A California-bred filly by Salt Lake (Golden Eagle
Farm) sold for $37,000 to top the 2008 CTBA Sales’
Northern California Yearling Sale at the Sonoma
County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa on August 26.
The sale, the fifth presented in Northern
California in its current format by the California
Thoroughbred Breeders Association, grossed
$504,700, with 106 individuals sold and 81 bought
WEEKLY
back. The average was $4,761 and
the median was $2,500.
The sale-topper is out of the
unraced Avenue of Flags mare
Dear Lady, was bred by Betty
Mabee and Larry Mabee, consigned
by Green Acres Stables Inc.
(Jack & Barbara Hatch), Agent
for Lercari Thoroughbreds, and
purchased by Super Horse Inc.
The filly, from the family of the
grade I-winning millionaire Sand
Springs, was a $7,200 weanling
purchase from the 2007 Barretts
October Mixed Sale.

Sale-Topper Hip# 38 Dear Lady Ann
by Salt Lake out of Dear Lady sold for $37,000
mare Ms Hearts N Arrows, was bred in California by
Bud and Judy Johnston’s Old English Rancho and Sal
and Patsy Berumen, consigned by Old English Rancho
and purchased for $25,000 by Sierra Sunset LLC.
Two yearlings sold for $20,000. One was a colt by
Lost Soldier, out of the stakes winner End Sweep’s Girl,
Wednesday, April 16, 2008
bred in Kentucky by John Crook, consigned by Green
Acre Stables, Agent, and purchased for $20,000 by
Sierra Sunset LLC. The colt was a
$7,000 purchase at this year’s
Keeneland January Horses of All
Ages Sale.
The other $20,000 purchase
was a Cal-bred filly by High Brite,
out of graded stakes-placed Dream
Mary, bred and consigned by
Harris Farms Inc. and purchased
for $20,000 by Clay Fritz and
Partners.
Last year’s sale-topper was a colt
by Siberian Summer, out of the
Hansel mare La Charita, who was
consigned by Green Acre Stables,
Agent for breeder Lercari
Thoroughbreds, and purchased for
$40,000 by Richard Franco.

Snow Drop
$50,000 West Mesa Handicap
Snowdrop
Draws Off In West Mesa
On August 24, the five-year-old California-bred
mare Snowdrop pulled away in the stretch
to win the $50,000 West Mesa Handicap at
Albuquerque.
Snowdrop is by Beau Genius, out of the winning
Half a Year mare Sioux River, was bred by David and
Mary Ann Sawyer, is owned by Double Eagle Ranch
and Garth McCloud and trained by Bennie Woolley.
Sold for $23,000 at the Barretts Summer Sale of
Horses of Racing Age/Two-Year-Olds in Training, she now has five wins in 25 starts, earnings
of $212,840 and was coming off a second in the June 22 Dr. O.G. Fischer Memorial
Handicap at SunRay Park. She ran the seven furlongs in 1:23.49 and won by 3 1/2 lengths
at odds of 2-1. Fellow Cal-bred Topper’s Movin’ was second.

El Sinaloense, a British Columbian-bred
son of the California sire

won the $52,650 New
Westminster Stakes for two-yearolds
at Hastings Race Course in
Canada on August 24.
El Sinaloense won by 5 1/2
lengths at odds of 1-10 and ran the
6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.37 on a sloppy
track. He has earnings of $31,780
from a 5-4-1-0 record.
Friends, fans and supporters of Seabiscuit are invited to tour Ridgewood Ranch, the home and final resting place of the horse
racing legend, in Willits on Saturday, October 11, and to show their support for Glen Ellen Vocational Academy (GEVA), an
equine retirement foundation operated by Pam Berg in nearby Sonoma County. The event is sponsored by the Seabiscuit Heritage
Foundation and Willits Chamber of Commerce.
Berg and a handful of volunteers are rescuing and providing care for injured and retired Thoroughbreds so that they may recover
and return to riding soundness, just as Seabiscuit once did under his trainer Tom Smith. Tom Smith's nephew, James Watkins, along
with his wife, Lucy, are avid supporters of GEVA and help provide sponsorships for individual retired horses. GEVA was founded to
provide homes for injured, retired, and abused horses, or horses just in need of a home.
Representing the Seabiscuit Heritage Foundation will be Jacqueline Cooper, owner and breeder of American Legend Horse Farm
which is working to preserve the Seabiscuit bloodline at Ridgewood and the President of the foundation Tracy Livingston. Seabiscuit
Heritage Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization formed to promote the cultural legacy of the Ridgewood Ranch through
historic preservation, environmental conservation and public education.
End Run
August 29, 1997
On August 29, 1997, the four-year-old gelding End Run, a California-bred son of
Ultimate Pleasure, won the $62,525 Warden Stakes at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club,
with Creepshow (Fr) second and Yuste (Fr) finishing third in a field of seven. End Run
was trained by Mike Machowsky and ridden by Chris McCarron. He ran the 1 3/8 miles
in 2:16 2/5 on a firm turf course and won by four lengths at odds of 4-1.
End Run was the fifth and final foal out of the two-time winner Another Cute One.
The Warden was End Run’s fifth win in 18 starts. He was also third in the 1996 California
Cup Starter Handicap and finished his career with five wins in 19 starts and earnings of
$190,278. He was bred by Arthur and Larry Risdon, foaled at The Anvil Ranch in
Solvang and owned by For The Boys Stable and Rocarek.
