‘LIVING OUR FAITH’
Sacred Heart Bridge Walk, 17 th March 2013
‘Faith is like that: if good works do
not go with it, it is quite dead’
The above quote taken from the James 2:19 pretty
much sums up the Sacred Heart approach to our school
Catholic ethos. On Sunday despite the rain, wind and
cold 453 Sacred Heart pupils walked the 7 miles and 8
bridges between Tower Bridge and Vauxhall.
Our wonderful staff (almost all) and with their families
also attended to make it possible and when you add
parents, family friends and governors I would estimate
that nearly 600 members of our school community took
part in the event.
As Headteacher I have many reasons to be proud each
year but no event pleases me more than this. I, with my
senior team, strive to achieve that delicate balance of
exemplar examination success with a solid grounding of
teaching the gospel values set out by our Lord.
To witness Sunday’s event in the pouring rain and
howling wind I believe our pupils are a shining example
of that balance. A final thank you to all but remember
that we must try to bring in every penny in order to
make it all worthwhile. You have already been informed
of the rising prices and the weakening pound which will
impact heavily on our mission to Pattaya in October.
As we approach Easter I feel that the Sacred Heart has
prepared well for this most holy of seasons.
SACRED HEART CHARITY QUIZ
The winners of this year’s Charity Week Quiz, and the
official title of ‘Masterminds of Sacred Heart’ goes this
year to form 11M & Ms Quartey. They played a joker on
every round, thus doubling their points to an impressive
98 out of a possible 100. Following close on their heels
were 12MN & Ms Noonan with 96 points, then in third
place were 11G & Ms Jones with
84 points. Well done to all who
took part, and many thanks to
Mr L Williams for writing the
questions.
The total raised by the quiz for the Thailand mission
was nearly £250:00.
For the First Time Ever Sacred Heart School Entered the National
Junior Indoor Rowing Championships at Lee Valley Athletics Centre
Sacred Heart Rowing Squad Had their own non-uniform day
Sacred Heart pupils seem to be having a huge amount of success in sport at the moment and rowing is no
exception. We are working in partnership with London Youth Rowing and every Tuesday evening 16 of our most
talented rowers have been training hard on the school indoor rowing machines to be selected to represent the
school at the National Championships. The Championship was held at Lee Valley Athletics Centre where the
pupils not only took part in their rowing event but they also did activities such as fencing, rock climbing, BMX
biking and smoothie making. Sacred Heart showed great determination and strength of character at the event
which seemed to help us compete against other more experienced rowers some of which were members of
rowing clubs across the country.
The year 7 students had to row as far as they could in 2 minutes. They were constantly being ranked in order of
meters covered every 10 seconds and competed in races of 22. The races were up on the big screen and the rest
of the team did their upmost to support their fellow teams mates. The year 8 students did the same but they
raced over a longer 3 minute period.
So the results are as follows
Year 7 Boys Dai-Nashiel Diez (479m) came in 51 st place and Akida Johnson (461m) came 74 th out of 182
year 7 boys competitors.
Year 7 Girls Isabel Solarte (485m) came in 24 th place, Timi Omotosho (469m) was 43 rd and Zoe Wegde
(444m) came 84 th out of 207 competitors.
Year 8 Boys there was an outstanding performance from Azenosa Osazee (805m) who came in 14 th place,
Joshua Aromona (773m) came 36 th , Ade Adeniran (746m) came 57 th , Ondre Tindale (724m) was in 75 th
place and Daniel Kale (699m) came in 97 th place. This was out of 185 year 8 boys competitors.
Year 8 girls had a huge competition with 238 girls in the field. Carrie Kalala-Diangituka (689m) came in 74 th
place and Oghomwen Obasuyi (646m).
The whole team had a great day out and for our first rowing competition I am very impressed with the results. A
special mention for Azenosa and Isabel who showed exceptional technique, talent and raw determination to get
the top girl and boy places here at Sacred Heart. Very well done. If anyone would like to join rowing club come
and see Miss Umbleja in the PE office. The results were very pleasing and this is only the start for the rowing
squad we hope to have some sessions on the water in the summer.
GIFTED AND TALENTED DEBATE
On Wednesday 21 st March 10 Gifted and Talented Year 11 pupils went with Ms Thomas and Ms Pemberton to a
debate at Cadogan Hall entitled “Both Britain and the EU would be happier if they got divorced”. We were
fortunate enough to hear from a range of extremely prestigious speakers – Nigel Farage, Daniel Hannan, Katinka
Barysch and Leon Brittan. The debate was topical, exciting and impassioned with some very persuasive points
made both for and against the argument, leaving us with a lot to discuss. The pupils’ beahviour was exemplary and
we all had an extremely entertaining evening.
