Dear Parents,
Our ‘summer’ of sporting events has begun with Euro
2012 having kicked off. The fervent support shown by the
fans from various European countries reminds us of the
importance of supporting, and working hard for a
common goal.
really show what it means to be a pupil of Sacred Heart
School, really does strike a chord with us. We pray that
our pupils will continue to grow in their love of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus in order that we may together build a world
of love, peace, truth and justice.
I have a dream
Today at school, we have celebrated our school feast day
of the Sacred Heart. As one of the most famous religious
devotions to Jesus’ physical heart as the representation of
his divine love for humanity, we were reminded as a
school community at Mass this afternoon of how we can,
each day, try to show love in both small and big ways in all
that we do. Mr. Rooney and the RE Department prepared
our celebration, along with Ms. Mazur and Mr. King who
practiced the lower school choir to sing their ‘hearts out’
in a truly wonderful celebration. Fr. Victor blessed medals
for the children, before all were dismissed for the
weekend clutching a small treat enjoyed by both the
children and staff.
This week at school we welcomed back our Year 12
students from their public exams and work experience.
They have spent the week involved in workshops and
University visits to help them prepare for their UCAS
applications. As they begin their A2 courses next week,
Ms. Antoniou and Mr. Thompson report that there is a
real determination and maturity amongst the cohort now
to do their very best in their final year at Sacred Heart.
We also welcomed back on Thursday night our pupils and
staff who spent four days in France. While the weather
was not particularly kind to them, the pupils were
excellent ambassadors for the school, and had a
wonderful opportunity to practice their French and
experience something of French life. Thank you to Ms.
Newman and accompanying staff for organising another
very successful trip abroad.
As a school, we are taking part in the I0O Days of Peace
campaign which is a joint project with various Dioceses,
Catholic Education, CAFOD and others. The children will
hear about the campaign in assemblies next week, and
how we can, as a Catholic community, take action for
peace, locally, nationally, and globally. The children will
pray prayers centered around the ideals of the Olympics,
as well as take part in various events, culminating in a
special Mass for schools at St. Georges Cathedral in
October. As the Olympic tickets have now arrived at
school, and we have one of our pupils running as a torch
bearer, the reality of this great event and opportunities to
I dream of a world
filled with peace and harmony
where humans and creation really live as one
where the sun of justice shines
on all the children of the Creator Father and Mother
Earth.
I dream of a world
where there are no exploiters and exploited,
no slaves and masters,
no very rich and very poor,
no oppressors and oppressed.
I dream of a world
where governments are on the side of the poor, those
without land,
the homeless and the unemployed;
those in society who are
not considered to be children of God and Mother Earth.
I dream of a world
where chemicals, herbicides, fungicides, pesticides
and other deathly substances
disappear from the earth forever.
I dream of a world where the richness of forests,
the fresh air, fields and rivers
can, with humanity, live life to the full and praise God the
creator.
I dream of a world where the reign of God
would also be a reign of justice and peace and love for the
whole of creation.
If we all dream
The dream will become a reality...
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS:
Great Writing Showcase
Each week from here ‘till the end of the exam season the English department will print exemplary
pieces of writing from students in different year groups, with comments explaining why these students
have achieved the top grades. This week’s piece is from Gregory Boateng in 10B. This is what his
teacher, Mr. Williams had to say about his writing: “I love the way Gregory used Anthony’s famous
speech from Julius Ceasar to open this speech about the Olympics – it makes his speech seem very
authoritative, but also witty at the same time. Gregory also flatters the reader, he talks about London
being such a great place and calls it “our beautiful global city” which would persuade people to share
their city with the world. He uses a wide range of punctuation with care and uses paragraphs to
organize his writing. This is a B at GCSE – more details and development of his arguments could have
gained him an A, but this is impressive stuff for a pupils doing single award. Well done”.
Friends, teachers, Sacred Heart pupils, lend me your ears! I’m
standing here today to praise the Olympics, not to bury them!
Firstly, I think the Olympics are a great thing because it’s an event
that can “inspire a generation” and it’s an honour to host this
wonderful event in a great place like the UK. For example, when
Usain Bolt broke the world record at the last Olympics it motivated
and inspired the young generation and helped them believe in themselves.
Furthermore, it is important that we help support the younger generation because the children of
today are the children of tomorrow. The Olympics could help get children off the streets because if we
start sports tournaments and teams it will keep children busy and well away from crime.
Thirdly, I think the Olympics are a great thing because it’s an event that brings all 203 countries of the
world together as one; and let’s face it – there are enough forces in the world trying to separate and
endanger bonds of friendship between countries!
Last, but not least, the Olympics are a great thing because they have created 200,000 jobs for local
people which means unemployment levels could drop, which means more tax payers, which means less
people will need income support, which means poor families will have more income to help them with
their needs! All this can only be good for the UK while the world is in the grip of recession.
The thing is - the Olympics don’t only benefit people, they also benefit businesses, such as travel
agencies, hotels, shops and many more because the Olympics will bring many tourists who will spend
money on things. This means businesses will have more income which will help our economy, that’s the
money in your pocket I’m talking about!
Friends, South Londoners, Olympians – let’s make this the best Olympics ever. The games are coming:
let’s welcome the world to our beautiful, global city!
