Skyline Service Fair Showcases Volunteer
Opportunities
This article appeared in the January 12 AAPS News.
http://news.a2schools.org/skyline-service-fairshowcases-volunteer-opportunities/
AAPSEF 2011-2012 Academic Year Gifts, continued from
page 1
That’s not all. Specific donors and groups give
funds for designated purposes, and AAPSEF supports
their generosity by administering those dollars.
This year, endowed funds will award approximately
$4,000 in scholarship (http://www.aapsef.org/scholarships/scholarships.html)
support to AAPS students.
The Dancing Through History Grant awarded
$6,000 in support of guest artist’s work in the elementary
schools, in partnership with the University
Musical Society. Through the Karen Thomas Fund,
$3,000 of classic literature will be purchased for
elementary school libraries. The Disability Awareness
Workshops Fund received $1,000 in ongoing
support for this important program for our elementary
students. $3,000 was given through the Village
Fund to enhance social inclusion at the elementary
level.
In addition, Great Idea Grants (http://www.aapsef.
org/initiatives/grants.html) to staff and faculty totaled
$25,000 for this academic year.
Seventeen service organizations set up booths
at Skyline High School on January 11 to take
part in the school’s first-ever Service Fair.
Skyline teacher Toni Burton said the fair is part
of the school’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrations,
and shows students the importance
of service. Teacher Nicole Barrett also helped
organize the event.
The booths were set up in the cafeteria, and
students visited the fair with their Sky Time
classes. With so many organizations present,
students could find volunteer opportunities to
fit their interests, such as learning to train animals
at the Humane Society, helping take care
of trees at the Ann Arbor Nature Conservancy,
or donating time to the Michigan Theater.
“This is one of the first times I’ve been in a high
school, in terms of a volunteer fair, which is a
very cool initiative that I hope spreads,” said
Alex Garnepudi, who represented the American
Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. “It’s very important
to engage young people in the idea of
service and giving back to the community.”
First grade students at Kensington Metropark
Gerda Paschal, the assistant manager of the
downtown shop Ten Thousand Villages, talked
with many excited students. “We’ve had high
school students as volunteers before, but there
wasn’t an organized effort to get these opportunities
out to students, so this (fair) is really
wonderful,” she said.
piece or ensemble piece to perform in front of a
judge while also receiving comments and a rating.
Out of the 53 events, 44 received a Division
One rating, this is the highest rating one can
rating. Congratulations to all those involved!
Skyline Theater Performs Amadeus
Amadeus is Skyline Theatre’s entry into the annual
Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association
Theater competition. The constraints of a
45-minute traveling production focus the evaluation
of each show on its acting and special
technique considerations. We invite everyone
to view our full performance on February 3 or 4
at 7:30pm in the Skyline High School Theatre.
(Please note: content may not be appropriate for
young children.) Tickets are $5.00 and may be
purchased at ShowTix4U.com. More info: skyline2.aaps.k12.mi.us/theatre
Skyline DECA students win big at conference
This article appeared in the January 20 AAPS News.
http://news.a2schools.org/skyline-service-fairshowhttp://news.a2schools.org/skyline-deca-studentswin-big-at-conference/
The Skyline High School DECA chapter took
home a slew of awards after attending the DECA
District Career and Development Conference/
Competition on January 12 at Eastern Michigan
University.
The group of 28 students won 27 medals, and 15
of the students qualified for the State Career Development
Conference/Competition in Dearborn
on March 9-12.
DECA is a co-curricular program for high school
marketing and business students. Its activities are
integrated into Skyline’s Business Magnet Program
and the business electives. DECA competitions
use interviews, tests, role-plays, case studies
and written projects to evaluate marketing and
management skills. Many DECA students continue
on to top business schools across the country.
