Middle/High School<br />

Needs <strong>and</strong> Wants<br />

Objectives:<br />

• The students will underst<strong>and</strong> the effect that the ecosystem has on<br />

the economics of a region.<br />

• The students will compare <strong>and</strong> contrast the different regions of the<br />

United States <strong>and</strong> their lifestyles <strong>and</strong> economics.<br />

• Students will underst<strong>and</strong> how needs <strong>and</strong> wants of people in<br />

different regions vary.<br />

• The students will present their findings to the class.<br />

Materials: Needs <strong>and</strong>s Wants h<strong>and</strong>outs <strong>and</strong> cards, pencils or pens<br />

Instructions:<br />

1. Have students get into groups <strong>and</strong> give each group a needs <strong>and</strong><br />

wants card <strong>and</strong> list.<br />

2. Have students come up with the needs <strong>and</strong> wants for someone<br />

living in that region.<br />

3. Have each group read their list <strong>and</strong> it is up to the other groups to<br />

decide where they are from.<br />

4. Discuss the different regions of the United States <strong>and</strong> some of the<br />

states in these regions.<br />

5. Discuss each areas eco-system <strong>and</strong> discuss how the weather in each<br />

of the regions varies.<br />

6. Discuss how not only the region, yet other personal factors help to<br />

shape what things are needs <strong>and</strong> wants. Also discuss how needs<br />

<strong>and</strong> wants are different for everyone.<br />

Closure: As a class discuss the different regions, how the eco-system affects the regions,<br />

<strong>and</strong> how the people of the regions are affected by the ecosystem. Also discuss<br />

how the needs <strong>and</strong> wants of people in different parts of the country vary due to<br />

the eco-system. One region’s needs are another’s wants <strong>and</strong> so on.
