the places you go
Welcome to Fairfield Faces & Places.
This is your magazine. It’s about the people
you meet and the places you go as an owner
with Fairfield Resorts. It’s a way for you to
share your stories…and make the most of
one another’s experiences.
Two existing owner newsletters have
been combined to create Faces & Places.
Adventures, presented by FairShare Plus, and
Resort Times, distributed by participating
Property Owners Associations (POAs), are now
one quarterly publication. Because your magazine
contains important personalized information
on the inside back cover, you’ll be receiving
a magazine for each POA you belong to.
(Share the extras with a friend!) However, for
production efficiencies, owners with four or
more contracts will get one magazine with
personalized inserts.
We welcome your comments and suggestions. You
can mail them to my attention at
the address below, or e-mail them to
your first issue!
shore set the stage, followed by dinner and a comedy show
at a private island.Together with friends, they also spent a
lazy afternoon aboard Fairfield’s Serenity Yacht.Yet as comfortable
as they were at sea, they were equally at home on
land. On the suggestion of the resort concierge, Lynne, Dale
and friends rented Harley Davidson motorcycles
for a refreshingly different perspective
on the destination. They set off for Key
West with the wind in their hair, helmet
and gear in tow. (Parasailing is at the top of
their list for next time.)
Las Olas Boulevard, renowned for its
boutique shops, fine art galleries and gourmet
cuisine, gave James and Martha Coyne a
bit of “color” during their stay in this sundrenched
As do most Fairfield owners, James and Dotty Warrick
did a little research before arriving in the beach town, reading
travel magazines and surfing the Internet to see what was
new and different in the area — the Queen Mary II,for
instance. James and Dotty witnessed the ship’s first visit to the
U.S. In fact, Fort Lauderdale will now be
home port to the Queen Mary II, the world’s
largest and most expensive passenger ship.
But there was more than just a glimpse of
the maiden voyage on their itinerary.
“We go with the flow,” says James.“We
love Fort Lauderdale, but we also use it as a
base for Palm Beach, Miami and Key West.”
And so they did, for a basketball game — the
Miami Heat vs. the Houston Rockets (the
town. Says Martha,“Last fall, a
gallery along Las Olas featured a national
The Warricks like to go with the
flow in Fort Lauderdale.
Heat won!). Speaking of sports, James and
Martha Coyne also took in a game in Miami,
exhibit on Vatican art. My daughter had trouble getting in to
see it in Houston, but I had no trouble at all in Fort
Lauderdale!” Of course, you won’t want to miss dining at
one of the many sidewalk cafes, savoring the best that life has
to offer along Las Olas.
at the Orange Bowl. It was East Carolina University vs. the
University of Miami. (And Miami does it again!)
“There are lots of things to do in Fort Lauderdale,” says
Naomi Bagley. Besides seeing the Queen Mary II up close
check those out! Was pleased to
see Bentley Brook! My family
pleased to see the addition of
Bentley Brook in last year’s
booked our dates.We had a
great time and would
recommend a stay at Bentley
and spending time in the hot
enjoy an exhilarating day of skiing. Night skiing, snowboarding
and cross-country skiing are also available.
During the warmer months, you can enjoy hiking and
mountain biking right on property. For kids, there’s
laser skeet shooting, fishing in the stocked trout pond
and the Alpine Slide. Adults will appreciate the beauty
of the Berkshire Hills, the area’s 15 golf courses, whitewater
rafting, canoeing, kayaking and other outdoor
and personal with husband Robert, she got a bird’s eye view
of the lighthouse at the Hillsboro inlet — an especially
“enlightening” experience for a lighthouse enthusiast. Robert
had penciled in large sail fishing, but their busy schedule just
didn’t allow for it (there’s always next year!).
The Priggs’ schedule was also very full, with trips to The
Festival, a grand market with fresh seafood and herbs, as well
as designer shoes, imported home furnishings and even hot
dogs.“It was multinational. You could get Israeli and Indian
spices, and just about anything you want. You can’t do this
everywhere!” says Sandra. As husband Dave is a gourmet
cook, this proved especially delicious, with home-cooked
meals virtually every night in their condo.Walks on the
beach, several rounds of golf and countless hours by the pool
accompanied trips to The Festival.
