Gardens
Cycling in the Upper Gardens
Where the Gardens Meet the Sea
A two mile stretch of stunning Victorian gardens slice
right through the heart of the resort, separating the
pedestrianised shopping centre from the beach and
providing peaceful retreats away from the crowds.
Listed Gardens
The Grade II listed gardens are split into the Lower,
Central and Upper Gardens and provide a huge
range of facilities, including tennis, putting, mini-golf,
children’s play areas, an art exhibition, cafés and
ice-cream kiosks.
Bandstand
The popular
Lower Gardens
is the venue
for countless
major events
particularly
during the
Upper Gardens
school summer holidays, including the Kids
Fun Festival when jugglers, stilt-walkers, facepainters
Candlelight Nights
On Wednesday nights 27th July, 3rd ,10th and 24th
tiny candles, a 100 year-old tradition.
Garden Experiences
Free concerts often take place in the bandstand -
relax in a deckchair on the manicured lawns, icecream
in hand, and enjoy! An aviary is open year
Pinewalk art exhibition takes place during the
history of the gardens. Huge California redwoods,
Scots Pine, Chusan Palms and River Birch trees
are just some of the species you’ll encounter, but
there are also thousands of floral displays
throughout the year.
Bournemouth’ (Westover Road) to stroll around,
The shopping area begins at Old Christchurch Road
and stretches down to the Central Gardens, then
trails up Commercial Road to The Triangle. High
street stores line this popular shopping route along
Westbourne
with al fresco cafes, restaurants and bars - perfect
for a well-deserved lunch break to rest the
weariest of feet.
Boutique Heaven
Head slightly out of town to Westbourne, a unique
little shopping area with boutiques and individual
fashions, paired with delicious delis, wine bars and
cafes. Westbourne is often described as one of the
most fashionable areas in Bournemouth and with its
unique mix of clothing shops and dining experiences
it’s easy to see why.
Antiques Markets
Why not head to Boscombe or Southbourne for a
more relaxed shopping experience? Boscombe has
recently been redeveloped and with a funky seafront
to match, it’s a great alternative. Its well known
antiques markets are great for those secret finds and
one-off wonders.
Bournemouth
For an out-of-town experience hop in the car or take
Out &About
Bournemouth makes the perfect base for
exploring the beauty of Dorset and beyond.
Head inland to stunning thatched-cottage
villages, absorb the rich history of
Christchurch, Salisbury, Poole and
Shaftesbury or get back to nature in the
beautiful New Forest - they’re all within
quick and easy reach for a day out.
Poole
Just five miles west, close neighbour
Poole is a short bus or boat trip from
Bournemouth and a perfect
compliment to the resort, with its
smuggling and piracy history.
Every Tuesday evening from April to
September, hundreds of shiny
motorbikes roar into the Quay. On
Fridays the Quay’s packed with petrolheads,
displaying their treasured cars -
open top sports cars, Lotus 7s and mini
nights are among the car marques taking
place for 2011.
Families visiting on Thursday nights in July
are treated to a feast of free fireworks,
there’s family entertainment, live bands and
a friendly party atmosphere, better still,
it won’t cost a penny.
Jurassic Coast
Head west of Bournemouth with a drive
up the Jurassic Coast - nothing short of
a photographer’s dream. A 95 mile
World Heritage Site, it encompasses
iconic Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and
Dancing Ledge. Weymouth plays host
to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games’ sailing events, but don’t get
too caught up with the excitement to
miss its vibrant harbour and popular beach.
Dorchester nestles between Bridport and
Weymouth, an historic market town, best known for
its most famous resident Thomas Hardy. It boasts a
Roman amphitheatre and some of the county’s best
cream teas!
Christchurch
Bournemouth’s other neighbour to the east is
Christchurch, boasting a clutch of stylish boutiques,
ancient pubs and popular wine bars and cafes. If
you’re a history buff, Christchurch Priory is
unmissable. Dating back to the 11th century, it was
built inside a Saxon fort. You can still see the castle
walls, the outline of the moat and stone keep. It’s
free entry and open year round.
Mudeford Quay sits at the entrance to Christchurch
Harbour and splits into two areas. Quay Head is the
hub for visitors, home to a cluster of historic
buildings - don’t miss Haven Cottages c. 1695.
Fishing continues to thrive, demonstrated by the
lobster pots, fishing boats and fish stall. The beaches
at Avon and Friars Cliff are easily accessed
from the Quay via Gundimore Promenade
which extends eastwards from the Quay.
New Forest
Near to Christchurch, the roaming deer and
wild ponies of the New Forest are heartmelting.
Once the royal playground of William
the Conqueror, pretty villages like Burley and
Brockenhurst are within easy reach.
Whatever the season, whatever the weather,
there are castles, markets, cathedrals and a
magical land- and sea-scape just a stone’s
throw from Bournemouth. Your problem
will be squeezing them in.
Fleet Air Arm Museum
Where museum meets theatre.
As much an ‘attraction’ as it is a ‘museum’, the Fleet Air Arm Museum
is where museum meets theatre. You’ll ‘fly’ by helicopter to the replica
flight deck of the aircraft carrier HMS ARK ROYAL where you‘ll see
fighter aircraft and two enormous projection screens showing a Phantom
interceptor fighter and a Buccaneer strike bomber. You’ll even see a
nuclear bomb.
The Museum has the largest collection of Naval aircraft anywhere in
Europe and the first British built Concorde. Go on-board and visit the
cockpit.
There is a ‘Mini Marines’ adventure playground, a licensed restaurant
and a shop, ample free parking and excellent disabled access.
The Museum is located alongside Europe’s busiest military air station
