Crynodeb Nad yw’n Dechnegol
Gwnaethpwyd arolygiad o ardal <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong> o dan nawdd Menter Ucheldiroedd
gymorthedig y Comisiwn Brenhinol ar Henebion Hanesyddol Cymru (RCAHMW) rhwng Ebrill 2008
a Mawrth 2009.
Oddeutu 38 cilomedr sgwâr oedd maint yr ardal arolygu ac roedd yn cwmpasu crib i’r Gogledd o
Ferthyr Tudful ac i’r Gorllewin o Grucywel, gyda Chronfa Pontsticill yn ffin iddi i’r Gorllewin a’r
B4560 yn darparu’r ffin Ddwyreiniol. I’r de gorweddai terfyn y Parc Cenedlaethol, Comin Merthyr
a’r A465 (T) rhwng Cendl a Merthyr Tudful.
Cafwyd 660 o safleoedd o ganlyniad i’r arolygiad, ac o’r rhain yr oedd 121 wedi’u cofnodi ar y
NMR a 320 ar yr HER. Roedd gan yr ardaloedd dyffrynnog ddwysedd uwch o safleoedd na’r
llethrau uwch. Roedd hyn oherwydd bod llawer mwy o graig yn brigo y medrid ei defnyddio er
mwyn codi adeiladweithiau. Gwelwyd gweithgarwch diwydiannol mynych ôl-ganoloesol a modern
o amgylch ymylon yr ardal arolygu, yn arbennig yng Ngogledd-ddwyrain a De-orllewin yr ardal.
Ni chafodd y pantiau o waith dyn a gafwyd yn aml iawn yn y llethrau marian eu cofnodi bob
amser, oherwydd iddynt gael eu hadeiladu’n ddiweddar iawn ac am fod cymaint ohonynt yn
gyffredinol. Nodweddion ôl-ganoloesol neu fodern oedd y rhain a grëwyd gan dynnu cerrig rhydd
a’u pentyrru o amgylch y pant. Fel rheol yr oeddent oddeutu 1.5 medr ar eu traws ac 1 fedr o
ddyfnder, er bod eu siâp a’u maint yn amrywio’n sylweddol. Fe’u ceid yn aml mewn grwpiau,
weithiau bob yn ddau, ond yn ddigon mynych yn dod i gymaint â deg neu bymtheg. Mae’n
ymddangos bod y pantiau hyn yn llochesau bach neu dyllau ymochel, sy’n gysylltiedig â
hyfforddiant milwrol. Golyga’r ffaith fod cymaint o’r nodweddion hyn yn bresennol ledled yr ardal
na chawsant mo’u cynnwys yn y gronfa ddata derfynol.
Yn gyffredinol cafwyd y cerrig brig ar y llethrau uwch, ac arddangoswyd argaeledd calchfaen ar
gyfer adeiladu a phrosesau diwydiannol gan yr odynau calch a’r chwareli yn yr ardal arolygu.
Yn ystod yr arolygiad ni lwyddwyd i ganfod rhai safleoedd a gofnodir yn yr HER lleol
(Ymddiriedolaeth Archeolegol Clwyd-Powys). Mewn rhai achosion, medrai hyn fod oherwydd bod
y cyfesurynnau yn anghywir. Mwy na thebyg y gellir priodoli methiannau eraill i ddod o hyd i
safleoedd i’r gorchudd trwchus o lystyfiant ar y llethrau is a’r ardaloedd eang o weunydd mawn a
chorsydd yn rhan ddeheuol yr ardal arolygu. Gallai’r tywydd fod yn ffactor yn ogystal, gydag eira
ysgafn yn cuddio rhai nodweddion o bryd i’w gilydd. Fodd bynnag, daethpwyd o hyd i lawer o
safleoedd newydd yn ogystal.
Yn gyffredinol, llwyddodd y prosiect yn y gwaith o greu cofnod cyflawn o’r adeiladweithiau
artiffisial o fewn yr ardal arolygu a chynhyrchu set o ddata a fydd yn cefnogi ymchwil yn y
dyfodol. Defnyddiwyd cryn dipyn ar GIS a bydd y trawsgrifiadau o’r ffotograffau o’r aer o’r
RCAHMW a’r data yn cyfrannu at brosiect sydd ar y gweill yn ArchaeoPhysica er mwyn datblygu
dulliau dadansoddol wedi’u seilio ar GIS o archwilio Ucheldiroedd Cymru.
UIP081
Produced for RCAHMW
Non-Technical Summary
Survey of <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong> area proceeded on the auspices of the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> on the
Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW) grant aided Uplands Initiative between
April 2008 and March 2009.
