L’Unione <strong>Italian</strong>a Newsletter Sorrento Cheese Special Edition 2005<br />
On Sunday, April 3 rd ,<br />
2005, L’Unione <strong>Italian</strong>a presented<br />
its 8 th Annual Sorrento Cheese<br />
Festa <strong>Italian</strong>a and it was the biggest<br />
success yet. Festa brought<br />
together approximately 25,000<br />
people to celebrate the <strong>Italian</strong> culture<br />
and heritage as showcased by<br />
the <strong>Italian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tampa</strong>. From<br />
Bambini to Big Nana and Nano,<br />
there was plenty <strong>of</strong> food, fun, entertainment<br />
and culture for the entire<br />
family to enjoy. <strong>The</strong> day <strong>of</strong>fered<br />
a little something for everyone.<br />
From top quality entertainment<br />
to authentic grape stomping<br />
and even a photo opportunity with<br />
a handcrafted gondola. <strong>The</strong>re was<br />
plenty for the kids to enjoy as well<br />
as this years Kidz Zone took over<br />
an entire block featuring plenty <strong>of</strong><br />
activities, amusements & crafts.<br />
<strong>The</strong> highlight <strong>of</strong> the day, in keeping<br />
with the <strong>Italian</strong> tradition, was<br />
the food. Festa served over 1200<br />
pounds <strong>of</strong> sausage, 850 lbs <strong>of</strong><br />
Eggplant, 2,800 Meatballs and<br />
800 pounds <strong>of</strong> calamari. <strong>Italian</strong><br />
club members spent weeks preparing<br />
traditional <strong>Italian</strong> cookies and<br />
the crowds flocked to the homemade<br />
sfingi’s & cannoli’s.<br />

all the hungry event goers this<br />
year’s event featured food from<br />
over 35 bay area restaurants and<br />
caterers and they all did a fabulous<br />
job. We are very grateful to these<br />
establishments for their generosity<br />
and support and ask that you consider<br />
them when making your dining<br />
choices throughout the year.<br />
To successfully promote and coordinate<br />
Festa requires thousands <strong>of</strong><br />
hours <strong>of</strong> work and planning and I<br />
wish to thank the Festa committee<br />
for all their tireless support and<br />
dedication. Additionally, I want to<br />
thank the <strong>Italian</strong> members and<br />
friends, and the voluntarily organizations<br />
that assisted us, together<br />
they contributed 2624 man hours<br />
to successfully stage Festa’s weekend<br />
activities.<br />
Festa has become the primary<br />
fund-raiser <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Italian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> and<br />
the Festa committee is very grateful<br />
for all the community wide<br />
support and sponsorship participation.<br />
Festa 2005 was successful at<br />
raising tens <strong>of</strong> thousand <strong>of</strong> dollars<br />
to assist L’Unione at achieving its<br />
mission <strong>of</strong> maintaining its historic<br />
building, while also preserving the<br />
<strong>Italian</strong> culture and heritage in the<br />
<strong>Tampa</strong> Bay Community.<br />
Furthermore, we are proud to have<br />
renewed our pledge in NIAF’s<br />
matching-funded scholarship<br />
program. Festa contributed<br />
$2,500, which was matched by<br />
NIAF to create a $5,000 scholarship<br />
for an <strong>Italian</strong>-American<br />
college student in the <strong>Tampa</strong><br />
Bay community.<br />
In addition, Festa’s efforts afforded<br />
L’Unione to reach outside<br />
the walls <strong>of</strong> its club and<br />
into the community by donating<br />
over $10,000 to worthy volunteer<br />
organizations and charities.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se organizations<br />
proved to be invaluable as they<br />
provided us numerous volunteers<br />
to assist our efforts.<br />
With your support over the last<br />
8 years, Festa has come a long<br />
way from that small gathering<br />
in Centennial Park. Today,<br />
Festa has grown to be a real<br />
jewel for all generations from<br />
around the community to enjoy.<br />
I am honored to serve as<br />
your chairman and thank each<br />
<strong>of</strong> you for the role you play in<br />
our success . I look forward to<br />
working together on Festa<br />
