Every year, child care professionals are required
to obtain a specified number of professional
development hours to meet licensing or
certification requirements, and we all know
this, right? But, do you ever stop and think
about the types of professional development
opportunities you are participating in? Do you
ever question the types of opportunities you are
attending and how they might be helpful to you
in your work? Professional development is purely
a personal choice, and the types of opportunities you
participate in are purely your choice as well. There are
many ways to obtain professional development and
there is not a “one size fits all” answer as to the types
of opportunities you can participate in. In addition to
workshops and higher education, here are a few more
suggestions to increase your professional growth:
• Subscribe to professional development
blogs: One of the greatest challenges to our own
development is our lack of understanding how
we want to develop. What questions should you
ask? What do you value that affects the choices
you make? What resources should you pursue for
professional growth? There are several blogs that
get to the heart of these questions (and also help us
realize that personal and professional growth often
go hand-in-hand).
• Build your network outside of the place where
you work: Do not solely focus on your field, or even
your profession. Look at your interests and values
for connecting with people who can lead you to
new ideas, resources, and opportunities. Consider
joining a committee, professional organization,
or volunteering for other events outside of your
normal work duties.
• Seek inexpensive professional development
resources: Of course, nothing beats professional
development opportunities that are free, but paying
a small fee for webinars or conferences will help
you gain new and fresh knowledge and skills.
Search on the internet for professional development
opportunities as there are many low-cost ways to
strengthen your skill set.
We have also included some great articles about
professional development in this edition of the Bulletin
to help you continue on your own path to growth. Be
sure to read more about the importance of professional
development and how one regional partnership is
working hard to build “great expectations for teachers,
children, and families” in Southern Arizona.
Have a safe, fun, and healthy summer!
Sincerely,
Michelle
ideas, recursos y oportunidades. Considere unirse a
obtener conocimientos y habilidades nuevas y frescas.
Sinceramente,
CCR&R NEWS YOU CAN USE
On behalf of Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R), we would like to extend our appreciation for your
hard work and for the crucial role you play in providing quality care for Arizona’s children.
Child care providers throughout Arizona were honored in May when Arizona Governor Brewer issued a
proclamation acknowledging May 10, 2013 as Child Care Provider Appreciation Day. This official recognition
affirms that the commitment of our child care providers is worthy of the highest respect.
With nearly 12 million children under age five spending almost 40 hours in child care each week, it is not
surprising that child care programs play an important role in many children’s growth and development.
Research has shown that the first five years of life are crucial in a child’s emotional and intellectual
development. As an early child care professional, you make a difference in their lives.
As a service to providers, CCR&R sends monthly email blasts to all providers listed in our data base who
have given permission to receive emails. These emails briefly explain CCR&R services, resources, and how
we can be of assistance to you. If you are not currently on our email list and would like to receive these
monthly updates, please contact the CCR&R Program Director, Michelle Saint Hilarie, at (520) 320-4038 or
msainthilarie@cfraz.org.
As an early care and education professional, you touch the lives of children and families throughout our
state. CCR&R would like to share the following “Ten Ways” article from the “I Make a Difference” campaign to
recognize a few of the many ways that you make a difference daily.
10 Ways I Make a Difference for Young Children
As an educated early childhood teacher, I make a difference by …
1. Delivering high-quality early care and education to ensure all children are ready for
school and life.
2. Helping all children to gain the early language and literacy skills to prepare them for
reading.
3. Modeling respectful, nurturing relationships to help all children learn to work and
play well with others.
4. Promoting cognitive development by posing questions and providing
developmentally appropriate materials and activities that stimulate children’s
interest in pondering ideas, posing theories, formulating thoughts, growing skills
to support persistence and attentiveness to solving a problem and
experimenting with materials.
5. Providing rich learning environments that promote children wanting to learn new
things every day.
6. Supporting children’s understanding of key mathematical concepts.
7. Creating skill development opportunities that support children’s physi¬cal health and
growth, including large and fine motor development and eye-hand coordination,
healthy nutrition and children’s awareness of personal health and fitness.
8. Partnering with all families around their children’s development.
9. Allowing parents to work and supporting families’ contributions to our economy.
10. Continuing my education to ensure I know the latest research and have the resources
needed to be an effective teacher.
The Importance of Professional
Development
By Mary Dixon Lebeau
What makes a professional stand apart from others in his
or her field? Of course, she has the educational chops and
the hands-on experience that makes her well-rounded and
widely respected in her field. But true professionals don’t stop
there. In fact, they never stop – especially when it comes to
learning. After all, research is always discovering new things,
and trends are always changing. Any good professional will
be on top of – and responding to – these changes.
In the field of early childhood education, continuing your
professional development is even more important. “To me,
there is no excuse for an early childhood teacher not getting
regular continuing education,” says Brenda Nixon, M.A.,
author of Parenting Power in the Early Years.
Nixon says instructors and teachers need to be proactive
in their own continuing education – with or without the
support of their center director, principal or district. “Saying
the center won’t pay for (professional development) is no
excuse,” she says. “You just get lazy, and the children will
suffer.”
