BAR YOCHAI
Kabbalists throughout history agree that a human being cannot overcome the force of negativity alone, without the teachings and knowledge of
the Zohar and the technology of Kabbalah. Why is it that when we know that something is bad for us, we still engage in it? Why is it that when
we know something is good for us, we abstain or procrastinate? Why do we forego positive actions in favor of negative ones nine times out of
ten? The reason, according to Kabbalah, is that we constantly battle an opponent in the Game of Life. This opponent is called Satan. It ignites
all of our reactive negative thoughts and actions. For 5,000 years, it has been beating us at this game that hovers on the narrow edge of life
and death, pain and suffering, good and evil. The kabbalistic insight as to why our opponent has been so successful is that Satan convinces
humankind that Satan does not even exist. Through the Light of the Zohar, Satan is exposed and once we know who the opponent really is, we
have a chance of beating it. The Zohar not only exposes and identifies the real enemy, it also gives us the power to overtake and defeat him.
It is incumbent upon us to connect to the seed and origin of the Zohar itself—its author, Rav Shimon bar Yochai. And so each Shabbat we sing
the song of Bar Yochai to make this vital connection.
The Cave of Rock is a reference to the Cave in Peki’in Israel where Rav Shimon hid for thirteen years and was visited by righteous souls who
taught Rav Shimon the secrets of Kabbalah. This line is therefore a connection to the souls of Moses and Elijah.
Acacia Wood, the strongest wood that exists, was used to build the two columns in the Holy Temple. These two columns represent Netzach
and Hod of the Tree of Life. Netzach and Hod draw their energy from Tiferet which is represented by the Tetragrammaton which also appears
in this verse. In short, Acacia wood connects us to the Holy Temple which connects us to prophecy.
Bar Yochai, you came to a field of apples to gather potions. The secret of Torah
is like buds and blossoms; “Let us create man” was stated with you in mind.
Field of Apples is a code name for Malchut when Malchut is connected to Tiferet (Zeir Anpin). This is why it is said that Eve (Malchut) came
up to the chest (Tiferet) of Adam in height. Tiferet is the point of connection between the Light and Vessel. Field is also a codeword for the
level of Malchut (One Percent) and Apples refers to the Three Column System (three colors of an apple – red skin, white fruit, green leaves).
Bar Yochai, to the place of marble stones, you arrived with lion’s face.
Marble stones are a code word for the Stone Tablets of the Ten Utterances (Commandments) which they themselves are an encoded
reference to the Ten Levels of Energy known as the Sefirot or the Tree of Life.
Lion’s face is a reference to one of the four Holy Animals: The Lion specifically corresponds to the Sefirah of Chesed.