The survey area was roughly 38 square kilometres and covered a ridge north of Merthyr Tydfil
and west of Crickhowell, bounded by Pontisticill Reservoir to the west and the B4560 to the east.
To the south was the National Park boundary, Merthyr Common and the A465 (T) between
Beaufort and Merthyr Tydfil.
The survey resulted in 660 sites, of which 121 were recorded on the NMR and 320 on the HER.
The valley areas bore a higher density of sites than the upper slopes. This was because there
was far more outcropping rock which could be utlised to build structures. There was frequent
post-medieval and modern industrial activity around the edges of the survey area, particularly in
the north-east and south-west of the area. The very frequent occurrence of man-made hollows in
the scree slopes were not always recorded due to their very recent construction and overall
abundance. These were post-medieval or modern features created by removing loose stones and
piling around the depression. They were usually about 1.5 metres across and 1 metre deep,
though their shape and dimensions varied markedly. They were often found in groups,
sometimes in pairs, but not infrequently numbering as many as ten or fifteen. It seems that
these hollows are small shelters or foxholes associated with military training. The number of these
features all over the area meant that they have not been included in the final database.
The rock outcropping was generally on the higher slopes and the availability of limestone for
building and industrial processes was demonstrated by the lime kilns and quarries in the survey
area.
Some sites recorded in the local HER (the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust) could not be found
during survey. On occasions this could be because the co-ordinates were incorrect. Other failures
to locate sites are probably attributable to the dense vegetation cover on the lower slopes and the
large areas of peat bogs and marsh in the southern part of the survey area. Weather conditions
may have also been a factor, with light snowfall sometimes masking some features. However,
many new sites were also discovered.
Overall the project has been successful in making a total record of the artificial structures within
the survey area and producing a data set that will support future research. Extensive use has
been made of GIS and the air photo transcriptions from the RCAHMW and the data will contribute
to a developing project at ArchaeoPhysica to develop GIS-based analytical approaches to
examining Welsh Uplands.
Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW) on receipt of grant aid funding from the Welsh Assembly.
1.3 Fieldwork used a team of up to five people drawn from Anne & Martin Roseveare, Graham
Britton, Neil Paveley and Graham Arnold. Database design and GIS support was by Martin
Roseveare and data entry was by Graham Arnold. GIS-based analysis was by Martin Roseveare.
1.4 Acknowledgements are due to the RCAHMW for support during the project, CPAT for supply
Basic methodology & rationale
1.5 The Uplands Initiative projects are field reconnaissance exercises contributing to an increased
understanding of the archaeological content of the Welsh upland regions.
1.6 A GIS system was prepared in advance, incorporating current mapping (OS Landline), a
digital elevation model (OS Landline Profile), desktop assessment results and known sites from
the NMR, HER and the RCAHMW air photo mapping project.
1.7 Transects were walked at between 30m and 50m intervals depending upon local visibility and
accessibility. Sites are recorded using a standard written format and hand-held GPS units. Checks
are made in the field against those sites already known, including RCAHMW air photo mapping.
Constraints & variations
1.8 The start of the main fieldwork was in December 2008 and finished in March 2008. Heavy
snow and frequent fog halted the survey. The unexpected discovery of a very high density of
hollows in the rock outcrops, attributed to the military as shelters or foxholes and industrial
quarries caused the survey to be conducted in two in order to catch up on entering the escalating
amount of data on to the database.
1.9 With one or two exceptions the entire area was walked with a mean line separation of
between 30m and 50m as required by the specification. The exceptions to this were for reasons
of safety on extremely steep slopes. Where this was the case, a visual assessment from the top
and bottom of the slope and from adjacent accessible slopes was made. In most, if not all cases,
the very steepness of these slopes would preclude significant past human activity.
2.2 From experience of working in the higher mountains of Wales, non-OS historic mapping has
not been consulted due to difficulties in determining the location of depicted features on the
ground. This is because the precision of the original mapping is obviously unknown but also the
lack of landmarks makes attempts to georeference the material to modern mapping at best
inaccurate. This in turn leads to uncertainty in the field, avoided by simply mapping all artificial
structures during fieldwork.
Assessment and compilation
2.4 The NMR data for the survey area contained 121 records, of which twenty are Scheduled
Ancient Monuments. A high proportion of the NMR records in some areas were recently updated
by Uplands survey or similar fieldwork, with good location information and descriptions, but were
monuments unknown as yet to the HER.
2.5 The HER data contained 320 records within or immediately adjacent to the survey area. The
description field in the HER was truncated for some entries due to the export format used by
CPAT.
