Dear Parents,
A four day week for us all can often feel longer than a normal week as we try and cram in as much as
possible before final exams. This week has been no different with lots of last minute revision sessions
or exams being sat in the Church Hall and Sixth Form Centre. Please ensure that your child is in school
every day, and is properly equipped for upcoming exams and final assessments.
Ms Steadman has had a particularly busy week with both her year group and exam groups (‘AS’ Level /
GCSE) in Drama sitting exams. The ‘AS’ production of ‘Blood Wedding’ on Wednesday evening
demonstrated how much the year 12 Drama students have developed this year both in terms of their
acting ability and understanding of classic drama. The two external examiners appeared pleased, but
we will have to await results in August to confirm that those smiles are translated into good grades.
At the end of last week we had our first session of ‘Come Cook With Me’ – it was, without doubt, one
of the best things we have had happen in school this year. Ms Davey and Ms Hibbett had a morning of
cooking which parents and their children undertook. In a school environment, where, despite our best
efforts, we sometimes find it hard to replicate a close family bond, it was incredibly moving to witness
our pupils working with their parents – one of those special moments in education that reminds us all
why we are educators. As we watch the children grow each day, we might think about what they will
be like in ten, twenty, or thirty years’ time. A documentary ‘7 Up’ is about to screen the eighth episode
’56 Up’. In bringing us up to date stories about the people involved, we can see that they have all
enjoyed good times as well as enduring bad times; have won and lost; struggled and succeeded. But
what it really shows us is, that when all is said and done, what really matters to people is friends and
family. And so, for the children we pray that despite the difficulties of school they sometimes face,
they know and understand that their friends and family are there to support them.
O Lord God,
School is not always easy,
And some days it is very difficult.
Yet I know that you will give me patience, wisdom, and courage, to be excellent in every
way,
and you will help me love others, as you love me.
Amen
- Ms B Boyle
Deputy Headteacher
English Department News: Great Writing Showcase
Each week from here ‘till the end of the exam season the English department will print exemplary pieces of writing
from students in different year groups, with comments explaining why these students have achieved the top
grades. This week’s piece is from Tyrone Salami in 9M. This is what his teacher, Ms Price had to say about his
writing: “Firstly, this piece is just so original and unexpected – Tyrone has thought about what would stand out
and entertain his readers. He’s used a wide variety of reasons, humour and statistics to back up his ideas, but
most of all he’s used carefully controlled, precise English. The final P.S. shows that he’s thought carefully about
every part of his work and not just the opening – lots of pupils get lazy towards the end of a piece of writing. This
is a secure level 8.”
Task: write a letter to the producers of a new TV series
called ‘Dream Jobs’ explaining you’re your dream job
is and why you should go on the programme.
Dear Dream Jobs,
Dream Jobs Studios
78 Anchor Road
E57 1RQ
let me experience my dream job for a day. In the UK
only one in 10,000 people are milkmen, whereas in the
US (with their stronger economy) one in 9,000 people
are milkmen. Look at that gigantic difference!
I want to be a milkman because it’s part of my heritage:
my great-grandfather was a milkman; my grandfather
was a milkman; my Dad is a currently a milkman and I
want to be a milkman.
I am writing this letter to tell you about my dream job
and why I would love to try it.
I am not going to bore you by telling you about how I’d
like to be a footballer; or a dancer or a singer
because everybody wants to be these things. But I am
unique.
Have you ever been in that situation where you have no
milk to go with your cornflakes? Have you been in that
situation where you have no milk in your tea? Or have
you ever just wished for a cow so you could have more
milk?
If you have said ‘yes’ to any of these questions you will
not be surprised to hear that my dream job is to be a
milk man.
You should pick me, in fact, you HAVE to pick me and
Furthermore, I think this job will help me to get more
girls’ numbers. Currently, I have never had the nerve to
talk to a girl. If I become a milkman, however, I will get
girls’ numbers left, right and centre! Every girl loves a
good milkman!
If you would like to help make this country even
greater, (even though that’s virtually impossible
because our country is so great already) make my
dreams come true by giving me my dream job! I
promise you, I will become a role model for every single
future milkman in this country!
Yours faithfully,
Tyrone Salami
P.S. If my mother writes to you asking you about my
‘Dream Job’ application, tell her I said I wanted to be a
doctor.
COME COOK WITH ME!
On Thursday 03 rd May, Ms Davey and Ms Hibbett held Sacred Heart’s first ‘Come Cook with Me’ session. The aim
was to get parents and their children working together to improve communication whilst having fun cooking. The
morning was a great success and everyone who took part worked exceptionally well together and produced
amazing foods.
Well done to everyone who took part but special congratulations to Michael Julien and his
mum who won the whole event with 95% vote for their product by the other participants.
Certificates are on their way!
Ms Davey and Ms Hibbett will be looking to run another session of ‘Come Cook with Me’ in
the future so look out for more information!
As the Year 11s and 12s prepare to go on
study leave, consider these quotes and
take the time you have off seriously!
Focusing our attention - daily and hourly - not
on what is wrong, but on what we love and
value, allows us to participate in the birth of a
better future, ushered in by the choices we
make each and every day.
If you don't have a vision for the future, then
your future is threatened to be a repeat of the
past. You can never plan the future by the past.
- Edmund Burke
The future seems to me no unified dream but a
mince pie, long in the baking, never quite done.
To the daring belongs the future.
- Emma Goldman
Everything we do seeds the future. No action is
an empty one.
The future is purchased by the present.
The future is not there waiting for us. We
create it by the power of imagination.
Real generosity toward the future lies in giving
all to the present.
Planning your future saves you from regretting
your past.
The past gives us experience and memories;
the present gives us challenges and
opportunities; the future gives us vision and
hope.
Just remember--when you think all is lost, the
future remains.
This is just to let upper school students know that Blossom Garuba our Connexions Advisor will no
longer be working with us due to restructuring of the service but if you need help with writing a
curriculum vitae, there is a template to be found on the VLE in the Careers Corridor, as well as a
covering letter. If you want to talk about careers or opportunities after leaving school etc please do
not hesitate to talk to myself or Ms Yamada.
- Ms Egwuatu
MATHS CLUB IS COMING BACK!
That’s right! You read correctly. The much awaited maths club is coming back to
a corridor near you. Watch out in the newsletter for the actual date!
- Ms Egwuatu
YEAR 9 BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH
This is a gentle reminder that by Friday 18 th May 2012 all documentation regarding your
‘Volunteering’, ‘Physical’ and ‘Skills’ section of the award needs to be completed and submitted.
I have spoken to a few teachers who have informed me that some of you have not actually
completed tasks/activities to the correct date and will therefore not be signed off . Tut Tut!
Can you please take these components seriously and complete them honestly as if other
components are not completed you will not be passed for the award and that would be an absolute
waste considering our ordeal whilst camping!