Fortunately, many employers will support and encourage
the development of their professional staff. After all, when
parents are seeking preschool instruction, they will seek out
the centers and schools which are on the top of their game
and well-aware of the latest research and developments.
“There is so much research going on uncovering the way
children learn,” Nixon points out. “It’s important for caregivers
to stay on top of these developments.” Early childhood
educators have to be accountable for and knowledgeable in
the changes in caregiving practices and techniques. Those
that do will find the knowledge profitable, not only in the
classroom, but also on the bottom line in terms of enrollment.
Back to Basics
Since the minimum requirements for early childhood
instructors vary from state to state, it may be difficult to
pinpoint the type of development best suited for your role
in the classroom. Some basics, though, are easily identified.
For example, all classroom teachers should be certified in
first aid. Regular review and renewal of the procedures and
practices will help you feel confident to handle any classroom
crisis.
All states have requirements concerning training for the
recognition and reporting of child abuse, neglect and
endangerment. Teachers should review these standards
annually, as they are important points of first contact in these
critical areas.
Every year, many school days are lost to communicable
diseases, such as the flu or the common cold. “All teachers need
to know how to prevent the spread of infectious diseases,”
says Nixon. If classes aren’t offered by your center, encourage
the director to contact the local health department. Often a
nurse or other medical professional will come to the center
after hours to train the staff in this and other health-related
areas.
…And Beyond
Many early childhood caregivers believe continuing
development is, frankly, a waste of time. “I’ve been caring for
children for more than ten years,” they may say. “I know all
there is to know.” But, like in any other professional field, you
need regular professional development and education if you
want to stay fresh and excited about your chosen field. After
all, if you’re feeling stale and routine, it will be difficult to
engage a room full of toddlers on a daily basis.
One of the greatest benefits of professional development is
the opportunity to get together with other early childhood
caregivers and share “war stories.” “I’ve seen caregivers
get together at conferences and share stories, swap ideas,
brainstorm and help each other out. The informal learning
experience is extremely beneficial,” says Nixon, adding, “They
need to know they’re not alone.”
Learning more about your field will also reduce the stress
you feel in a classroom setting. Reviewing what is normal
and what’s not in early childhood behavior will reassure
you when dilemmas occur in your own classroom. “A regular
review is essential,” says Nixon. “Many teachers are right
out of school and haven’t had a lot of hands-on experience.
Others have been at it for ten to fifteen years. It’s time to
open the windows and refresh their minds.”
Other benefits you’ll reap from continuing education and
professional development include:
• Learning all about the latest trends in education and
discipline
• Receiving instruction on how to implement new practices
and procedures in a classroom. After all, you can read about
procedures on a web site, but you may need help when it
comes to how to actually put it into action.
• Feeling professional. Often early childcare educators
are underpaid and feel unappreciated. Investing in their
education shows them they’re doing important work.
• Staying on top of the industry and the learning curve.
It’s your responsibility to continue to grow and develop as an
early childhood professional – with or without your director’s
support. Just like any other professional, you’ll want to
continue growing and learning in your field. It will make you
more effective as an educator – and more marketable if you
decide to transfer schools or go on to other positions within
your own.
Best of all, continuing your education and professional
development will make you feel more confident in your
career choice and more positive about the rigors of early
childhood education. And when you’re relaxed, confident
and positive in the classroom, the children win – and so do
you!
La Importancia del Desarrollo
Profesional
Parenting Power in the Early Years.
Afortunadamente, muchos empleadores apoyan y fomentan
He visto cuidadores
otro profesional, usted deberá continuar aprendiendo y
creciendo en su campo profesional. Lo hará más eficaz como
educador – y más comercial si decide transferirse a otras
escuelas o a otra posición.
WE HAVE GREAT EXPECTATIONS FOR
TEACHERS, CHILDREN, AND FAMILIES
By: Naomi Karp | Director, Early Childhood Professional Development | United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona
John Wooden was the magical basketball coach
at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
His teams won ten national basketball championships
in 12 years! Coach Wooden always made his players
practice hard and always told them, “Failing to prepare
is preparing to fail.”
Those words are true for more than basketball.
They are particularly true in early childhood education.
Research tells us that many communities in the United
States are failing to prepare well-educated early
childhood teachers. Many states do not require people
who teach and care for young children to go to school
to build their teaching skills. They do not require all
teachers to learn how to help young children come to
kindergarten prepared to succeed. As a result, large
numbers of young children are not in high quality early
learning environments. They are
being prepared to fail when they
enter kindergarten.
In Tucson, the United
Way of Tucson and Southern
Arizona is working to build a
new early childhood professional
development system. With
funding from all five First Things
First Regional Partnership
Councils in Pima County, we
have created 10 Communities
of Practice. Each one of them is
helping to build a high quality system for teaching early
childhood teachers to be the best that they can be. We
call our new system-building work “Great Expectations
for Teachers, Children, and Families.”