2.6 It was sometimes not possible to locate sites on the HER record. This could be because, as
has been found previously, multiple records in the HER are in fact the same monument –
transcribed from various epochs of early OS mapping with slightly different positions. From
discussion at the Uplands Forum February 2007 it was apparent this is a known occurrence (Bob
Sylvester, pers. comm.). Some failures to locate sites could be explained by changes in conditions
such as vegetation cover.
2.7 In several cases HER records were found to be vague, occasionally wrong or incorrectly
located; those by Palmer and Jones have in particular been found to warrant care in their use,
quite often due to their failure to adequately differentiate between nearby monuments.
2.8 The 1st – 3rd Epoch OS maps were assimilated into the project GIS as georeferenced images,
then all monuments, sites and former tracks & boundaries transferred to the initial sites record
ahead of fieldwork. Where features existed on more than one epoch of mapping, the latestmapped
position of the feature was taken.
HER data
2.9 The HER data for this area proved to be of abnormally low quality for a variety of reasons.
One major issue that emerged late in the project is that the quality of the position stated in many
of the records is open to question and this appears to have resulted in successive episodes of
fieldwork appending to the record rather than updating content. As a result, it has proved
extremely difficult and occasionally impossible to be sure exactly which HER record applies to any
given monument or locality in the field.
2.10 Second, having battled through this, it has become evident that some previous episodes of
fieldwork have resulted in very different quality records. While this is inevitable in an
accumulating record, the situation becomes grave when the same monument is comprehensively
but differently described in each record. This extends beyond the description to monument type
classifications and hence the process of matching HER records to Uplands fieldwork records has
proved an abnormally long-winded and convoluted affair.
2.11 The number of records in the database with form stated as ‘documents’ is proportionally
larger than usual; to avoid their loss any that appear to be describing a locatable monument have
been included. The certainty of them being associated with their stated position is, however, low.
Field survey
Dates & personnel
2.12 Fieldwork ran from February 2008 through to the beginning of March 2009. A number of
days were partly or completely lost due to adverse weather conditions.
2.13 The entire personnel were drawn from ArchaeoPhysica Ltd. Within each team there was a
nominated First Aider and a mixture of people with varying experience. Graham Arnold oversaw
health and safety and was responsible for data collection and collation procedures.
Equipment
2.14 Each field team carried cameras and GPS units and each walker had a waterproof notebook
and a laminated booklet of templates to guide recording. Detailed maps depicting known sites
and all landscape details were carried.
2.15 Individuals provided their own appropriate clothing. High visibility vests/jackets were worn
and mountain safety gear and first aid kit were spread amongst the team members.
Technique
2.16 The vast majority of the survey area was unenclosed heath and subsequently the open
mountainside was surveyed according to the topography, e.g., a side of a valley at a time.
Coverage was monitored daily and no significant omissions were found. In areas of open
grassland and peat bogs, traverses were up to 50m apart if there was sufficiently clear visibility.
2.17 Through previous experience it was known to be necessary to work with the landscape at
all times to avoid undue exertion. For this reason fieldwork usually worked along the contours
wherever possible, starting at the base of slopes and working uphill until about midday and then
returning downhill in the next swathe of country. In the low lying areas of thick marsh and peat
bogs care was taken to ensure that they were passable safely.
2.18 For safety reasons the fording of streams was avoided wherever possible, these being used
to bound survey areas instead.
2.19 There were no reportable or non-reportable injuries or near miss incidents.
Records
2.20 The overall rationale behind the formation of the record was to ensure the basic
information was captured efficiently in the field, whilst allowing checking of previously known
sites. As for previous surveys the emphasis was on the collection of a total record regardless of
whether a monument had been previously described.
2.21 Record sheets carry the identity of the author and the date of survey to enable auditing,
along with GPS unit ID and way-mark number as well as the recorded co-ordinates.
2.22 Record fields such as ‘Broad Class’, ‘Form’, ‘Condition’ and ‘Land Use’ were completed from
lists of permitted field contents to minimise the chance of ambiguous records, using a template. A
sketch of the monument was required where complex or unusual shapes or layouts existed. This
was usually the case within quarry sites and composite sheepfolds.
2.23 In general one photograph was taken of each site, the exceptions being where more than
one view of a site was felt necessary or where multiple sites appear on photographs. Occasionally
poor light and other conditions prevented a photograph from being taken. Photographs were not
always included in the case of the modern hollows dug into the scree slopes or modern quarries
that had recently gone out of use.
