in his January
inaugural address, pledging to reform
medical malpractice laws and overhaul
the healthcare payment and delivery
system. He and his top deputies spent
months demanding urgent action, calling
on lawmakers to send him a bill this
year. He has since softened his position,
seeking a commitment from legislative
leaders to act on payment reform legislation
in January, although he’s declined
to say whether he has received such a
promise.
Senate President Therese Murray,
who has also pinpointed healthcare
payment reform as a top priority this
session, said she’s not disappointed with
the holdup on legislation.
“That’s not an easy fix. That’s a very
difficult issue to deal with and David
Seltz from my office is our healthcare
policy person. Most of the staff continue
to work on that,” she said.
Looking forward to 2012, Murray
added, “We’re going to be addressing the
high cost of energy as well … working
with Senator Downing on more competition
in the electric industry.”
Asked about taking final action on a
gambling bill, Murray said with a smile,
“I don’t want to talk to you guys about
gaming ever again.
“Now that it’s out of the hands of the
Legislature,” she said, gesturing toward
the governor’s State House suite, “you
can go down the hall and then you can
let us know how it’s working.”
Also unresolved is an increasing
clamor for a government solution to what
has been widely identified as daunting,
economy-hampering backlog of road,
bridge, and rail repairs – exacerbated by
a multi-billion dollar debt burden on the
transportation system. The governor and
top lawmakers have repeatedly called for
an “adult conversation” on the possibility
of raising new revenue to pay for a
multi-billion-dollar backlog of transportation
needs, but leaders who pitched a
“reform before revenue” mantra in 2009
have not presented a plan or a timetable
for one, even with T fares poised for an
increase next year.
Also left unaddressed by the House
this year was a bill Murray touted to rewrite
the state’s finance laws, implement
performance management metrics for
state agencies, and implement more accurate
measures to project the economic
impact of state policies. A Senate-passed
bill to redesign the state’s network of services
for truants, runaways, and children
in need of services has also yet to emerge
for House consideration.
The year’s legislative activity included
an extraordinary reliance on the
work of the Judiciary Committee, which
had jurisdiction over legislation on transgender
nondiscrimination, sentencing,
South Shore Seahawks
youth hockey recap
Here’s a summary of last weekend’s South Shore
Seahawks action.
The Mite A team took on Milton and came up big,
winning 6-3. The teams were a bit timid early on, but
the Seahawks quickly built the pressure with nifty
passing and stingy defense.
Late in the first, Jake Sannella worked the puck
down the offensive sideboard and found Declan Scott
at the top of the circle, who fed an open Kevin Leary
for the Seahawks’ first goal. The Seahawks added
to their lead in the second with Kevin Leary taking
a loose puck and going in alone, beating the Milton
goalie stick-side. Leary completed his natural hat trick
a few minutes later on a carbon copy goal of his first.
Sannella pushed the puck into the offensive zone
where Scott won the battle in the corner and found
Leary open out front for the one timer. Dylan Mc-
Donald buried the Seahawks’ fourth goal on a nasty
shot, upper left, following a tremendous feed from
Thomas Capadonna.
Milton quickly responded, leaving the score at 4-1
after two. Solid defensive play from the Aidan Sylvester,
Matty Belsan, Jack Ryan, and Chris Sullivan
frustrated the Milton offensive attack in the third and
they were able to generate some nice outlet plays.
This solid play in their own zone set up the Seahawks’
next goal. With Scott camped out in front of the net,
Leary found space down low and made a nice pass to
Scott, who one-timed it home. McDonald closed out
the scoring for the Seahawks on another sweet corner
pass from the gritty Capadonna. This time McDonald
made a move to his backhand and roofed it.
The win went to goalie Ryan Roseanau, who was
again solid between the pipes. Coach Karle noted that
the solid defensive play opened up the ice and the team
was able to ride that strong effort by the blueliners
throughout the game.
The Pee Wee B team took on a resilient Hingham
squad, falling 3-1 over the weekend. It was a hardfought
game with both teams trading solid play on
both sides of the ice.
The Seahawks came out with a little extra step and
put the team ahead early in the first period with Christian
Raeside burying the puck following a Hingham
turnover. Hingham responded quickly on the power
play, beating the Seahawks’ net minder glove-side.
The teams battled through a scoreless second period.
Seahawks’ penalties in the third opened the door
for Hingham as it netted two goals to seal the game
midway through the period.
Coach Olivieri commented that the team never
gave up and the effort will be something they build on.
The Squirt B White team battled Hanover B
White, losing 6-2. The team got big saves from net
minder Shea Sullivan, but the team just couldn’t beat
his tough Hanover counterpart until the third period.
Jack Thompson got the Seahawks on the scoreboard
early in the third period on a juicy rebound. Will Hoyt
took the initial shot and was credited with the assist.
