$144.3 Million Wagered
On Breeders’ Cup Races
Breeders’ Cup reported that a total of nearly $144.3
million was wagered on the two-day World
Championships November 2-3 at Santa Anita Park,
down from the $161.5 million figure a year ago when
the event was hosted by Churchill Downs.
Also, the two-day attendance of 89,742 represented
a decline from the 105,820 on hand at
Churchill in 2011.
Wagering on the 12-race November 3 card was
$96,685,567, compared with 2011 handle of
$105,472,442 for the second day of the World
Championships.
On-track handle for the two days at Santa Anita
Park was $20,680,143, up slightly over the
$19,208,111 total for the 2009 event at Santa
Anita, the last time the Championships were held at
at Southern California racetrack.
“We were witness to two days of amazing athletic
performances by the world’s best Thoroughbreds
with winners from the East, Midwest, South
America, Europe and California and seven winners
this weekend from our Breeders’ Cup Challenge
White Horse Award To Late Remington Worker
A 24-year-old Remington Park maintenance department employee who
died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident in March was honored
posthumously November 1 with the White Horse Award from the Race Track
Chaplaincy of America.
The sequence of events that led to the death of Michael C. Priddy began
when the Quarter Horse Jimi Jive unseated his rider and ran up the chute. A
strapping seven-footer who had been a committed employee at the Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma, track since April 2011, Priddy sprang into action.
In an effort to keep the gelding from leaving the track, Priddy moved
quickly to close a gate left open when the maintenance tractors entered the track. Before
Priddy could complete his task, Jimi Jive rammed the gate, slamming into Priddy’s body and
seriously injuring the worker. Despite several hours of surgery, Priddy died March 4.
“All at Remington Park were heart-broken—not just to have lost a team member, but
because of the kind of team member he was,” a testimonial to Priddy in the White Horse
Awards program stated. “He was a loyal, hard-working young man who was very proud of his
job. His pride showed in the way he did his job.”—continued at www.Bloodhorse.com, By Ron Mitchell,
Gulfstream Serious About Breeders’ Cup Bid
Gulfstream Park could make a serious bid to host a future Breeders’ Cup World
Championships, officials confirmed November 2.
Officials with The Stronach Group have been in regular contact with Breeders’ Cup officials
to determine what would be required of the South Florida racetrack. Gulfstream obviously
would require major expansion, but The Stronach Group already has those plans in
place.
Gulfstream president Tim Ritvo said owner Frank Stronach plans a “major build-out” on
the property, including two hotels and seating that could accommodate up to 65,000 people.
Major construction would begin after the Gulfstream meet ends in early April 2013.
Yavapai Downs: Bankruptcy
Court approves Sale Of Track
To HBPA President
A bankruptcy court on Tuesday approved the sale
of Yavapai Downs for $5.5 million to Gary Miller,
the president of the state’s Horsemen’s Benevolent
and Protective Association.
The approval clears the way for the possibility
that the Prescott, Arizona, track will reopen for a
summer season next year. The track closed abruptly
just prior to the 2011 racing season, and its owner,
the Yavapai County Farm and Agriculture
Association, then filed for bankruptcy.—continued at
investment incentives for
you in 2012!
Investment incentives continue in 2012 for the horse industry, making it another attractive year to invest in horses, farm
equipment and other qualified depreciable property.
1. 50% BONUS DEPRECIATION – Substantial write-offs on new property!
• For new property purchases; the original use of the property must commence with the taxpayer
• Examples of qualifying property include yearlings and new tractors/farm equipment
• Qualifying property must be purchased and placed in service before 1/1/2013
• The full 50% bonus depreciation write-off is allowed regardless of when during 2012 the qualifying property is
purchased and placed in service
• Bonus depreciation expires in 2013
• Can be used in conjunction with the expense allowance
2. $125,000 EXPENSE ALLOWANCE – Write off up to $125,000 in used property!
• The expense allowance is $125,000
• To qualify, property may be new or used
• Qualifying property must be purchased and placed in service before 1/1/2013
• Can only be used to reduce taxable income derived from the horse business or any other business from which
taxpayer has income, including salaries
• The expense allowance is reduced dollar for dollar once qualified investments exceed $500,000
• Can be used in conjunction with bonus depreciation

Investment incentives are scheduled to change in 2013.