2.24 Monuments within complexes were allocated ad hoc between team members with internal
specialisms brought to bear. Larger complexes were recorded within specific field campaigns to
avoid accidental omissions or duplicates.
2.25 Find spot locations were checked for possible further remains although the precision of
these meant that any further finds were likely to be accidental. No further finds were found at any
of the given locations.
Archive considerations
2.26 The result of the field campaign is a set of waterproof notebooks. These are the original
records, each record in which carries a unique ‘EN’ number.
2.27 These records contain occasional sketches of sites, and therefore include more information
in some cases than can be conveyed in the written record. However, they also represent the
original primary record whereas the digital record contains corrected, augmented and updated
data and therefore has precedence.
2.28 In addition, there is a photographic archive in digital form and the NMR-compatible flat
database required by the RCAHMW specification. Additional photographs showing general
landscape views are contained in our archive.
Data collation & analysis
2.29 The basic digital record was built in stages as the survey proceeded, permitting errors and
queries to be caught in good time and reviews or repeat visits made where required.
2.30 In each batch of data entry all records were given a unique ‘EN’ number as a temporary
analogy to the NPRN to enable auditing. Each record was checked for omissions and obvious
errors before being passed for initial data entry into the database.
GIS formation
2.31 To aid fieldwork planning and logistics in detail the database content was available as a live
layer in the project GIS throughout survey. All monuments already recorded within the NMR, the
local HER, the AP mapping and those available from the desktop study were also available as GIS
layers and the whole superimposed upon topographic mapping (OS Landline) and an elevation
model (OS Landform Profile). To this was added access information, e.g., CRoW access/nonaccess
land, negotiated access and other restrictions.
2.32 In addition, a full virtual landscape was formed by draping detailed colour aerial
photography onto the digital topographic model and overlaying this with streams, monument
locations etc. The GIS then permitted ‘fly-throughs’ to be performed with considerable logistical
and practical benefit.
2.33 The area covered was recorded each day within another layer. With this it was possible to
correlate the rate of coverage with the density of monuments and the type of terrain and hence
predict fairly accurately how much ground could be surveyed from one day to the next. It also
allowed for the planning of escape routes and identification of hazardous areas during the
allocation of survey blocks.
2.34 For all records altitude data was transferred automatically into the record from a surface
generated from OS Landform Profile data.
2.35 Where NMR or HER sites were records of multiple related monuments, the relevant parts of
the information were combined with individual site records. The NMR record was often used as
the “parent” record for a complex, with “child” records being formed from information from field
survey and the other sources.
Limiting factors
2.36 The visibility of low-lying monuments in peat country is severely limited by the presence of
the peat itself and by the dense heather growth topping it in most places. The slopes of the
survey area suffered thick heather growth. An additional complication with this survey was several
falls of snow during the fieldwork.
2.37 The improved fields within the survey area have associated clearance cairns and piles of
dumped stone. However, some of these may conceal earlier sites, such as prehistoric funerary
monuments.
2.38 Many of the hilltop cairns have had shelters built on them, masking the form of the earlier
monument.
2.39 The Brecon Beacons are the scene of current military training. Evidence of this (in the form
of shelters and hollows) was found during the survey. Personnel and ammunition may therefore
have damaged and obscured earlier monuments. Sites that were obviously very recently made
were omitted from the final database due to the sheer number, specifically on the eastern side of
<strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong>, close to the B4650 where training was frequently taking place during the
Physical landscape
Landscape form
3.1 The survey area includes two ridges aligned roughly east-west. <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong> to the east
and Cefn yr Ystrad to the west. The bulk of the area is formed from a mass of Carboniferous
limestone topped with a small amount of Millstone Grit and the whole bedded upon Old Red
Sandstone.
Soils and vegetation
3.2 The area is characterised by slowly permeable wet very acid upland soils with a peaty surface.
The vegetation is moorland and heath with rough grazing and a little forestry. Valley bottoms
tend to have dense carpets of old heather punctuated by areas of open stony ground, some of it
evidently till deposits.
3.3 The lower slopes of the survey area have thick bracken cover which gives way to heather and
then short, unimproved grassland on the tops. There were rocky outcrops around the tops of
<strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong>. There were some improved fields in the northwestern corner of the survey
area, close to Pontsticill reservoir which were pasture. There was also some woodland around the
borders of the area.
Hydrology
3.4 The streams that flow down the northeastern slope of the survey area feed into the Dyffryn
Crawnon in the valley bottom. The slopes towards the south of the area, below <strong>Mynydd</strong>
<strong>Llangynidr</strong> and Cefn yr Ystrad are particularly wet. Upon the plateaux there were areas of peat
and standing water, but at the time of survey they were not impassable. The Pontsticill Reservoir
is adjacent to the western boundary of the survey area and smaller reservoirs are located in the
southwestern and southeastern corners of the survey area.