The Seahawks’ next tally came off the stick of
Ryan Flynn. Jack Bedford circled the top of the offensive
zone and, catching Flynn out of the corner of
his eye, made a nice pass for the assist.
The Squirt B White squad is looking forward to
facing a top Hingham Red team in their next tilt. ∞
10 THE HULL TIMES, Thursday, November 17, 2011 www.hulltimes.com
Redistricting
Continued from page 1
Hull is currently represented by
Congressman William Keating. Keating,
who lives in Quincy, will move to his
Cape Cod home in Bourne, from which
he will represent the newly created
District 9, which will include the South
Shore towns of Marshfield and Duxbury,
along with Plymouth, New Bedford, Fall
River, Cape Cod, and the Islands.
One of the primary goals of the redistricting
committee was to create a district
that accurately reflects the numbers of
minority voters in the city of Boston.
In the past, Boston area minority voters
were split up among several different
districts that splintered the city.
State Rep. Garrett Bradley, a Democrat
who represents Hull, Hingham,
Cohasset, and part of Scituate, was on
the Joint Committee on Redistricting.
Bradley said that he is happy with the
partitioning plan. “When you go from
10 seats to nine seats, there are going to
have to be changes,” he said.
“We have been well served by Congressman
Keating and will be well served
by Congressman Lynch,” Bradley said.
He said that the redistricting was based
on numbers, not on “gerrymandering” or
political motivations, as it has been in the
past. Gerrymandering is the practice of
creating voting districts that are based on
partisan politics and designed to protect
incumbent congressmen.
Bradley said that the response to the
new district map has been “generally
positive.” When the state was redistricted
in 2002, he said, “We got sued
by everybody.”
State Sen. Robert Hedlund, a Weymouth
Republican whose district also
includes Hull, has a different point of
view. “I have a lot of constituents that
are not happy,” he said this week.
The redistricting was dictated by
politics and gerrymandering, he said,
describing it as “geographic gymnastics,”
referring to the “crazy lines” of the
sometimes jaggedly defined districts of
the new map.
The redistricting committee, he explained,
had representatives from both
parties, but the Democrats held the majority.
The committee’s map protects incumbents,
he said. “It’s all driven by politics.”
On Tuesday, when the new proposed
district map was debated by the Legislature,
Hedlund and the other members
of the Republican Caucus introduced an
alternative plan designed to keep Hull
and other South Shore towns together,
in the same district as they are now.
“Maritime interests should remain
together,” the senator said.
According to Hedlund, the redistricting
committee’s map splits 10 communities
and, in certain cases, splits precincts
within towns.
“Our plan only splits five communities,”
he said. “Our plan splits zero
precincts.”
The Republican alternative, he said
is compact and “draws communities
together based on common interests.”
He said it would preserve the minority/majority
district in Boston, but “not
at the expense of dividing communities.”
The alternative map was defeated
in the Senate on Wednesday by a vote
of 31-6.
A group called Reunite the Coast
also takes issue with the redistricting. Its
website calls for a district that unites the
South Shore and “connects it to the Cape
and the South Coast. With fishing fleets,
maritime infrastructure like seawalls,
and tourism, these communities share a
lot in common. The South Shore communities
of Weymouth, Hingham, Hull,
Cohasset, and Scituate further benefit by
having a congressman advocating for a
district full of coastal towns instead of a
Congressman too preoccupied by urban
Boston and inland issues to attend to the
four coastal towns in his large district.”
An email from the group said that
“Hull has almost nothing in common
with urban Boston and inland cities and
towns like Brockton and Dedham, but
we share almost everything in common
with Marshfield, Plymouth, Cape Cod,
and the South Coast.”
Keating was elected to Congress in
2010, to succeed William D. Delahunt,
who retired.
Town Manager Philip Lemnios said
this week that Keating, in his short
tenure representing Hull, has been very
attentive to the town’s needs. “His enthusiasm
will be missed,” Lemnios said.
But, he added, “If Rep. Lynch is his
replacement, I don’t think we could do
any better.
“He has proven time and time again
to work very hard for his constituents,”
Lemnios said.
In a telephone interview from Washington,
Keating said he will continue to
work hard for the town and the district
until the current term ends.
He has, he said, an affinity for the
town. “Hull embraced me while I was
running, and I embraced Hull.”
Keating, who said he did not have a
hand in the redistricting decisions, cited
the unique characteristics and coastal
issues of the South Shore towns.
Up to the Minute – The Lewenberg guys enjoyed the Colonial Clash tailgate
with a friend before the recent football game between the UMass Minutemen
and the UNH Wildcats. The Lewenbergs are UMass/Amherst alumni. L to
R: Paul Lewenberg, Roger Lewenberg, Sean Louisdaux, and Peter Lewenberg.
