Six Elected To<br />

<strong>California</strong> Hall Of Fame<br />

The <strong>California</strong>-bred trio of Gummo, Iron Reward and Melair, along<br />

with Cecilia deMille Harper, Kjell Qvale and Dr. Jack Robbins DVM, have<br />

all been elected to the <strong>California</strong> Hall of Fame by the Board of Directors of<br />

the <strong>California</strong> <strong>Thoroughbred</strong> <strong>Breeders</strong> Association (CTBA) and will be<br />

inducted during the association’s Awards Dinner<br />

and Annual Meeting to be held at The Balboa<br />

Bay Club & Resort in Newport Beach on Tuesday,<br />

Feb. 17, 2009.<br />

Multiple stakes winner Gummo was the leading<br />

sire in <strong>California</strong> on six occasions (1974, 1975,<br />

1978 to 1980, and 1985), Iron Reward was the<br />

dam of 1955 Kentucky Derby winner and 1956<br />

Horse of the Year, Cal-bred Swaps, and unbeaten<br />

multiple graded stakes winner Melair was both the<br />

<strong>California</strong> Champion Three-Year-Old Female and<br />

Sprinter of 1986. Cecilia deMille Harper became<br />

the first female President of the CTBA in 1963,<br />

Kjell Qvale owned both the legendary Cal-bred<br />

Silky Sullivan and 1984 <strong>California</strong> Horse of the<br />

Year Silveyville, while his homebred Tribesman won this year’s <strong>California</strong><br />

Cup Sprint Handicap, and Jack Robbins has been a CTBA member since<br />

John Henry, Majestic Prince and the legendary Cal-bred duo of Ancient<br />

Lady Railrider Hits The Heights<br />

Lady Railrider rallied on the turn to take command<br />

and win the $75,000 Pacific Heights Stakes for<br />

<strong>California</strong>-bred fillies and mares at Golden Gate<br />

Fields on <strong>December</strong> 6.<br />

A three-year-old daughter of Ride the Rails, out of<br />

the two-time winner Lady Evergreen, she was bred by<br />

her owners Mr. and Mrs. Larry Williams, foaled at<br />

Pegasus Ranch and is trained by Steven Specht.<br />

Lady Railrider has four wins in 12 starts, earnings of<br />

$134,700 and was coming off a Nov. 9 allowance win.<br />

She ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.82 and won by two<br />

lengths at odds of 5-2.<br />

CTBA Stallion Season Auction<br />

January 6<br />

The annual <strong>California</strong> <strong>Thoroughbred</strong> <strong>Breeders</strong><br />

Association (CTBA) Stallion Season Auction will be<br />

held on Tuesday, January 6, from 6 to 8 p.m.<br />

Proceeds from the auction, which features seasons<br />

for many of the state’s top sires, will benefit the CTBA’s<br />

Political Action Committee (PAC) Fund, which works<br />

in support of legislation that favorably impacts<br />

<strong>Thoroughbred</strong> breeders in <strong>California</strong>.<br />

Highland Games Takes Mills<br />

A determined Highland Games got up in time to win the $50,000 Hank<br />

Mills Sr. Handicap at Turf Paradise in Arizona on <strong>December</strong> 6.<br />

By Game Plan (E.A. Ranches), out of the winner Evergreen Beauty, the<br />

five-year-old <strong>California</strong>-bred gelding was bred by Terry Brooks and<br />

McMurry TB Services, and is owned by Sandra Hall Trust and trained by<br />

Lyman Rollins.<br />

The $80,000 Barretts purchase has seven wins in 23 starts, earnings of<br />

$129,546 and ran the mile in 1:35.02, winning by half a length at odds of 6-1.<br />

Sunshine Millions Noms Due <strong>December</strong> 11<br />

The Early Bird Nominations for the $3.6 million Sunshine Millions VII<br />

day are due on Thursday, <strong>December</strong> 11.<br />

The Sunshine Millions is an eight-race event to be held on Saturday,<br />

January 24, 2009, at Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park. The races are<br />

restricted to registered <strong>California</strong>-breds and Florida-breds. Early Bird<br />

Nominations are $<strong>10</strong>0 per entry.<br />

Regular nominations, due January <strong>10</strong>, are $1,000 per entry. Pre entries will<br />

be due on January 14, with the post position draw set for January 19.<br />

Quasimodo To Stand At West 12<br />

Quasimodo, a six-year old son of A. P. Indy, has been retired from racing<br />

and will stand the 2009 breeding season at West 12 Ranch in Lodi.<br />

He is A.P. Indy's most successful son to stand on the West Coast, with<br />

purse winnings close to a $250,000 in 30 starts.<br />

Quasimodo's sire strength is bolstered with a strong turf female family<br />

and the brilliant L’Attrayante as second dam.<br />

Out of a grade III winner Miss Lenora, by Theatrical (Ire), he is also a<br />

half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Stylish.<br />

Quasimodo stands for $2,000 live foal. He won on dirt and turf. Quiet<br />

American mares will be given incentive consideration.<br />

Vilzak<br />

On <strong>December</strong> 13, 1987, Vilzak, a four-year-old son of Green Dancer, won the grade I, $500,000 Hollywood<br />

Turf Cup at Hollywood Park, with Forlitano (Arg) second and Political Ambition finishing third in a field of<br />

14. Vilzak was trained by Jack Van Berg and ridden by Pat Day. He ran the 1 1/2 miles on turf in 2:27 and won<br />

by a neck at odds of 14-1. Vilzak was the fourth of nine foals out of the productive graded stakes<br />

winner Zippy Do, who also foaled two-time grade I winner Some Romance, dual graded stakes winner Jane’s<br />

Dilemma, multiple stakes winner Casey’s Romance and stakes winners Mint Cooler. The Hollywood Turf Cup<br />

was Vilzak’s third win in 28 starts. He also won a stakes race in France and placed in sixth other stakes races<br />

in France and the United States, finishing his career with three wins in 30 starts and earnings of $602,232.<br />

CTBA Magazine Update<br />

The <strong>December</strong> <strong>2008</strong>issue of <strong>California</strong> <strong>Thoroughbred</strong>, the official publication<br />
