Welcome to POWER-GEN Europe
Nigel Blackaby, Conference Director, POWER-GEN Europe
4 www.powergeneurope.com
Dear Colleagues,
It gives me great pleasure to share with you the conference programme for POWER-GEN Europe 2012 and to
cordially invite you to Cologne this coming June for the 20th staging of this important annual industry event.
The conference Advisory Board has chosen ‘Integrating the Power Sector’ as its theme for this year’s event and
has been working closely with the Boards for the two co-located events, Renewable Energy World Europe and
Nuclear Power Europe to create a unique conference that truly addresses this highly topical and crucial subject.
Addressing the challenges of integrating the fast growing amount of intermittent and distributed generation
capacity into the existing power system is a high priority for the industry. It has big implications for grid system
operation, the exibility of existing and new generation and storage technologies. Plus, integration is one of the
main themes of European power policy as the Commission strives to build a single European power market.
Alongside this theme, POWER-GEN Europe can be relied upon to deliver strategic and technical conference
sessions across all aspects of fossil fuel technology, with considerable emphasis on emissions control and
eciency in plant operation. With delegates also entitled to attend sessions in the Renewable Energy World
Europe and Nuclear Power Europe conferences, these three days represent a truly comprehensive insight into the
operation of the power industry of today and tomorrow.
Bringing the industry together to exchange views, learn lessons and encounter new technologies and
experiences is the primary goal of POWER-GEN Europe. Both the conference and exhibition oor attract the
industry’s leading professionals and key decision makers, whose innovation and expertise are helping to shape
the future of power production and usage. Our Keynote this year features viewpoints from leading gures from
the European Commission, Pan-European utility E.ON and global equipment and services supplier Siemens. The
not-to-be missed Plenary debate will see ‘Hardtalk’s’ Stephen Sackur grilling a panel of power industry bosses
over the wisdom or otherwise of Germany’s strategy for its electricity sector.
While the current tough economic conditions across Europe are undoubtedly constraining growth, an aging
power plant infrastructure, the need to decarbonise the sector to comply with European directives and the
pressures of operating in competitive cross-border markets mean that new investments in generation and more
ecient plant operation continue to be made. For those serious about making the most eective investments or
getting the best out of their plant and equipment, a visit to POWER-GEN Europe is a must.
In this Pre-Show Guide you will nd the full conference programme for POWER-GEN Europe and the summary
grids for Renewable Energy World Europe and Nuclear Power Europe. Each event website will post any changes
or additions to the programmes:
www.powergeneurope.com
www.renewableenergyworld-europe.com
www.nuclearpower-europe.com
The guide also provides details of the exhibiting companies, networking opportunities, available technical plant
tours and details of how to register to attend POWER-GEN Europe as a delegate or visitor. Watch out for the
special Earlybird rates and the programme for utility company employees.
I hope you will be able to join the 15,000 power industry professionals that will gather in Cologne 12-14 June and
be part of our 20-year celebration. Back in Paris where it all started for POWER-GEN Europe in 1993, ‘integration’
was also on the agenda but in that case it was co-ordination between Eastern and Western European utilities,
following the break-up of the Soviet Empire. Some things change, but POWER-GEN Europe continues to remain
in the forefront of debate and technology for our industry.
Kind regards,
Nigel Blackaby
Conference Director, POWER-GEN Europe

Welcome to POWER-GEN Europe
Thorsten Herdan, Managing Director, VDMA Power Systems
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of VDMA Power Systems, the German information and communication platform for the
manufacturers of gas and steam turbines, engine systems, hydropower, wind energy plants as well as fuel cells,
we would like to invite you to the 20th POWER-GEN Europe and it’s co-located events in Cologne.
The further development of power systems will be characterised by growth: The global demand for energy
will continue to grow, as will the world-wide demand for ecient and environmentally-friendly energy
technologies. According to the VDMA power mix study, it can be expected that the construction of 800 GW of
new electricity generating capacity will be needed in Europe alone in the period leading up to 2030. This will
provide an ideal basis for the successful transformation of the European electricity market.
This need for new construction will require investment of more than €1000 billion over the next 20 years and
will represent excellent growth opportunities for the industry.