3.5 The limestone areas are densely populated with sinkholes of variable size and a number of
caves are known within this material (the Chartists’ Cave being a famous example).
4 Field Survey
Introduction
Use of GIS
4.1 At the analysis stage of the project GIS has been used to automate several labour-intensive
tasks and to provide a powerful platform for spatial analysis. The data preparation tasks for which
GIS was used include:
• Matching of surveyed monuments with existing NMR & HER records by location, including
morphing of HER tables into NMR format
• Identification of monuments not found during survey by location
• Automated insertion of community and other regional details into the record
• Capture of height data from the OS DEM
• Automated extraction of OS features and map generation
• Generation of an environmental model to assist with the provision of landscape context
• Fusion of NMR, HER, survey, aerial photographic and OS-derived data for analysis
• Database management, NPRN enumeration and table linking, etc.
• Exploration of thematic landscape encoding to faciliate mathematical analysis of site location,
etc.
4.2 The thematic zoning is currently being developed and at the moment consists of the survey
area divided into 100m x 100m cells, each with an average height, slope, aspect and distance
from water. Vegetation cover is being added, based upon the fieldwork, as will be soil type.
Between these, there should be sufficient information to examine what relationships exist
between the presence or absence of monuments, their location and type and situation. Initial
observations suggest strong correlations do exist but whether they can be generalised and turned
into a reliable predictive model has not yet been examined.
4.3 In addition, all of the analyses described below were conducted within the GIS for simplicity
and to use the implicit spatial structure of the data to best advantage.
5 Discussion
Survey
Coverage
5.1 All the area originally allocated was covered. Coverage rates varied depending on terrain
which varied from pasture to steep rocky slopes and heather-topped peat. Poor weather on some
days also slowed progress as would be expected in this sort of environment.
5.2 The partly-eroded peat deposits and vegetation may have masked features. However, the
peat was sufficiently deep to be ancient in its own right and therefore has significant palaeoenvironmental
potential, especially in the southern part of the area (e.g. Pen March).
Significant discoveries
Land usage
5.3 The dominant current land use is sheep grazing, shooting and open heath land. There are
grouse on the mountain tops and shooting butts were frequently observed. Some of the lower
slopes of the open mountain side, particularly west of Cefn yr Ystrad had clearance cairns
indicating that the land was once improved and has since been abandoned. There were a handful
of improved fields and a small amount of woodland around the edges of in the survey area too.
Settlements
5.4 The most widespread settlement was recorded at the bottom of the slopes to the south of
<strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong> at SO 31400 16500 and SO 14800 16100, a sheltered valley above a large
stream, on the east and west sides of forestry. Another similar settlement was also recorded at
the source of the stream on the north-facing slope of Carn Caws It comprised several long
houses and huts and perhaps represents several periods of occupation, the earliest perhaps being
medieval.
5.5 Shepherd’s huts were usually found close to sheepfolds or enclosures, although some were
found in isolation. Huts were occasionally found within or adjacent to quarries as well, or close to
limekiln activity.
5.6 Prehistoric settlement included hut circles on the upper south-facing slope of Waun Rydd
valley, on the eastern side of a stream, though these were not the only examples. Prehistoric
occupation of the area was also indicated by the presence of cairns. Large cairns were located on
the summit of Carn Caws, <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong> and Cefn yr Ystrad and these are sufficiently large
to have been exploited later on as shelters, with hollows being dug into the centre. A similar
large and mutilated cairn was located on the ridge to the south of Cwm Nant-y-fedw at SO 20119
26071. Examples of low barrows were recorded on <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong> and Waun Rydd, with
some examples heavily overgrown and turfed over.
Quarrying
5.7 Areas of quarrying were recorded throughout the survey area and at all heights, but more so
towards the tops of the ridges, where natural limestone rock outcrops. The form of quarrying
was mostly scoops cut laterally into the outcrop, with subterranean quarrying absent in the survey
area. There were several disused modern quarries around the edges of the survey area,
demonstrating the industrial heritage of the area. Most quarries recorded were undateable, but
seem to relate to post-medieval activity. The larger complexes, sometimes a hundred metres
across, were often located close together to exploit a particular section of rock and were
accompanied by tracks and buildings. A good example of this is around Blaen Onneu at SO
15500 16800, where several widespread areas of quarrying occupy the same ridge, forming
prominent landscape features.
