Third Quarterly Report<br />

At or about 0215 hrs, the robbers onboard Scorpio saw a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency<br />

(MMEA) patrol boat, KM Marudu in the vicinity and escaped in a high powered woo<strong>de</strong>n boat. The<br />

patrol boat gave chase but was unable to intercept. According to the investigation carried out by<br />

MMEA, a crew from Scorpio was or<strong>de</strong>red to assist in the transfer of marine fuel oil from Scorpio to Sea<br />

Ja<strong>de</strong> while the other 11 crew was locked insi<strong>de</strong> the tanker’s mess room. The robbers had impersonated<br />

as the crew of Scorpio and offered to sell fuel to Sea Ja<strong>de</strong> at below market price. Almost 750 tons<br />

of fuel oil was siphoned from Scorpio to Sea Ja<strong>de</strong>. The robbers left behind six parangs (long knives)<br />

onboard Scorpio, and escaped with the crew’s personal belongings including cash, mobile phones<br />

and laptops.<br />

Sea Ja<strong>de</strong> and her 12 crew; together with Scorpio were <strong>de</strong>tained by the MMEA to assist in<br />

further investigation.<br />

Observations<br />

This is the first time the ReCAAP ISC was informed about a tanker being boar<strong>de</strong>d, and taken to<br />

another location where the marine fuel oil was siphoned to another vessel. The ReCAAP ISC<br />

commends the MMEA for their efforts in suppressing maritime crime in the region.<br />
