Compare that to looking and shooting from around cover—much better, is it not? Also, consider that much of gun training in the USA today is lop-sided. By this I mean that they only train one side of the body, the left or the right, whichever is dominant. Training the lesser side is rarely examined beyond the cursory discussion of the dominant hand being injured. At my school we seek to be as ambidextrous as possible and don’t consider strong side-weak side issues. Rather, we have a right side and a left side. Since we are shooting around cover, we are looking at right side and left side. How will you handle a piece of cover that only offers utility from the one side, especially if it is your traditionally “weak side.” The simplest and best answer is to put the gun in the other hand. Thus, the importance of completely training both the right and left sides. Consider also how you will handle the cover issue if you have non-combatants with you. These are the folks you are often protecting such as family members, friends and others. Will you How will you handle a piece of cover that only offers utility from the one side, especially if it is your traditionally “weak side?” jump behind cover and leave them in the open? Only a coward would do that. Give some thought as to how you will get them behind cover as well. In the old days we often joked that the best cover was a swarm of bullets heading toward the adversary. In these cases, as extreme and radical as it may sound, a short, intense burst of suppressive fire from your Glock or XD pistol may in fact buy you the time to get to safety. It may not be pretty or approved by certain ranges but it has proven effective. Don’t discount the use of cover, but certainly don’t over-emphasize it either.