Tracks
5.8 The vast majority of the tracks found were fairly modern and provided access to the quarries.
Other tracks were caused by modern agricultural activity and walkers’ access to local attractions
such as the Chartist’s Cave at the centre of <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong>. These were not recorded as they
were usually too modern to warrant a specific record. Many tracks are heavily obscured by
vegetation and there were a variety of forms. Some were revetted with stone walling either
downslope or upslope, some were simple ledges cut into the hillside or embanked upon it, and
many were hollow ways. Of the latter many were faint depressions, but some were impressive
cuttings as at SO 19197 24939, where the trackway is roughly 2 metres deep and 3 metres wide
at the top of the hollow. A few tracks, particularly along the tops of the ridges, are still used by
walkers due to the views, and for the same reason may date back thousands of years. These
tracks are usually simple worn paths ranging for kilometres and are frequently marked with
cairns.
Sheepfolds
5.9 Sheepfolds were scattered throughout the area, varying markedly in size and shape. A
complex one including a 50 metre long central cell with four other cells inside was located at SO
09667 011984. The amount and quality of construction suggests it was once an element of a
centralised system of sheep management with perhaps several owners sharing the resource.
Recreational and clearance cairns
5.10 Most of the cairns recorded were associated with trackways, and probably date to the post
medieval period. Several of the summits in the area had piles of stones made by modern day
walkers. Recreational cairns were also found within defunct quarries where there was plentiful
waste material and around collapsed walls. The distribution of recreational cairns therefore
correlates with the distribution of natural or reusable material. The only clearance cairns found
during the survey were particularly large and near the improved fields in the south-western corner
of the study area, on the edge of Pontsticill reservoir. These clearance cairns probably date to
between the post-medieval period to modern day and may have been created mechanically. The
CPAT HER had many of these clearance cairns attributed to prehistoric activity in the area of
Waun Rydd valley.
Shooting butts
5.11 Shooting butts were most commonly found on the eastern side of <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong>, as
there is copious amounts of outcropping rock out of which to construct the butts. These varied in
form between simple hollows in the scree slopes, single curved walls and complete circles. They
face all directions, but usually with a good view of the heath.
The correlation of air photo transcriptions to sites
5.12 Elements that correlated well were quarries, some structures and most of the field
boundaries, some of these also correlating with field boundaries noted on 1st edition OS mapping.
The record was augmented by construction details and identification of further structural units.
More ephemeral features like possible cultivation or larger enclosures proved difficult to confirm
on the ground.
6 Narrative summary and upland research themes
Prehistoric
6.1 The earliest archaeological evidence in the survey area is attributed to the Bronze Age. There
were no sites recorded on the HER or found during the survey that related to the Mesolithic or the
Neolithic period.
6.2 The picture becomes a little clearer for the Bronze Age. There are 97 records for this period,
with possibly a further seventeen. These sites include barrows, cairns, hut circles, enclosures and
field boundaries. This is in contrast to the Iron Age, to which only six are attributed.
Upland prehistoric settlement from the Mesolithic period onwards, only visible through
artefact scatters around upland lakes
6.3 No upland lakes were found in the survey area, but there are three post-medieval or modern
reservoirs. No artefact scatters were recorded during the survey.
The identification of upland settlement remains from periods where they are poorly
represented, particularly the Bronze Age and Early Medieval periods
6.4 There is good potential for prehistoric settlement within the area covered by this survey
project as generally speaking the topography is not rugged and there is plenty of outcropping
rock with which to build structures without the need to quarry into the bedrock. There were very
few slopes in the area which were too steep or hazardous to negate settlement. Possible hut
circles and a circular enclosure were found on the southern slope of Waun Rydd valley, and
prehistoric cairns were found on both. Some of the sites seem to have been reused in the postmedieval
period to create sheepfolds and further enclosures, something that is prevalent in these
hills.
Prehistoric ritual landscapes and their relationships with contemporary settlement
6.5 The survey recorded a great number of cairns, but in many cases it was not possible to
determine their date for certain. The definite prehistoric cairns were found throughout the survey
area, including the summits of <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong>, Carn Caws and Clo Cadno and on the top of
Cefn yr Ystrad. Generally it does not seem that there is a particular correlation between the siting
of these cairns and the contemporary settlements. Cairns were generally on the summits of the
mountains, with a good view of the cairns on the uplands surrounding the site. Settlements were
located mostly in the sheltered valley areas with a good supply of water and more fertile land. An
exception could be the cairn at SO 12986 10787, which is located just north of a widespread
prehistoric settlement on the Waun Rydd valley. It has a number of small cairns on its west side
overlooking the Pontsticill reservoir and on its east side close to a well worn trackway orientated
northeast - southwest down the valley. The settlement appears to include several phases of
occupation, and it is not certain that the cairn is prehistoric.
