Fairfield Fort Lauderdale Summer, sand,<br />

sun and fun are just a few of the things waiting<br />

for you in sunny Fort Lauderdale. Take-A-Kid-<br />

Fishin’ Rodeo, held June 5 in Davie, is one of<br />

many area festivities. This event provides fishing,<br />

fun and competition for children ages 5-12. •<br />

The Mango Festival, a celebration of music and<br />

multiculturalism, features live entertainment<br />

food, vendors and a parade in Deerfield Beach<br />

on June 19 and 20. • Round up the gang and<br />

head to The Fourth Along the Coast Celebration<br />

on July 4. Arrive early and enjoy a day full of<br />

activities on South Beach, near Las Olas<br />

Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale. You<br />

can also join the celebration with other resort<br />

guests as they gather on the beach and watch the<br />

fireworks set off at the local pier. • On August<br />

15, enjoy the Hollywood Beach Latin Festival at<br />

the Broadwalk featuring Latin foods, live entertainment,<br />

and arts and crafts. Then, from August<br />

27-29, “chowder down” at the Hollywood Beach<br />

Clambake! Experience New England-style food<br />

and live jazz and blues at this all-American celebration.<br />

• The area also features a variety of festivals<br />

throughout the summer. Hollywood Beach<br />

sponsors Broadwalk Friday Fest the 2nd and 4th<br />

Fridays from 7-10 p.m. Take your pick in downtown<br />

Fort Lauderdale — Bank of America<br />

FIESTA! Fort Lauderdale every 4th Sunday from<br />

11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Las Olas Riverfront, or<br />

SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch on the 1st Sunday<br />

from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Riverwalk. So kick<br />

back and relax, or take off and enjoy the festivities<br />

— you decide how to best enjoy beautiful<br />

Fairfield Washington, D.C. For something<br />

completely different, check out the seasonal<br />

return of Lantern Tours at Gadsby’s Tavern<br />

Museum. This Friday night event focuses on<br />

tavern life in the 18th century. Plan your<br />

evening to include dinner at one of Old Town<br />

Salute America during “The Road to Independence,” a<br />

two-day event held July 3-4 at Yorktown Victory Center.<br />

Alexandria’s fine restaurants and a stroll along the<br />

Potomac River. • From June 18-20, the annual<br />

Alexandria Red Cross Waterfront Festival features<br />

live music, living history exhibits, tall ship tours,<br />

children’s events, arts and crafts and concessions.<br />

• On July 4, you won’t want to miss these 228th<br />

Independence Day celebrations. The Red, White<br />

& Blue Concert is an all-day event at George<br />

Washington’s Mount Vernon home with music<br />

by the National Concert Band of America and an<br />

18th-century style celebration. Also, there will<br />

be fireworks on the National Mall in the<br />

nation’s capital, one of D.C.’s most famous<br />

events. • July 23-25 brings the 31st Annual<br />

Virginia Scottish Games. Celebrate your<br />

Tryon Palace Historic Sites & Gardens in New Bern is an<br />

ongoing celebration of North Carolina’s Colonial history.<br />

Scottish heritage with games, dancing, food, bagpipes<br />

and the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans (Blessing of<br />

the Tartans) church service. • Tavern Day at<br />

Gadsby’s Museum is August 1. Experience a day<br />

of tavern life with displays and programs. • The<br />

Annual Friendship Firehouse Festival is August 7.<br />

This is Old Town’s historic firehouse with<br />

antique fire-fighting equipment, crafts, live music<br />

and children’s activities.<br />

Fairfield Williamsburg This summer you’ll be<br />

inspired by the powerful history of our<br />

country. Colonial Williamsburg rings in the<br />

Fourth of July with a reading of the Declaration<br />

of Independence, a salute to the 13 colonies and<br />

fireworks at 9:15 p.m. (Discounted admission<br />

tickets are available at the Activities Office.)<br />

Watch costumed interpreters reenact daily<br />

activities from the 18th century. Or choose to<br />

celebrate in Yorktown, where independence was<br />

won. Enjoy arts and crafts shows, classic car<br />

show, parade, children’s game area and musical<br />

entertainment with a spectacular fireworks show<br />

over the York River. • Each Thursday, join the<br />

resort’s guided bus tour of Washington, D.C.<br />

Full-sized, professional coaches take you on a day<br />

tour of the most beautiful and inspiring sights in<br />

our nation’s capital, without the hassles of driving<br />

and parking yourself. (Call the Activities Office<br />

spot.) This year marks the grand opening of<br />

President’s Park, in which 18-foot sculpted busts<br />

of 42 U.S. presidents are presented in a relaxed<br />

garden setting. • Beginning June 15 and running<br />

throughout the summer, the Music<br />

Theatre Entertainers will present their<br />

Summer Production, an enthusiastic tribute to<br />

America’s musical heritage. Join them for a<br />

rockin’ evening of family fun jam-packed with<br />

familiar songs. • Enjoy jazz and light opera<br />

favorites at the 8th Annual Opera in the<br />

Vineyards on June 19. Tour the winery and sample<br />

wines at the connoisseur wine tasting. • The<br />

Virginia Shakespeare Festival presents three<br />

shows in repertory from July 9 to August 8 —<br />

“Long Day's Journey into Night” by Eugene<br />

O’Neill and Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Part 1”<br />

and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”<br />

Bring a lawn chair or a blanket to downtown Asheville most<br />

Saturday nights this summer for Shindig on the Green.<br />

Fairfield Harbour This summer you can expect<br />

the Harbour’s two golf courses to be in pristine<br />

condition for your play. Early tee times are<br />

reserved for owners and guests; just call the pro<br />

shops (252-638-5338 for Harbour Pointe, 252-<br />

514-0050 for Shoreline) to book your time. • If<br />

you’re a history buff, Tryon Palace awaits you.<br />

Guides in period dress show you around and tell<br />

the story of New Bern’s early years and the role it<br />

played in the Civil War. There are many historic<br />

homes within walking distance. Enjoy beautiful<br />

gardens open free of charge on July 4, a reading<br />

of the Declaration of Independence on the Palace<br />

Streets and fireworks later in the evening. Several<br />

concerts, including the North Carolina<br />

Symphony, will take place on the south lawn<br />

through early July. Monthly garden lectures and<br />

African-American walking tours are also offered<br />

the 3rd Sunday of each month throughout the<br />

summer. • The National Cemetery in New Bern<br />

is one of the oldest Civil War cemeteries and is<br />

also the final resting place of the inventor and<br />