However, this also highlights the industry’s responsibility towards the provision of cost-ecient and futureorientated
solutions. The VDMA experts’ forecast emphasizes the necessity of making use of all available energy
sources and technologies. During the period up to 2030, renewable energy’s share of the European electricity
generation mix will triple in comparison to 2007, from 16 per cent to 48 per cent. This will be backed by a supply
mix in which 33% of the total demand for electricity is supplied by fossil-fuel power plants with a further 19 per
cent being supplied by nuclear plants in order to ensure European supplies in the long-term.
However this ambitious development will only be possible with the expansion of the use of renewable energy
sources as well as new build ecient and exible conventional power plants. The development of new storage
methods to cover uctuations in generation will also be needed. Furthermore, it will be necessary to decisively
drive forward the conversion of the electricity supply grid, speed up permitting procedures and increase energy
eciency in the various European economies. Only in this way security of electricity supply can be assured in
Europe in the long term.
Ultimately, however, the development of an electricity mix will be inuenced principally by the energy-policy
parameters and market design within individual EU member states as well as the legal framework specied by
the EU as a whole. EU energy-policy parameters must be consistent in their formulation.
In order to meaningfully discuss potential future technical trends and solutions, the industry needs a platform,
which is widely accepted and well recognized by all stakeholders. In 2012, the co-located POWER-GEN Europe,
Renewable Energy World Europe and Nuclear Power Europe events once again provide the premier European
platform for the energy industry. The number of exhibitors already committed to a presence this year conrms
this view. We wish all exhibitors and visitors a successful conference and exhibition this year, interesting
discussions and contacts and, above all, a good business.
Kind regards,
Thorsten Herdan
Twenty years of
evolution
in the European power industry
As POWER-GEN Europe celebrates its 20th anniversary, Nigel Blackaby, PennWell’s
International Conference Director, considers the major trends shaping the European power
industry’s past, present and future.
Signicant transformation has epitomized the power industry over the
past two decades. Looking back, industry commentators agree the
most signicant trend has been the industries shift from being largely
state-owned, centrally-controlled and dominated by large integrated
companies to that of a liberalized environment.
Some would suggest that this has led to lower prices for the consumer
and the introduction of eciencies into the marketplace. Others would
argue that energy costs for consumers have actually risen, that there
continues to be a lack of transparency and that wider market uncertainty
still hampers investment in plant and infrastructure.
Nevertheless, unbundling of generation, transmission, distribution
and supply (retail), as well as the creation of energy trading markets
has driven eciencies into the marketplace, primarily in respect of
technology eciencies and lower wholesale prices via energy trading.
Specically, combined-cycle gas turbine generation has blossomed, with
major advances in eciency and size.
Meanwhile, the landmark Kyoto Agreement of 1997 and the EU 2020
targets established in 2007/8 have driven a major and long-lasting shift
in focus to addressing concerns around CO2 and greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions. Renewable energy legislation has been enacted in a number of
European countries, prompting an increase in the number of wood- and
biomass-burning plants, as well as greater interest in carbon capture and
storage (CCS) technology. There has also been the rapid development of
solar and wind energy.
Facing fresh challenges
Major players are already moving to green energy and have accepted they
must now build power plants on the basis of clean power. The utilities
also recognize renewables, especially wind and solar, as being the way
forward. However, regulatory boundaries continue to change in respect
of GHG emission restrictions, rights and fees; the price and availability
of fuels; and the opposing positions being taken on development of
nuclear since Fukushima. There is also the challenge of integrating the
increasing amount of renewables into the electricity system and the
6 www.powergeneurope.com
operational issues these create – from frequency and voltage stability to
provision of reserve. Storage of energy and conversion from one type to
another – e.g. wind to water storage, wind to hydrogen and electricity to
heat – will therefore be hugely important.
There is also the issue of expanding the grid and deploying new
transmission lines to accommodate renewables, especially oshore
renewables that are located quite some distance from the grid load site.
Obtaining the necessary permits and public acceptance is currently
proving dicult. Similarly, doubts persist as to whether CCS is a realistic
option, given public opposition to transporting CO2 via pipeline and storing
it underground. Using excess energy from solar or wind to transform CO2
into methane provides a viable alternative. Meanwhile, ue gas cleaning
will remain an important aspect of the clean energy mix.
