Pedagogical Considerations for e-Learners<br />

Learner control theory <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> research plays a signific<strong>an</strong>t role in the design <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> delivery<br />

of appropriate dist<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>learning</strong> programs. We know that faculty teach <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> students learn<br />

using different instructional <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>learning</strong> styles. Wills (1994) suggested that as a result of<br />

participating in a dist<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>learning</strong> program that encourages diversity; dist<strong>an</strong>ce students c<strong>an</strong><br />

gain new knowledge <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> social skills including the ability <strong>to</strong> communicate effectively <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />

collaborate with dispersed colleagues <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> peers. Learner-centered instruction places students<br />

at the focal point of the teaching/<strong>learning</strong> process <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> encourages the underst<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ing of <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

appreciation for diverse educational, professional, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> personal characteristics among<br />

students (Chur<strong>to</strong>n, 2003). Strategies <strong>to</strong> impact <strong>learning</strong> outcomes must be viewed through <strong>an</strong><br />

underst<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ing of the population that is <strong>to</strong> be served. Although these characteristics c<strong>an</strong><br />

pertain <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong>y group of students, it is evident that successful e-learners tend <strong>to</strong> be:<br />

• Independent learners<br />

• Self- motivated <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> driven <strong>to</strong> achieve<br />

• Accountable for responsibilities<br />

• Bal<strong>an</strong>cing multiple responsibilities<br />

• Appreciative of time <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> dist<strong>an</strong>ce<br />

Chur<strong>to</strong>n (2004) suggested that <strong>to</strong> be successful in e-<strong>learning</strong>, students need <strong>to</strong><br />

develop <strong>an</strong> appreciation <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> underst<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ing for active <strong>learning</strong> <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>an</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> work<br />

independently from the instruc<strong>to</strong>r <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>/or facilita<strong>to</strong>r. Student- <strong>to</strong>-student networking <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

student-<strong>to</strong>-teacher communications such as email, virtual discussion board, synchronous chat<br />

sessions, telephone calls, or informal meetings c<strong>an</strong> assist in facilitating the <strong>learning</strong> process.<br />

In addition, consistent, non-intrusive- instruc<strong>to</strong>r intervention <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> communication with<br />

students signific<strong>an</strong>tly increases the completion rate of students.<br />

Research on technology's benefits for teaching is viewed generally as positive when<br />

shifting from a traditional direct approach <strong>to</strong> a more learner-centered approach. Research<br />

(Dede, 1996) specifically shows that educa<strong>to</strong>r’s use of technology results in:<br />

• Increased emphasis on individualized instruction<br />

• More time engaged by teachers advising students<br />

• Increased interest in teaching<br />

• Interest in experimenting with emerging technology<br />

• Increased administra<strong>to</strong>r <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> teacher productivity