The 10 Communities of Practice focus on
building a system based on:
Improving the quality of infant and toddler care
Creating high quality inclusive classrooms
Raising the quality in early childhood classrooms
Creating pathways from Associates’ degrees to
Bachelors’ degrees
Building teachers’ skills in instructional support
Creating high quality family child care homes
Increasing teachers’ knowledge of developmentally
appropriate practice
Improving tribal children’s transitions from preschool
to kindergarten
Increasing the number of University of Arizona students
who complete education degrees
Building a new professional development system
"We want to see the day
when it is the expectation
that all early childhood
teachers, who so choose,
will have the opportunities
and resources needed to
graduate from college."
All 10 Communities of Practice are based on
developmentally appropriate practice, which is a sign
of a high quality classroom. They also have these things
in common: 1) There is at least one Coordinator who
designs and schedules classes; 2) Each one has about
20-25 members, and the members are called cohorts;
3) All cohorts learn about the Arizona Early Learning
Standards and how to use them in their classrooms; 4)
They also learn about systems building and coaching to
improve their problem solving and teaching skills; and
5) They learn about how children learn and develop
higher level thinking skills.
We never talk about “trainings.” We only talk
about education opportunities. In early childhood
professional development, the word “training” usually
means a short workshop that is taken one time, and the
knowledge that might be gained
is not very deep. Thus, long-term
positive effects may not exist
and benefits probably are small.
The biggest problem is that most
trainings do not lead to a degree.
For those reasons, we
only talk about education
opportunities. The ones that we
provide for our Communities
of Practice members are
developmental, which means
that knowledge about a topic
keeps expanding by offering many opportunities to
put the knowledge into practice during the class and
in the teachers’ classrooms. We also make sure that
education opportunities are sequential. In other words,
learning new ideas and skills starts at the simplest level
and works upward to very complex ways of looking
at the same topic or topics. Learning is designed for
individuals’ interests and time commitments.
We are trying to build a culture that respects
and supports education for all. We want to see the
day when it is the expectation that all early childhood
teachers, who so choose, will have the opportunities
and resources needed to graduate from college. To
start this process, all of the Communities of Practice will
offer a college credit option when Year 2 begins on July
1, 2013. Classes for college credit are typically held at
Pima College. Some scholarships are available through
the Pathways Program.
Our funder, First Things First, requires that
we bring national early childhood experts to Tucson
www.azchildcare.org 8 1-800-308-9000

to deepen and enrich the education opportunities that
we provide for our Communities of Practice members.
The sessions that the experts present always focus on
a certain topic, and each session is then designed for
different audiences.
For example, Hedda Sharapan, who worked with
Mr. Rogers for 36 years, came to Tucson and talked
to three different groups about Science, Technology,
Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) and
how those content areas relate to early language and
literacy. First Hedda met with 40 Quality First coaches.
She taught them several experiments and activities to
use in the classrooms of the teachers they coach. Later
that day she talked about the same topic with people
in Tucson who design programs for children. Later that
evening she met with 30 cohort members who are part of
our grant. They learned new STEAM experiments to use
in their classrooms. The next day she went to the Tohono
O’odham Nation and spoke to tribal Head Start teachers
about STEAM. So, we took one topic and provided a series
of classes for different audiences who learned the same
concepts at different levels. That is one reason why we
talk about education opportunities and why we don’t talk
about trainings.
foundations of learning that these children need to
be successful in school and in life. In the spring of
2014, a new law, Move on When Reading, goes into
effect. This law requires that all third graders will
take a reading test. Those children who are reading
well below third grade level will be kept in third
grade.
Well prepared early childhood teachers will
be the firewall, or the strategy for making sure that
when today’s youngest children reach third grade,
they will be prepared to pass this reading test, have
lots of friends, and be successful in school and in life.
We have great expectations that this work
will build a system that supports learning and school
success.
We usually have 6 to 8 national experts during a
grant year. All of the sessions are free, and they are given
at different times so that we can reach people who have
different work schedules. Some of the sessions are given
in Spanish, especially those that focus on family child
care providers.
By now you might be wondering how you might
participate in a Community of Practice. We are busy
planning for a kick-off event for as many early childhood
teachers and college students as we can reach. On July
15th, United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona will
be hosting a “find out about us” evening at 330 North
Commerce Park Loop, in the Sentinel Building. The event
will begin at 6:00 and end at 8:00 PM. There will be no
charge.
If you attend, there will be door prizes, delicious
food, and an opportunity to find out details about each
Community of Practice. The Coordinators will be there
and members of the different Communities of Practice
will be there to answer your questions.
The goal of our work is to provide early childhood
teachers with a variety of high quality education
opportunities. These will be the driving force and the
foundation for a new early childhood professional
development system. We want to break the cycle of failing
to prepare early childhood teachers who will also fail to
prepare young children to be successful in kindergarten
and beyond.
It is essential that Arizona’s young children have
well prepared teachers who know how to build the
United Way of Tucson
Southern Arizona
TENEMOS GRANDES EXPECTATIVAS
infantil a temprana edad.
Pima, First Things First, se han
Y hemos llamado a nuestro nuevo

Nuestro fundador, First Things First, requiere
mismo concepto a diferentes niveles.
When Reading.