6.6 The impression overall is that prehistoric settlement must have been widespread but
lightweight as there are few significant traces of field systems or settlement. It is possible that
the medieval and post medieval farmsteads occupied the same sites for purely geographical
reasons in which case only geophysical survey or excavation could recover traces of prehistoric
predecessors.
Medieval
6.7 There are thirty records for the medieval period. This is perhaps somewhat lower than it
should be, as it is frequently difficult to date sheepfolds, quarries and banks and it seems more
conservative to offer a post-medieval or unknown date. The sites that have been recorded as
medieval include platforms, settlements and field boundaries.
Upland deserted settlements, particularly those of potential medieval date with cognisance of
surrounding agricultural or storage features associated with the domestic buildings
6.8 A few upland deserted settlements or farmsteads were recorded during the project, for
instance the ruins located in the valley below <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong>. Often air photo evidence is the
first indicator of potential remains and usually identifies elements of the associated field system.
Otherwise, these sites are discovered during systematic field visits to sheepfolds, where attention
needs to be paid to incorporated remains of earlier structures.
The structure, components and phasing of field systems in upland areas with an eye to
possible early dating of some enclosures, and the presence of encroachment
6.9 There were many former boundary walls discovered which had collapsed into banks. They
were located on the north facing slopes of <strong>Mynydd</strong> <strong>Llangynidr</strong> and along the top of Carn Caws
and Clo Cadno but were often very heavily obscured by vegetation or weather conditions. They
are probably medieval or post-medieval. Early mapping can assist with dating post-medieval field
systems but has been found to be of little use for earlier features. Associating field systems with
date-specific structures and transport routes may be the only practical method of dating them.
Post medieval
6.10 There are 316 (plus a possible further twelve) records for the post medieval period,
comprising almost half the records for the project. The period witnessed a dramatic increase in
activity in the mountains as people of new skills and tools found gainful employment on the
slopes. There were still the shepherds with their huts, folds and dips, but the industrial revolution
signalled an improvement in quarrying techniques. Recreational shooting of course became
widespread in upland areas during the 1800s.
6.11 Most of the recorded sites were quarries and lime kilns, associated with spoil heaps and
some buildings. The majority of the limekilns were surface kilns, heavily overgrown with waste
heaps of burnt lime and charcoal material. There were some examples of well built stone pot
kilns, some freestanding mounds, others dug into steep slopes. The loose waste material also
inadvertently provided a material for walkers to construct recreational cairns out of.
6.12 The shooting butts varied in form between single rubble walls, to crescent shaped circles,
sometimes built out of older cairns.
6.13 Very frequently observed sites in the survey area were hollows constructed in the scree
slopes. It was clear that while most were roughly built holes probably associated with modern
military training, some were of far better construction and had far superior views of the open
mountainside. The latter were recorded as post medieval shooting butts, though of course, even
some of the freestanding butts could be modern in date.
The presence and extent of remains of rural industries in the uplands, particularly peat
cutting, quarrying, rabbit farming and mining
6.14 Quarrying for limestone to produce lime is the main industry present in the survey area and
was found throughout, though the extent of each quarry varied widely. Other quarries were found
to extract walling stone or other building materials in the later periods. There were a number of
modern disused quarries in the area surveyed, with partially tarmaced roads and access routes
that had been recently blocked off. Evidence of extensive quarrying was found along outcrops,
such as above the area of forestry between SO 14300, 16400 and 14800, 16900, with frequent
scalloping of the hillside. The topography sometimes made it difficult to distinguish between
natural scree and specific areas of industrial quarrying. There were numerous small scoops in the
slopes of most of the peaks and close to stone wall boundaries such as at SO 16468 13732 where
stone for the wall was quarried on-site.
6.15 Although a large percentage of the area surveyed was covered in peat of variable
thickness, no examples of peat-cutting activity were visible but deep peat was not particularly
common and didn’t exceed 1 metre deep in some places.
The form and distribution of extraction landscapes and the association of defined mining
areas and their mining features
6.16 There was no mining recorded in the area, but the style of quarrying varied greatly. Often
small individual scoops were recorded, particularly on the slopes west of Pen Cerrig-calch. It is
difficult to date these scoops, but they are likely to have been excavated for an extensive lime
producing industry in the post-medieval period. Occasionally they are located alongside boundary
walls and it is clear that their function was to provide walling material.