“There is a commonality among the
coastal communities,” he said. “The
South Shore has never been broken in
two.” ∞
State House
Continued from page 3
O’Flaherty [D-Chelsea] and Sen. Cynthia
Creem [D-Newton].
The fate of Senate plans to make
wholesale changes to the state’s criminal
statutes – enhancing authorities’ wiretapping
power, reducing mandatory minimum
sentences for some drug crimes,
reconfiguring drug weights in sentencing,
and restricting parole for third-time
violent offenders – remains murky.
The House voted 142-12 Wednesday
night to pass a sharply pared version of
that plan, limiting it only to the crackdown
on repeat offenders, but the Senate
will insist on its own, more comprehensive
version, likely kicking a resolution
into the new year.
“We look forward to conferencing
this over the next two months so that
when we come back in January we have
a bill we can vote on,” Murray said.
Although it may not appear in any
campaign literature, lawmakers also
agreed to a substantial change to the
state’s alcohol statutes, raising the limit
on alcohol licenses available to chains
and food stores. The bill advanced suddenly
this fall at the urging of package
stores, retailers, and supermarkets who
were threatening to take a more sweeping
proposal to the 2012 ballot.
In addition to healthcare payment
reform, other key pieces of the governor’s
agenda have languished this year,
including his call to implement legislation
to crack down on gun crimes and
youth violence, as well as to support
changes in sentencing laws to deemphasize
mandatory minimum sentences for
nonviolent drug crimes and those that
occur in school zones.
Some of the most substantial policymaking
this year occurred in the
near-constant budgeting by the House
and Senate, which have made it clear
that passing spending plans every one
to two months – often laden with policy
initiatives – is their preferred means of
managing the state’s fiscal condition.
Legislative leaders also held firm on a
pledge to hold the line on taxes, two years
after embracing a sales tax increase.
As they head for their recess, lawmakers
may also receive some welcome
news from Patrick administration budget
officials, who are on track to certify an
automatic reduction in the income tax
for Massachusetts workers next month.
Patrick’s budget chief Jay Gonzalez said
the reduction is likely, thanks to sharply
increasing revenue collections that have
outpaced inflation.
Lawmakers also spent their final
hours passing proposals backed by
labor unions, who earlier in the year
were enraged at efforts to curb collective
bargaining power of some local
employees and who protested pension
system reforms in the past month.
Two bills – one to codify the use of
so-called evergreen clauses in collective
bargaining contracts, the other to
empower MBTA workers to collectively
bargain for supplemental healthcare
benefits – headed to the governor on the
final night of the session. ∞
Their fingers are all over it – Scouts of all ages
took part in Hull’s Veterans’ Day ceremony… [Roger
Jackson photo]
Letters
Continued from page 2
with living in a small town with urban-density houses.
We all know our neighbors well, whether we want
to or not! We put up with crying babies, late-night
honking cars, barking dogs, yelling parents, and even
pre-dawn lobster boat engines. These sounds are part
of the fabric of life in our town. Jill and Dave, both
lifetime Hullonians, are deeply woven into that fabric.
While raising three young daughters in town, Jill
and Dave have developed an outstanding business
that serves, over the course of any given week, about
30 dogs and their families. By bringing the dogs to
a 40-minute playgroup, and giving them fresh air, a
time to socialize, and careful supervision, Jill and
Dave help our pets (and our families) remain healthy
and happy. And, they do this with amazing discretion,
training their dogs not to bark and fastidiously cleaning
the yard throughout playtime.
Jill and Dave are hoping to be able to continue to
operate their two playgroups in a 1,000-square-foot
lot on the side of John Ring’s boatyard. Each group
serves 8-12 dogs a day between 1-3:30 p.m., Tuesday-
Friday. The closest neighbor’s house is 70 feet away,
on the far side of their lot, and is separated from John’s
boat-repair business by a 12-foot arborvitae hedge and
an additional five-foot setback. John has even agreed
to install a stockade fence along the property line, in
order to help Jill and Dave keep their business afloat.
Kudos to Ceil and John, two local businesspeople
who are working to help keep another family-run enterprise
alive. And, kudos to Jill and Dave Orpen for
offering such a wonderful, respectful, and responsive
service in town.
Sincerely,
Lory Newmyer
Thanks a lot!
To the Editor:
In spite of the cool and windy conditions on this
You made this day very special and eventful, a day
everybody went home with a Christmas centerpiece
that Paul Split helped us make.
Helen Weiser, Publicity Chair ∞
anything unusual,” including changes in the animal’s
eating, behavior, weight, or mobility, at which point
they call on the zoo vets.
