Minutes, Regular Meeting
November 4, 1971
~.
On November 4, 1971, a regular session of Texas Spokes
was held. The roll was read and corrected. No minutes were
read because no one was available to take them last time.
Jimmy Edrington, our treasurer, reported that we now
have $1,046 in the treasury minus our bills. Dotty Cortemeglia
suggested we declare dividends.
Virginia Gibbons said our XMAS party would cost around
$480 with setups and buffet provided. Tracor will cut the
cost by $.30 per person if we provide our set ups. The party
will be held on Wednesday December 15. The Appleby kid created
some noise. It was deicided we would provide the set-ups thus
cutting the price down.
Please donlt park in front -- It blocks the customers.
The Settlement Club sent the CluJ;? a Thank You card thanking
us for the rally we put on in their behalf, so said Martha
Damon.
Mike Lucas wanted. to know what to do with the trailer.
He's got it in front of his house.
Latest on the Rules Committee--- Larry Appleby will present
three alternatives on our rules at the next meeting.
He stated type of tires are the biggest factor but weill discuss
it in detail later.
David Stamman has a chart showing all the events for the
past year and the winners in each. This will provide a means
of determining the classes for the new rules and the cars pertaining
to each.
The next gynkhana will be held at Tracor on Nov. 21.
Martha Damon apologized for not having the trophies, but
they haven't come in yet.
A protest was filed at the HillClimb and Del stated the
protest committee had upheld it. Phil Gerrow and other members
filed a counter-protest which he read to the members
present. Del then stated that the original protest had received
full consideration and that this counter protest was
invalid. The rules make it illegal to file a counter-protest
and therefore it was denied. Del then ended the discussion
and considered the subject dropped and forgotten. We then
adjourned for movies.
EDITOR I SCORNER
Here we are again a f t.er a month I s lapse. Our Fall Hill
Climb got off to a good start and was a complete success.
There sure were a lot of entries.
A protest was filed against member Phil Gerrow which the
protest committee approved and member Gerrow and some other
members counter-protested the protest. Well how far do you
go with the rules of the game? You can't please everyone in
anything that is done. You can only come close to satisfying
all concerned. Although member Gerrow's protest was not
directed 'at anyone in particular, he did say the protest was
made in order to make the members realize that we're getting
bogged down in rules and regulations. We are slowly choking
the fun out of our events by knit-picking around the rules
and looking for faults of any kind. The old events which were
fu~l of fun are beginning to disappear. He is correct but
I'd like to say that whenever you have competition existing,
rules must be followed in order to distiriguish between the
serious competitor and.the "would be" competitor. Our events
are getting larger and the competition is increasing. This
alone demands the necessity of strict rules and regulations
that not only exist, but are made available to all competitors.
I have found through past experience that arguments and
conflicts arise not simply because a rule was violated, but
because knowledge of the rule was lacking on the part of either
side. To a certain extent our club's arguments have arisen
from a lack of communication and complete understanding of
the rules and guidelines centering around each event. If
everyone concerned participated in each event knowing all that
needs to be known about the event, then arguments would diminish
considerably. But this is a tall order and very hard to comply
with. I guess we'll just have to keep trying. Incidentally,
copies of our rules are in this issue. I suggest everyone read
and study them carefully.
Tonight we'll vote and adopt the new rules for classifying
all entries. There are three proposals and they're all pretty
good. It's going to be tough trying to decide. I guess the only
way to decide is to choose the one that might make it easier
for you to win in a class. I know this is what I'll be looking
for.
Our open-door policy on stories of any kind that someone
Wants to publish still exists. Just contact me and give a copy
of the article and I'll see that it gets placed in the following
issue of the Rattle. SEE YOU NEXT MONTH~