Without a doubt, Fort Lauderdale renews the spirit with
new adventures and lazy days by the Atlantic. The warm temperatures
easily allow for that, as do the natural setting and
resorts’ amenities. Remarks James Coyne,“In the wintertime,
you just can’t beat the weather” — which averages a balmy
77 degrees. “It wasn’t hot or insufferable,” adds Martha.“The
weather was beautiful!”
And, unlike many other beach resort towns, Fort
Lauderdale is not overwhelmed with tourists and beach-
as compared to other beaches.” Dale Dommel concurs,
“For an area that’s so populated, it just doesn’t seem so
cramped for us.”
Fort Lauderdale is a perennial favorite among Fairfield
owners. Comments like,“We keep saying we’re going to go
elsewhere, but we keep ending up in Fort Lauderdale,” and
Do you crave beautiful 70
in the wind and light breezes blowing through your window?
Or a fun-filled family vacation in the great outdoors? As
FairShare Plus VIP members, Chet and Marjorie Stephenson
get both as they travel around the country with their family
and friends. With six weeks of vacation time every year,
Chet, 69, and Marjorie, 66, have the opportunity to build
their getaways around their shared passion for golf.
Chet, a retired banker, bought his first Fairfield property
at the Glade in 1983 because it fulfilled his two desires: a stable
company and pleasant accommodations not far from his
Ohio home. After retirement, Chet and Marjorie expanded
their Fairfield experience by organizing golfing trips with
friends and other couples to resorts in the
Cumberlands, the Smoky Mountains and
Florida. When Marjorie hurt her back a
few years ago and couldn’t golf as much,
the couple began to explore some of
the other options Fairfield has to
offer.“The great thing about
by gifting vacation time.
Part Of The
Fairfield Family
LaShunda Davenport often
receives praise from Fairfield owners
for her terrific efforts at
resolving their issues.
“I think one of LaShunda’s strongest attributes is her
follow-through,” says Kim Thompson,Vice President of Title
& Deeding.“She tries her best to help customers even
when it is outside of her area of responsibility, and follows
up until the task is completed.”
With her strong work ethic and values, it isn’t difficult
to see why LaShunda has become such a valued member
of the Fairfield family. She started her career with Fairfield
in 1998 at Fairfield’s Little Rock headquarters. When plans
were announced to relocate the Little Rock office to
Orlando, LaShunda felt as if part of her family was leaving
as well. She decided to transfer to Orlando, where she was
instrumental in staff training and office development for
her department.
LaShunda continued to excel into 2002, when she was
assigned the company’s new St.Thomas properties and
developed the current owner database for St.Thomas. A
year later, she was promoted to Title Coordinator due to
her strong customer service and leadership skills.
“LaShunda’s willingness to consistently go above and
beyond makes her a leader among her peers and an invaluable
resource to our owners,” Kim says.
forward to continuing to grow with the company.” d
vacation ownership
Timeshare Owners Vacation More,Take Longer Trips
Evidence suggests that the great American vacation is
shrinking. A recent poll by a major online travel company
reveals that Americans took 10 percent less vacation time in
2003 than in 2002, and one in five felt guilty for taking a
vacation from work. However, one segment of the population
has found a way around the shrinking American vacation
— timeshare owners.
A study of 844 U.S. timeshare owners and non-owners
was conducted between September and October 2003 by
Ragatz Associates, the leading market research firm in the
vacation ownership industry. The study revealed that 93 percent
of timeshare owners in the United States have taken at
least one pleasure trip during the past year involving one or
more nights away from home, compared with 77 percent of
non-owners. In addition, 53 percent of U.S. timeshare owners
reported taking at least one pleasure trip during the past
year involving seven or more nights away from home, compared
with only 43 percent of non-timeshare owners.
U.S. timeshare owners also report using more of their
available vacation time. They use, on average, 17.3 days of
paid vacation per year (84 percent) compared with only
14.3 days for non-timeshare owners (77 percent). In addition,
timeshare owners are more satisfied with their use of
paid vacation time. Sixty-five percent reported being very
satisfied with the amount of time they will use compared to
56 percent of non-owners.
“These findings suggest that U.S. timeshare owners take
more vacations, and longer vacations,” said Steve Miner,
director of research, Ragatz Associates. Miner speculated
that one reason timeshare owners take longer vacations is
the fact that they have already paid for their vacation
accommodations.“Additionally, timeshare owners who
belong to an exchange company are always encouraged to
begin planning their next vacation, encouraging regular use
of their vacation time,” Miner said.