TAX BENEFIT 2012 2013
Bonus Depreciation Rate 50% n/a
Expensing
- Allowance $125,000 $25,000
- Phase-out level $500,000 $200,000
Additional information
• The expense allowance and bonus depreciation can be used together—they are not mutually
exclusive
• How do the benefits apply for bloodstock purchases?
– Yearlings – bonus depreciation and expense allowance
– Two-year-olds in training – possibly both (consult your tax advisor)
– Pregnant broodmares – expense allowance
– Barren broodmares – possibly expense allowance (consult your tax advisor)
– Weanlings – neither because too young to be “placed in service” in horse business
• How do the benefits apply for farm equipment and other essentials?
– New tractors or other farm heavy equipment and new farm facilities (barns, sheds, fences and
associated construction costs) – combine benefits
– Used tractors or other farm heavy equipment – expense allowance
Don’t forget about accelerated depreciation!
Through 2013, taxpayers will be able to depreciate
all racehorses on a 3-year schedule. During
this time, taxpayers may use the accelerated
depreciation schedule on any remaining
balance that is not written off when taking
the tax benefits described above.
This information is provided by the National
Thoroughbred Racing Association as a courtesy to the
racing industry. For more information, please consult
your tax advisor or visit www.IRS.gov.

2012 INVESTMENT INCENTIVES
EXAMPLES
50% BONUS DEPRECIATION – Applies to new qualified depreciable property that is purchased
and placed in service in 2012.
Example: An individual purchases five yearlings for $500,000 and a new tractor for $50,000 in
2012 and places the yearlings in training and uses the tractor in 2012. The purchaser can write off
(depreciate) half of the cost of each on his or her 2012 tax return.
$500,000 yearlings
$50,000 new tractor
TOTAL qualified purchases = $550,000 x .50 bonus depreciation = $275,000 write-off
$125,000 EXPENSE ALLOWANCE – Applies to new or used qualified depreciable property that is
purchased and placed in service in 2012 ($500,000 investment threshold applies).
Example A: An individual purchases a $100,000 broodmare and a $25,000 tractor in 2012 and places
both in service in 2012. The purchaser makes no other qualifying purchases of horses or other
business property during the year. The individual can expense (write off) the entire $125,000 cost
of the broodmare and tractor in 2012.
$100,000 broodmare
$25,000 tractor
TOTAL qualified purchases = $125,000; minus $125,000 expense allowance = $0 balance
Example B: An individual purchases three broodmares for $500,000 and a $25,000 tractor in 2012
and places all of this property in service in 2012. The purchaser makes no other qualifying purchases
of horses or other business property during the year. If purchases exceed the $500,000 investment
threshold, the expense allowance is reduced by $1 for every dollar over $500,000 in qualifying
property. In this case, purchases total $525,000 and the expense allowance drops to $100,000.
$500,000 broodmares
$25,000 tractor
TOTAL qualified purchases = $525,000; minus $500,000 threshold = $25,000 excessive investment;
$125,000 expense allowance minus $25,000 excessive investment = $100,000 expense allowance
permitted in Example B. The remaining balance ($525,000 in qualified purchases minus $100,000
expense allowance = $425,000) would be depreciated using normal depreciation rules.
50% BONUS DEPRECIATION & $125,000 EXPENSE ALLOWANCE USED TOGETHER –
These two incentives are not mutually exclusive and may be used together in some cases.
Example: An individual purchases a yearling for $300,000 in 2012 and places it in service in 2012. The
purchases can expense $125,000 and also take 50% bonus depreciation. The remaining balance would
be depreciated using normal depreciation rules.
$300,000 yearling
TOTAL qualified purchases = $300,000; minus $125,000 expense allowance = $175,000; minus
50% bonus depreciation ($175,000 x .50) = $87,500; total write-off = $212,500 ($125,000 expense
allowance + $87,500 bonus depreciation). The remaining $87,500 balance ($300,000 yearling
purchase minus $212,500 write-off) would be depreciated using regular depreciation rules.
