Serco and Abellio confirm Northern Rail top team Joint owners of Northern Rail, Serco and Abellio, have confirmed four-year appointments for Ian Bevan as managing director and Steve Butcher as chief operating officer. Butcher will also be deputy managing director. The new role of chief operating officer has specific responsibility for co-ordinating strategic and day-to-day operational delivery. Steve Butcher Ludeman gets honourary doctorate from Salford Keith Ludeman, group chief executive of the Go- Ahead Group is to be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Salford for his commitment to transport. Ludeman, who received a masters degree in transport engineering and planning from Salford University in 1975, will receive an honorary doctorate in recognition of the senior positions he has held in transport during a career spanning nearly 40 years. He said: ‘I have always looked back on my time at Salford with enormous affection, so this award is a great honour for me. The postgraduate degree I received from the university led directly to my first job in the transport sector, and helped me start out on a most interesting and rewarding career.’ Ludeman, 60, held senior management positions in several bus companies in Greater Manchester, Lancashire and London, before joining Go-Ahead in 1996. He was appointed chief executive of the group’s London bus division in 1997 and moved over to head the rail division in 1999, before assuming his present role in July 2006. Fennah joins Hull Trains First Hull Trains has named Darren Fennah as its head of customer service delivery – a new role. Fennah, 44, has more than 10 years’ experience in the rail industry, with previous employers including Anglia Railways, National Express and East Coast. His new role will focus on the complete on-board customer experience, including menu development. Fennah said: ‘It is important that we work as a team to raise the standard of customer service delivery across the company.’ He added: ‘We will be relying heavily on feedback from customers.’ People round-up Greater Manchester sees change in public transport leadership Councillor Ian Macdonald (below left) has been appointed Chair of Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) for the coming year. At the authority’s AGM, Councillor Keith Whitmore (below right) was also confirmed as vice chair and will lead the influential Policy & Resources Committee. Councillors Doreen Dickinson and Richard Knowles will continue to chair the Rail & Metrolink Networks Committee and Capital Projects Committee respectively. Macdonald, 73, who lives with his wife in Worsley, became a member of GMITA in 2004. Councillor Whitmore, 55, an elected member of Manchester City Council for more than 30 years, is a director of Greater Manchester Accessible Transport and chairs the board for the Heaton Park Tramway. He has served on GMITA for 19 years. Rowen joins LRTA Paul Rowen, former Liberal Democrat MP for Rochdale, is the new regional officer for the Light Rail Transit Association. Rowen, 55, will be looking after Manchester Metrolink. CILT appoints COO The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK (CILT) has appointed Donna Cresswell as chief operating officer. She will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the institute and for developing commercial opportunities. Cresswell, who will be based at CILT’s offices in Corby, Northamptonshire, joins CILT following recent posts as director of communications at the Motor Neurone Disease Association and head of communications for Carlsberg UK. Henry Williams names new managing director Andrew Nelson has been appointed managing director of engineering firm Henry Williams of Darlington, a firm established in 1883 by the industrial pioneer and inventor of the spring-loaded switch lever for railway points. Nelson, 30, joined the company as forging and fabrication director in March 2008 and since then has overseen a major investment programme. Watters promoted to head of transport at Aecom David Watters is Aecom’s new head of transport for the UK. Watters, 55, who has been with the consultancy’s transport division for a year, joined British Rail’s graduate management programme in 1977, going on to become route manager for the East Coast Main Line and then Intercity manager for Scotland. Before joining Aecom, he was director of rail for Halcrow. Watters replaces John Vincent, who is to launch Aecom’s Strategic Planning and Advisory Service for global transport. PAGE 34 AUGUST 2010