Among Bartlett’s more challenging cases was
saving the lives of reindeer infected with a tick-born
infectious disease. In spite of rigorous preventative
measures, the disease sometimes occurs, and “Once
they get sick, you have 24 hours to save their lives,”
Bartlett says.
Another challenge, which occurred during her
residency, was an elephant that required surgical
intervention to successfully birth her calf.
Babies are, of course, a regular occurrence at
zoos, and the Franklin Park Zoo “had a good year,”
according to Bartlett. In the past six months, the Boston
zoo has welcomed lemur twins, a Grant’s zebra
foal, wildebeest and bongo babies, a prehensile-tailed
porcupine baby, Siberian crane chicks, and red panda
twins. Last year, Kiki, one of the zoo’s Western Lowland
gorillas, gave birth to her third daughter.
Bartlett says that most of the births proceed without
problems. “The hoofstock generally have their babies
at night,” she says.
Her favorite animal is still the elephant, but since
Zoo New England doesn’t have any, the tapirs (with
their trunk-like noses) are her stand-in.
Bartlett says that she has never been injured on the
job. “Domestic animal vets are almost at more risk,”
she says, “because they usually deal with animals
who are awake.”
But, she adds, “I do carry lots of insurance.
“The fact that I get to work with these animals is
an honor for me,” she says. Zoo animals, she reminds
us, are ambassadors for their species.
As for Hull, when Bartlett and her partner, Doris
Davis, were looking for a home, “Hull was perfect,”
the vet says. It is within an hour of her work, and you
can “walk to the end of the street and be on the beach.”
The couple bought their home in 2010.
“Hull,” says Bartlett, “is special.”
And so is the zoo. Bartlett hopes that you will visit.
The tropical jungle, she says, complete with gorillas,
is a good place to hang out in the winter.
And the Stone Zoo in Stoneham features ZooLights,
a popular seasonal light show, from Thanksgiving to
New Year’s Day from 5-9 p.m. daily. [Closed Christmas.]
Hull
100 Years ago this week
Compiled from The Hull Beacon
by John J. Galluzzo
November 17, 1911
• The morning of November 1 a fishing
vessel, Susan and Mary, coming from the
fishing banks heavily laden with fish and
bound for Boston, was wrecked on the
rocks, due to the fog, off Point Allerton.
It was discovered by J. H. Murphy as he
was on patrol south. He summoned help
from the lifesaving station and under the
direction of Capt. W. Sparrow, the lifesavers
got the crew of 18 men on board
and five of them were kept at the station
for five days. The captain of the vessel
was G. B. Anderson. The vessel belonged
to the Maritime Atlantic Fish Co.
and was valued at $12,000. The 60,000
pounds of fish was valued at $2500 and
was given away. After stripping the
vessel she was sold to a junk dealer for
$215. Capt. Sparrow has performed 26
wreck duties since 1 August. Last year
he performed 50, so has a pretty good
chance this year of beating the record.
• Mrs. Reynolds is to build three houses
upon her land in front of the Rockland
house. Mrs. Reynolds is a delightful
conversationalist, cordial in manner, and
is a very charming woman.
• Why has no reporter written up the
christening of Mr. and Mrs. Paolo
Taurasi’s young son? It was a social
event of prominence in Hull, for which
great preparations were made and where
more than 50 guests were assembled, not
counting the children. Many people from
Boston were present to pay court to the
young heir, and the whole affair was a
brilliant success.
• During the high windstorm Sunday
and Monday the spray dashing over the
rocks and the shores of Hog Island was
a magnificent sight, kissed as it was into
prismatic color by the sun’s rays.
• Mr. Hubbard of Q Street landed the
grandfather of all smelts last Saturday,
which measured 11 inches in length, and
was captured in Hull Bay off Hog Island.
• It was a pitiful and shameful sight
to see a woman helped off the train at
Whitehead last Friday so filled with
liquor that she staggered. To see men
intoxicated is lamentable enough, but
for a woman to be so lost to all sense of
decency is shocking.
• Every fall large numbers of skates drift
upon our shores, and then flounder about
until they die. An old sailor says it is their
habit to do so when they instinctively
realize that they are “on their last legs.”
If only they could be persuaded to “kick
the bucket” a little farther out, where
the current would take care of their foul
smelling remains, it would be a consummation
devoutly to be wished.
• Miss Vining has been presented with a
magnificent pedigreed St. Bernard dog a
year and half old.
• Linemen have been very busy the past
two days repairing the wreckage by the
high wind of Sunday. At Green Hill, near
the Straits Pond House, four poles carrying
electric light and telephone wires
were blown down, making it dangerous
passing, and a policeman was stationed
there to warn people.
• James A. Parsons and John A. Morton
spent the Sunday at Hull, guests of Miss
2nd Annual
Thanksgiving Dinner
