It’s that time <strong>of</strong> year again, our 15 th Annual Festa<strong>Italian</strong>a is rapidly approaching, and the committee is gearing upfor a very special 15 th celebration. I am amazed and very gratefulthat we have been able to not only sustain this event over theyears but grow it as well. It is a wonderful cultural experienceand the amount <strong>of</strong> time, labor and dedication put into this event isremarkable. Be sure to come out and support the <strong>Club</strong> and yourfellow <strong>Italian</strong>s Thursday, March 29th through Sunday, April 1 st .<strong>The</strong> building repairs are slowly coming to an end. We are stillworking on the exterior <strong>of</strong> the building and working throughsome small items in the interior <strong>of</strong> the building. I would like toremind everyone to be courteous and mindful <strong>of</strong> the building andits artifacts.As always I would like to thank the volunteers who came out tohelp for Fiesta Day. I know I am always thanking volunteers,but I think it is important to express my gratitude. With outthem we would not be able to participate or put together many<strong>of</strong> our events. Thank you to the Ladies Auxiliary and the Krewe<strong>of</strong> Italia organizing many <strong>of</strong> the volunteers for Fiesta day. <strong>The</strong>Ladies also baked all the cookies we sold that day as well.We have a couple <strong>of</strong> events coming up. In April the Ladies arehosting a Tea at the <strong>Club</strong>, and the Cemetery Committee will behaving their annual Memorial Day Mass at the Cemetery in May.Campo <strong>Italian</strong>o is scheduled to be held in June as well. We alsohave a new group <strong>of</strong> men who have started a social gathering formen on the 3 rd Wednesday <strong>of</strong> the month here at the <strong>Club</strong> from6pm – 10pm. We sell out every year! Angela Genco is thego-to lady for not only baking these delightful treats, but organizing the “staff.”And it really does take a staff <strong>of</strong> people to produce, decorate and wrap the thousands <strong>of</strong> delicaciesthat draw crowds to Angela’s booth at Festa <strong>Italian</strong>a!! She is a tough master, but you will understand whywhen you join us this year to assist with this project. She is responsible for the scheduling <strong>of</strong> baking days,the quantities, ingredients, production, baking, etc., etc.HOWEVER, WE NEED YOU, OUR MEMBERS, TO BEINVOLVED THIS YEAR IN THIS WONDERFUL,TRADITIONAL BAKING EVENT, AT YOUR CLUBHOUSE,TO DIG IN AND BECOME A PART OF THIS EXPERIENCE.Bring someone from your family with you…your children and grandchildren will have amemorable experience, meeting other members, sharing stories, learning the true art <strong>of</strong> making<strong>Italian</strong> Dolci. His great grandparents wereborn in Sicily in Santo Stefano,Allesandria della Rocca, and SanBucca.Jamie is married to MaryFrances Leto Granell, daughter <strong>of</strong>Ingredients:•1/2 cup butter•3/4 cup white sugar•3 eggs•1 teaspoon vanilla extract•1 teaspoon almond extract•1/4 cup milk•1/4 cup vegetable oilRecipe Corner<strong>Italian</strong> Easter CookiesPreheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Greasecookie sheets. In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 cupbutter one at and a time, white then sugar stir in until 1 teaspoon light and vanilla fluffy. and Beat 1 in teaspoon the eggs almond extract, 1/4 cup milk and oil. Combine theflour and baking powder, stir into the wet mixture. Roll dough into 1 inch balls. On a lightly floured surface,roll the balls out into ropes about 5 inches long. Tie into loose knots and place cookies 1 inch apart onto theprepared cookie sheets. Bake for 5 minutes on the bottom shelf and 5 minutes on the top shelf <strong>of</strong> the preheatedoven, until the bottoms <strong>of</strong> the cookies are golden brown.Ingredients:•4 (9 inch) unbaked pie crusts•2 pounds ricotta cheese•6 eggs•8 ounces mozzarella cheese, gratedSam D. Jamie’s children all grewup in the <strong>Italian</strong> <strong>Club</strong> participatingin fashion shows, Christmas and•3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour•5 teaspoons baking powder•4 cups confectioners’ sugar•1/2 cup butter, s<strong>of</strong>tened•1 teaspoon vanilla extract•1 teaspoon almond extract•3 tablespoons <strong>of</strong> milkEaster Meat Pie•1 pound cooked ham, chopped•1/2 pound Genoa salami, chopped•1/4 pound prosciutto, chopped•1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheeseEaster children’s events, SantaLucia, children’s Sicilian DanceGroups, and many other clubevents <strong>of</strong> the times.When asked how Jamiefeels about the <strong>Italian</strong> <strong>Club</strong>’sfuture, he says he has high hopesfor the continuing growth andstrength <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Club</strong>. He feels thatit is extremely important that wecontinue to try and draw in theyouth because they are our futureand the future <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Italian</strong> <strong>Club</strong>.This, he says, was one <strong>of</strong> the mainreasons for the formation <strong>of</strong> thePreheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place ricotta in a large mixing bowl and add eggs one ata time while mixing on low speed. Stir in mozzarella, ham, salami, and prosciutto until all ingredients are wellcombined. Line two 9 inch pans with pastry. Spoon half <strong>of</strong> mixture into each pan. Sprinkle half <strong>of</strong> the Parmesancheese over each pie, then cover with top pastry. Crimp edges and cut steam vents in tops. Bake in preheatedoven for 1 hour, until crust is golden brown. Cool on racks.PAGE 5

As youcan see, they children were very excited and festive in their bestpirate gear.
