Andrew Smith—President CGA W ith the cherry season coming to an end, we have seen yet another rollercoaster ride for many growers. The effects of rain and price pressure on products in the market place have left some growers questioning the benefits of cherry growing. Cherries re- main a labour of love, but it’s the dream of growing that “perfect” cherry that continually drives growers to per- sist with their quest to farm these ruby red gems. Over the course of the season we have seen the highs and the lows of cherry production. These effects have been more regional based rather than last year’s climatic events which were Australia wide and continued from the start to the finish of cherry production. Over the season we have seen the promotions program roll out with our cherry ambassador Jessica Watson on board. The CHERISH THE MOMENT slogan and the new creative artwork for in-store displays along with the con- sumer website appear to have been well received, with plenty of positive promotion to encourage consumers to buy cherries. I’m sure all these activities will form the building block for promotions in future campaigns. Well done to the CGA Marketing Committee for developing and implementing these initiatives. During this past season we have had a number of key R&D projects under way, these projects are extremely important to the industry, as the outcomes will shape the direction of industry into the future. We all are ea- gerly awaiting the findings on the current R&D topics when their full reports become available. Market access still looms as one of the hardest nuts to crack. This subject is a highly volatile creature with many intricacies. We continue to work hard to open new mar- kets with commercial protocols for all cherry growers to service. The CGA`s Market Access workshop that will be run on the 27th of February will form a major part of our export road map to further our export options, protocols and R&D needs in this area. We are hoping this type of workshop will help to give a heads up on things we require to address so that we can be in the forefront of future developments. It will be good to be pro-active instead of re-active in this area. We look forward to working with key stakeholders on this matter. This coming year will see many key issues that the CGA Board will have to deal with over market access. There are many items on the table for discussion as we speak, and the board is very determined to resolve these matters for the best possible outcome for all the Australian Indus- try. I must extend the Board’s thanks to Simon on his first year in the role of CEO of the CGA. Simon has stepped in and taken over all the day to day operations of CGA, as well as attending to projects, meetings and telecon- ferences on our behalf. Only twelve months in and he has already left his mark. I know when I say this I speak for all concerned ”well done Simon”. I must also thank FGT after their first year of CGA`s ad- ministration. Over the past twelve months, Sally Tennant has done a great job in setting up all our admin and our own newsletter. Thank you Sally! On Sally’s re- tirement, Nick Featherstone has taken over the role and we look forward to working with Nick. In closing, we look forward to the Industry meetings in the coming weeks. It will be a busy time for those committee reps involved and I thank them for giving up their valuable time to the industry. It is the grower reps that form the strength and direction of our industry, and for that they must be encouraged and commended. Last of all, don`t forget the two Grower Conferences that are on the calendar in the coming months. The Vic- torian VCA conference in early March and the Tasma- nian FGT May conference both have great programs, so don`t miss out on the opportunity to catch up with the latest trends and techniques.
