A dagger (†) indicates a stallion has been retired, an asterisk ( * ) that he has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere, a number sign (#) that he did not stand in California in 2007 but stood in the state in 2008, a double dagger (‡) that
he did not stand in California in 2008 but will stand in the state in 2009 and in bold that he is a freshman sire. In all cases, the sire will remain in the rankings until the year after his last California foals are two-year-olds. Statistics cover racing
in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and the United Arab Emirates only.
CTBA Magazine Update
The December 2008issue of California Thoroughbred, the official publication
of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA), has now been
completed and is currently being mailed out to both its subscribers and the CTBA
membership. Featured as this edition’s cover story is a detailed editorial on
California’s current leading sire Unusual Heat, the Old English Rancho resident
who is poised to eclipse the annual earnings record of $5,597,979 established by
Cee’s Tizzy eight years ago.
Besides this article, the latest magazine also includes many other feature stories
of interest, such as: a wrap-up of the 25th renewal of the $25.5 million Breeders’
Cup World Championships that were held for the first time on an all-weather
surface, on the Pro-Ride at Santa Anita Park on October 24-25; a CTBA
Member Profile on Don Engel, who will celebrate his 50th year as a member of
the association in 2009; a farm feature on West 12 Ranch, Matt and Barbara
Butterworth’s impressive 40-acre, full-service Thoroughbred facility in the
Northern California city of Lodi located between Sacramento and Stockton; a
review of the 2008Barretts October Mixed Sale that was held at Fairplex in
Pomona on October 27-28; a preview of those stallions who will be making
California their new home for next year’s breeding season, whether they be
retiring to stud or have been relocated to the Golden State; a Focus On The
Future piece spotlighting Jordyn Brand, a 23-year-old native of Fallbrook who
is gaining equine experience from California to Europe, Australia and Dubai as
a current member of the Darley Flying Start program; a wrap-up of the Living
Legends race held at Santa Anita on October 18, during this year’s 40th Oak
Tree Racing Association meet, which featured eight retired Hall of Fame jockeys
competing in an allowance optional claiming event for California-breds; our
annual Equine Gift Guide, highlighting those horse-related books that will
make the perfect presents for the holiday season; a Horse Care article dealing
with the subject matter of “Ulcers In Horses”; a historical review of the Cat’s
Cradle Handicap, a 7 1/2-furlong event for Cal-bred fillies and mares threeyears-old
an up that will enjoy its 12th renewal at Hollywood Park on
December 20; and all the many other interesting and informative features,
departments and columns that our loyal readers look forward to every month.
So now is the time to secure valuable advertising space in the January 2009
