PASSING T HE TEST
-letter word. Spelling tests,
driving tests, SATs, all bring a knot to the
stomach. Tests are something we would rather
forgo, but also something we must undergo.
Lent, too, is a four-letter word and is also a kind
of test, for the only way to Easter is to pass
through Lent.
Israel for its faith in the God who saves. No
persevere. This faith / test theme also appears in
the reading from Romans. Paul boldly asserts
that faith in Christ will see the believer through
any trial.
The Gospel passage makes it clear that even
Jesus was tested. It describes a test, a struggle
between good and evil, that dramatically
life in him. This power enables him to overcome
temptation. This power is with all of us who
celebrate the test of Lent, a power enabling us
to pass with flying colors.

Last fall, we made the difficult decision to reduce our
staff for both the parish and the school. We did this
to address the $120,000 budget deficit from the
previous fiscal year. Fortunately, we did not have to
borrow money from the bank and instead, we
borrowed it from our restricted funds. In addition,
we continued to pay close attention to all of our
expenses. Well, I have some good news to report.
Over the first half of our current fiscal year ending
this past December, we have a projected budget
surplus of $66,000.
As you can see from the details below, our income is
up and our expenses are down. Thank you for your
generosity. If we keep us this pace, we will be able to
eliminate a good portion of the $120,000 deficit. I
want to reiterate that while this is good news, these
are still projections. The deficit will remain until the
end of the fiscal year. At that point, we will be able to
determine officially how much we will be able to pay
back to the restricted funds.
In addition to this deficit, we also have a deficit with
our Preservation Fund. As you have seen, we have
done a lot of work on the Church the past few years.
With the additions and the regular maintenance of a
Church that is almost 100 years old, we have made
an important investment. The deficit for the
Preservation Fund is about $35,000. We have no
plans on any more major investments in the Church
until this deficit is gone.
Please keep on doing the wonderful work that you
do for our parish. In the end, we entrust all of this to
our Blessed Mother. She will always take care of us.

Lenten Meal /Stations of the Cross

Ministry Schedule

the next month, we will no longer publish the
weekly ministry schedule in the bulletin. If you
are not receiving e-mails or online and would

Note: The 7:30 and 9:00 Hospitality assignments
are not on the schedule at this time. We will be

Sharing and Caring Hands!
On Tuesday, February 19th, our
parish will prepare and serve a meal
to approximately 300 people at Sharing & Caring
Hands Shelter. The meal will include: a
hamburger & rice hot dish, buttered bread, cole
slaw, milk, cookies & bars.
Your help is needed in preparing the food the
night before, making bars & cookies, making the
meal the morning of, or delivering and serving
the meal. Bars & cookies may be dropped off at
the church basement Monday night between 6:30
and 8:00pm, or Tuesday morning between 8:00
and 10:00am.
We are also collecting new or gently used
outerwear (gloves/ mittens/scarves/ hats) for the
patrons at Sharing & Caring Hands. These items
may be dropped off in the labeled bin in the
church basement. Please call Chris Kunze at 763-
682-6360 to volunteer.

Unborn Baby Program
Parishioners will have the opportunity to
conceived this month. Not all newly conceived
babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than
4,000 babies lose their lives to abortion daily.

Council of Catholic Women Meeting
The next CCW general meeting is on
Monday, February 25th at 7:00pm
in the Parish Hall. We will be
praying the rosary prior to the
meeting at 6:30pm in the Parish
Hall. CCW understands that there is a great need
for food at the Buffalo Food Shelf. So when you
join us on Monday, February 25th, please bring a
donation for the food shelf. Refreshments will be
served at the meeting. If you have any questions

I went back to the old neighborhood a while ago and
realized there what everyone who has ever tried to go
home discovers. The trees have grown smaller and
easier for climbing, the alley where we played hideand-go-seek
has grown narrower, the trip to the
corner less daring, and all the old haunts so much less
intriguing. But going back also drew forth in me a
power I had not imagined or expected. Not only did it
reintroduce me to who I am, it renewed the dream of
Lent can be such a time of returning to our roots.
Some would see the season as penitential, a time of
reparation for sin; others as a time for growing more
prayerful or for reestablishing lives of service or for
deepening faith. And it can be all of that. Yet the
readings of this Lenten Sunday take us back to how it
once was and who was once doing the shaping of life.
There are myriad ways of making the Lenten journey
back to our roots. Spend time with the scriptures.
Read the lives of the saints. Go on a retreat. Visit a
shrine. Keep a journal. Pray the rosary again. Sit with
silence. Make the Stations of the Cross. Offer peace to
an enemy. Visit the sick or a shut-in. Give enough
alms to notice the pinch. Do some spiritual reading.
Fast and abstain from meat. They are all part of our
tradition and shards of our own pasts. In them we will
once more meet ourselves, perhaps as if for the first
time, and remember dreams long lost in the clutter of

40 Days for Life
February 13 March 24, 2013
40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign
that draws attention to abortion through the use
of a three point program: prayer and fasting,
constant vigil, and community outreach.
40 Days for Life takes a peaceful approach to
showing local communities the consequences of
abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their
own friends and families. It puts into action a
desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out
of His plan for the end of abortion in America.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Pray outside an abortion facility, at church. at
work, in the car, at home with your family. Each
day during 40 Days for Life, individuals,
churches, families and groups will be asked to
join together in prayer for a specific request so
the entire Body of Christ can unite around a
common focus. People of faith are also invited to
fast throughout 40 Days for Life.
