<strong>the</strong> permutation <strong>of</strong> vowels, usually <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> final vowel <strong>of</strong> a word,<br />

<strong>and</strong> sometimes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> medial, but never <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> initial. For<br />

this purpose <strong>the</strong> low or broad vowels are exchanged for<br />

<strong>the</strong> high or sharp ones, in this order, u, o, a, a, e, i. The<br />

vowel u in this case belongs to <strong>the</strong> vulgar tongue, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n<br />

we have a scale <strong>of</strong> ascending respect according to <strong>the</strong> quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> person addressed, ending in i as a climax. The verb<br />

to sit is an example, for it may be used in four different<br />

forms, lunguh, lungah, langah, <strong>and</strong> linggih. The following<br />
