1.1 sawmilling with chainsaws: a technical overview NICK PASIECzNIK Freehand sawmilling with chainsaws is increasingly common in tropical forests and elsewhere, as chainsaws are now relatively cheap and widely available. The technique is especially suitable for exploitation of single trees by people living in or near forests who do not have the capital to invest in more expensive sawmilling equipment. many of the people doing the sawing do not own the chainsaw they use; they hire, rent or borrow one, or use one as a paid labourer. many of them save up in hope of one day becoming an owner-operator, or being able to buy and rent out a saw without having to do the hard work themselves. The availability of chainsaws has been a boon to many people.