6.17 There are several major centres of stone extraction in the survey area dating to the modern
period, which have recently become disused. These may have had post-medieval origins,
including the ridge of Blaen Onneu, with a number of limekilns and smaller quarries in the vicinity.
On the western side of Merthyr Common below Cefn yr Ystrad, there is reference in the CPAT
HER 22147 to the ‘Baltic’ quarry which had signs of being extended and mechanised at a later
date. These quarries are large scale and include quarry buildings and waste heaps clearly part of
an organised industry and their locations on the outer edges of the Upland area suggests that
they were positioned for ease of access and transport along major tracks. Higher up the slopes, in
the more remote locations areas of small scale scoops into the natural stone outcrop might have
earlier origins. They are somewhat disorganised when compared to the clearly post-medieval
quarries and they could, for example, be medieval.
Modern
6.18 There were 49 modern sites recorded, mainly associated with recreational walkers’ cairns.
Modern shelters in the form of hollows in the scree slopes were often not recorded, due to their
abundance and frequently in dense clusters. Besides this there were multiple extensive quarries
on the eastern and western extremities of the survey area which had recently become disused.
There were also shelters and recreational cairns and a commemorative marker stone associated
with a Welsh Water filter house.
6.19 There are two air crash sites within the area, one, of Wellington bomber T2520 exists at SO
09050 13750 where it crashed on the 9 th December, 1940. The other, of a Vampire jet VV618
exists at SO 09450 09650 where it crashed on the 27 th October 1953.
Agri-Industrial settlement patterns in contexts where farming and industrial activity coalesce
6.20 Similarities in construction of some hearths and ovens inside domestic shepherds’ huts
were shared with some of the lime kilns. Some limekilns were also very close to domestic
settlement activity. This may suggest that small agricultural communities were involved in the
lime producing industry further up the slopes and that they may have produced some lime for use
within their own community.
The relationship of sites to woodland, where it exists and to identified deposits of peat and
areas of peat extraction or drainage
6.21 The only areas of woodland in the survey area were on the boundaries of the area.
6.22 The area of woodland was not associated with peat extraction in the area. Peat is
widespread on the top of the survey area, but no examples of peat cutting were found during the
survey.
Transport networks of all periods in relation to the upland areas and the inter-regional
implications of these, in particular extensive remains of upland trackways and early systems of
roads and tramways with their associated infrastructure
6.23 Most of the tracks in the survey area are difficult to date and were often still in use until
recently to access quarries or by modern walkers. However, due to the wear on some of the
tracks and the existence of a number of possible prehistoric cairns along the route, it is likely that
some of the tracks have been used over a long period of time and may date back as far as the
prehistoric period. Some of the quarry tracks could date to the medieval or post-medieval period,
but have been updated and maintained for more recent use.
6.24 Some tracks were probably established for accessing shooting butts, as these are a
common feature particularly on the eastern side of the area where there is copious outcropping
rock and easy access to the relatively flat areas. These might account for some of the more
ephemeral track.
6.25 The tracks and paths that run along the top of both ridges are likely to have been in use
since antiquity. Prehistoric cairns and mounds are located on the ridges and peaks, but the paths
are also denoted by marker cairns (which are probably of various dates). No boundary stones
marking track were located during the survey, with the abundance of loose limestone scree
probably making small cairns an easier way to mark the tracks.
7 Appendix 1
Environmental potential
7.1 The extent of pollen sampling already carried within the area is unknown at the time of the
survey. Pollen sampling could be worthwhile in the southern area of the site, particularly at SO
14500, 13750 and SO 08500 11500, where extensive peat bogs exist, up to at least 1m in depth.
Very little settlement activity was found in these areas. Beneath the peat in this area there is the
possibility of relict soils. A specialist would be needed to target further sampling most effectively.
Recommendations
Documentary resource & NMRW
7.2 Explore improved areas with geophysics to see what the potential would be to locate
ploughed-down monuments in these areas.
7.3 If the AP resource for these upland areas could be shared as geo-referenced images then
their inclusion in a GIS would be straightforward. The information contained (vegetation and
other surface details, not just archaeology) would benefit field survey.
Further study
7.4 There is potential for a combination of aerial photography and geophysical survey on
improved ground to inform upon the apparent loss of monuments. Traces of monuments invisible
to the eye at ground level may be visible from the air in certain conditions and geophysical survey
could reveal aspects that were never visible. It is generally supposed that sites, such as
prehistoric settlements, are potentially lost as ground is improved but the extent to which this
occurs is not known.
