It wasearly evening at the Italian Club inYbor City. The Philadelphia native,Oldsmar resident and adopted son ofYbor, who recently died at age 90,was doing a book signing – and a lotmore. He had just co-authored “MyView From the Corner” with boxinghistorian Burt Sugar.Dundee was Mr. Congeniality, shaking hands, exchanging backslaps, laughing heartily, holdingcourt, working the house andregaling everyone with back-in-thedaytales. Happy Hour was rarely thisgregarious – even at the hands-onItalian Club. Some notes you keep. A fewDundee outtakes:• Early Ali: “He was an introvert.”• “You know all that ‘poetry’ thatAli was famous for? It was mostlymine. And it stunk.”• “What did I teach Ali? How tomove • “What in the did ring. he [Ali] But lose I made himthink after being it was out his [via idea.” Vietnamdraft protest] of boxing inhis prime? He lost his edge.He never regained it.”• “The greatest boxerever? Willie Pepp. Thegreatest impact on thesport? Ali.”• “The Muslims reallydidn’t affect me. I did myPAGE 15job. I don’t get involved with thingslike a person’s religion.”Gene V.
