<strong>Position</strong>: <strong>School</strong> <strong>Counselor</strong><br />
Reports To: Principal and/or Counseling Supervisor<br />
Purpose:<br />
To promote student success through the implementation of a comprehensive counseling program that<br />
addresses the needs of students in the areas of personal-social growth, educational planning, and career<br />
and vocational development.<br />
Duties and Responsibilities: Additional Duties may be assigned.<br />
1. Major Function: Program Planning<br />
The school counselor establishes the school counseling program and develops activities and resources to<br />
implement and evaluate the program. The school counselor involves other school staff in making<br />
decisions about the school counseling program.<br />
2. Major Function: Counseling<br />
The school counselor provides individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental,<br />
preventive and remedial needs of students.<br />
3. Major Function: Consulting<br />
The school counselor consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community<br />
personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.<br />
4. Major Function: Coordinating<br />
The school counselor coordinates all counseling services for students and assists with the coordination<br />
and implementation of student services in the school. The counselor also assists teachers with the<br />
Guidance Curriculum.<br />
5. Major Function: Student Appraisal<br />
The school counselor accurately interprets test results and other student data. The counselor also assists<br />
teachers with the educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment<br />
strategies.<br />
6. Major Function: Professional Practices and Development<br />
The school counselor adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession, and abides by the laws,<br />
policies, and procedures that govern the schools. The counselor also participates in professional<br />
associations and upgrades professional knowledge and skills when needed.<br />

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:<br />
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions,<br />
and procedure manuals consistent with the duties of this position<br />
• Ability to compose and write routine reports consistent with the duties of this position<br />
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff and the<br />
general public consistent with the duties of this position<br />
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:<br />
Language Skills-Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional<br />
journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business<br />
correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to<br />
questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.<br />
Mathematical Skills-Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical<br />
inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such<br />
as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.<br />
Reasoning Ability-Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in<br />
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in<br />
written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.<br />
Computer Skills-Familiarity with basic computer operation and software. Ability to learn various<br />
computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in<br />
classroom instruction.<br />
Work Environment-The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee may<br />
encounter, and include a noise level that is usually moderate to loud. The employee continuously<br />
interacts with the public and staff. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with<br />

Other-Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan<br />
and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to<br />
whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents;<br />
skill in oral and written communication.<br />
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:<br />
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The<br />
employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally<br />
required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required by this job include<br />
close vision, color vision, and depth perception. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs. such as to<br />
lift files and paper.<br />
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:<br />
• Masters in <strong>School</strong> Counseling.<br />
