Unwin takes control!
While many IRO students enrol on the IRO degree in Railway when she received her BSc degree
choose the professional Operational Management in at a special ceremony in Glasgow,
development programme to support
their career progression, for Norma
Unwin a greater cross-industry
appreciation was the key factor.
Unwin has almost 20 years
railway experience, having first
joined British Rail in 1990 to work
in the Battersea Park ticket office.
‘Since then I’ve had a number
of roles, working as a manager in
both customer services and revenue
protection. A recent position was
control manager for First Capital
Connect (FCC) on the Great
Northern route and now I’ve
just started as route performance
manager for the Thameslink route,’
she explains.
But the busy mother of two
from Stevenage felt a broader
understanding of the rail industry
eluded her, hence her decision to
Right: Norma Unwin receives her
BSc from Jo Kaye, Network Rail
route director for London North
Western
2008, with the full support of her
employer.
“I have a degree in business, but
wanted to broaden my knowledge
of the industry. The IRO degree
course opens you up to
an excellent network
of like-minded people
and gives you the
background knowledge
of how all the different
functions within
the industry
interact and
support one
another. It
has also
helped me
to become
more
analytical
and
question
things more.’
On 7 July,
Unwin’s hard
work was
rewarded
along with 16 other IRO graduates.
Says a delighted Unwin: ‘No
one thinking of enrolling on the
IRO’s Professional Development
Programme should underestimate
the hard work and commitment
required, but it has certainly been
more than worth it and I would
highly recommend it.’
