Leader:
People:
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the
Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits.
The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in
steadfast love.
For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward
those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our
transgressions from us.
The steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who
fear him. Bless the Lord, O my soul.
Gracious God, our souls are hungry for your word, but some of your people hunger for
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
(A time of silence for personal confession)
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
*Gloria Patri No. 579
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Christian Formation Seminars
September 15, 22 & 29
Waiting as Understood
in the Psalms
Dr. Jack Aupperle
We think about waiting during Advent, a season of
waiting and preparation, yet waiting is a constant,
and often difficult, part of our lives. How do we wait
gracefully as Christians? Come to the September
seminars and find how psalms can help us wait.
Everyone is welcome!
WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Today – Waiting and Self Awareness
Psalm 8 shows us how an expectation of waiting is often self revelation and definition.
September 22 – Waiting and Worship
Psalm 146 gives us insight into worship as waiting. Worship is more than a formality. Worship is an active
waiting that speaks to the sources of trust, the meaning of happiness, and the question of human freedom.
Adult Sunday School at 9:45 a.m.
• Genesis Class 9:45 a.m. in Room 131. All are welcome.
• Builders Class 9:45 a.m. in Room 176
• Younger Adults 9:45 a.m. in Room 238. The class meets today and next Sunday, September 22.
For a complete list of Westminster’s Christian Education programs for adults, please look for our
brochure on the tables in the narthex or go to www.westminster-church.org/education.html.
Welcome back!
Regular Sunday school classes
will meet at both 9:45 and 11:00
a.m. All of the details – plus
required registration forms – are
available on the church website.
9:45
We have a brand new
curriculum! Children in pre-K
through 4th grade are invited to
join us for Sunday school class/
small groups and children’s
worship. Today these children
will learn that we can help others
know about Jesus.
11:00
We have a brand new
curriculum! Children ages 2½
through 6th grade are invited to
join us for Sunday school class/
small groups and children’s
worship. Today’s lesson for
children ages 2½ through pre-K
is about Joseph being in jail,
and they will learn that God has
a plan for them. Students in K
through 6th grade will study
Moses, and discover that they
can show courage, even when
things seem impossible.
JAM!
Did you know we have a youth
group that’s designed especially
for 5th & 6th graders? It’s called
JAM (which stands for Jesus
And Me) and is all about helping
kids grow in their faith in God,
while having a whole lot of fun
with their friends! We meet every
Wednesday in Room 257 from
6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The café is
open for dinner, too – serving
fun inexpensive meals from 5:00
to 6:00 p.m. All 5th & 6th grade
students are invited to join us –
and bring a friend (there are treats
if you do!). Registration forms are
available on the website.
Sacrament Education
Sacrament Education classes will
be offered to all 2nd graders (with
a parent) on September 22 & 29
at 9:45 a.m. in Room 194. These
classes, which focus on baptism
and communion, are designed to
help prepare children to join the
congregation in the celebration
of communion. To register, or
for more information, please
contact Tracey Mattes at mattes@
westminster-church.org or 412-
835-6630x225.
YOTB-KIDZ
You can share God’s story with
your child, using the following
activity. It features one of the
scripture readings from this week’s
Year of the Bible reading plan.
This activity (and last week’s) is
also available on Westminster’s
website.
GOD SAYS: Read Psalm 104:24-
25. God makes so many wonderful
things!
We THINK: Have you been to
the zoo or the aquarium recently?
Think about all the different kinds
of animals you saw there – from
tiny tree frogs and mice to tall
giraffes and huge elephants. The
variety is just amazing and each
one is made to fit exactly and
perfectly into its place in the world!
And who made each of them? God
did! And God made each of us
to fit exactly into our own special
place. Pretty incredible, isn’t it?
We DO: Take a trip to the zoo! If
you can’t actually go, visit a zoo
online, watch a video, or look at
some books with pictures of lots
of animals. Think about how God
made each of them unique and
special (just like you!).
FOR THE YOUTH
Cold Pizza
Our weekly Sunday School class for grades 7-12 isn’t
like your mama’s Sunday School class! We’re getting
together to wrap our heads around not just what
the Bible says, but how we can say what the Bible
teaches to others. We get to do cool creative projects
with videos, poems, prayers, and other activities.
Throw in the bagels and you’ve got yourself a real
party! Join us in the Yahweh café at 11:00!
Confirmation Classes
Registration for both the fall and spring Confirmation
classes is due September 25. An informational
meeting for parents of students in 9th grade or
above will be held next Sunday, September 22, at
noon in the Youth Office. If you have any questions
or need a registration form, please email Cassandra
at Millis@westminster-church.org.
Veritas
Join us each Wednesday for dinner from 5:00
to 6:00, and then games, worship, and great
discussions from 6:00 to 8:00. This year we’re
looking at what it looks like to live our faith, and
as Jesus put it, to live it to the fullest. How does
your faith play out in school? At home? In your
relationships with friends, or family, or loved ones?
Don’t miss it!
Reknew: Heretic
This fall, Reknew, Westminster’s young adult
group, will be strongly considering heresy. If you’ve
ever worried that your beliefs don’t exactly square
with everyone else’s, you are not alone. In fact,
you are in very good company of some pretty
impressive minds throughout history. Heretic will
be a discussion of what and why we believe. Join
us Tuesday nights at 7:00 in the youth office, and
please contact Cassandra at Millis@westminsterchurch.org
with any questions!
For more information, contact Jason Freyer at 412-835-6630x222 or freyer@westminster-church.org or
Ed Sutter at 412-835-6630x224 or sutter@westminster-church.org.
If you have lost a spouse, child,
family member, or friend, it may
be hard to feel optimistic about
probably found that not many
people understand the deep hurt
you feel. This can be a confusing
time when you feel isolated and
have many questions about things
you’ve never before faced. Grief
Recovery is a faith-based grief
support group that can help you
face the challenges of loss and
move toward rebuilding your
life. Plan to join our Fall 2013
Grief Recovery sessions held in
Memorial Parlor. We will use the
book Beyond the Broken Heart:
A Journey through Grief by Julie
Yarbrough. To register and for