A secure, sustainable and least-cost electricity system
Certainly, deregulation, the green agenda and integration of renewables
such as wind and solar into the electricity system bring fresh challenges,
but they also create exciting new opportunities, as do increasingly rapid
advances in plant, storage and smart grid technologies. Moving forward,
the industry must look much more closely at the energy mix and other
technologies to emerge. Eectively, what’s needed is system exibility in
terms of both fuels and outputs.
Moreover, both government and industry must work together to better
communicate the need for technology development in general –
including nuclear, shale gas, CCS and coal – to gain public acceptance
of the necessity of these technologies to sustaining our way of life and
preserving the planet.
Against a backdrop of greater demand for energy from emerging markets
and a gradual rise in economic activity globally, it is more important than
ever that all stakeholders pull together to nd a solution to delivering
a secure, sustainable and least-cost electricity system. Ultimately, all
investments in the power sector are long-term and will feed through to the
consumer. Therefore clarity regarding long-term strategies of regulators
together with improved transparency for consumers must be achieved.

Beyond 60% – pioneering H-class
efficiency with world class flexibility
www.siemens.com/energy
Tried, tested, and proven under real operating conditions
in Irsching, Germany, the new SCC5-8000H single-shaft
power plant with the innovative Siemens SGT5-8000H
gas turbine has set a pioneering world record for combined
cycle plants – with an energy efficiency of over 60 percent.
Environmentally responsible power generation
With its extra two percentage points of efficiency compared
to standard F-series combined-cycle power plants,
every SCC5-8000H single-shaft power plant prevents
approximately 43,000 metric tons of carbon-dioxide
emissions annually.
Highest customer value
Siemens plant solutions provide an optimal balance
between capital costs, plant performance, and operational
and maintenance considerations. Thanks to its fully aircooled
design, the SGT-8000H series gas turbine features
the highest possible reliability and availability, drastically
reducing life-cycle costs. The Benson HRSG achieves steam
temperatures of 600 °C required to break through the
60 % efficiency barrier. As a result, single-shaft SCC-8000H
series power plants offer you maximum value and long-term
investment security.
and using CO2 at this plant and in its technology. Research and development projects form an important
component in the company’s CO2 climate-protection strategy. The Niederaussem location is thus becoming
a “Coal Innovation Centre”. This is where experts are gaining valuable insights that can be ported to other
projects and plants. This is also where RWE Power proposes to step up our exchanges with the international,
specialist community. The participants registered to attend this tour will visit the interactive exhibition in RWEs
information center and the rst lignite based power plant with optimized plant technology (“BoA”) located in
Bergheim Niederaußem. This guided tour will take approx. 2.5 hrs.
Attendees are required to wear sensible casual clothing.
Technical Tour 2:
Windtest Grevenbroich Technical Tour
Owner/Operator: Windtest Grevenbroich
Date: Monday 11 June 2012
Meeting Time: 08:30am
Meeting Point: North Entrance Foyer, Kolnmesse
Duration: Approximately 5 hours
Cost: €90
Since 1998 Windtest Grevenbroich GmbH has operated a test eld for wind energy systems on the Neurather
Höhe hill south of Grevenbroich near Neuss. It is the largest inland test eld in the world.
Prototypes and test systems with a capacity of 600 kW to 2,500 kW are currently tested there and measured
according to international standards. After completion of the work, the systems are dismantled and replaced
by new prototypes.
Clients and owners of the wind energy systems are generally the manufacturing companies. Windtest
Grevenbroich GmbH provides the test eld with the necessary infrastructure, the measuring technology and
the services. The collected data from various measurements, such as stresses, performance curves or electrical
characteristics, are used by the system manufacturers to optimize the components as well as the mechanical,
dynamic or electrical characteristics of their wind energy systems.

For its 20th anniversary year, POWER-GEN Europe will, for the rst time, install a digital screen network,
All 4 screens will display a carefully selected mixture of live coverage, twitter feeds, breaking show
news and timetable information. Throughout the length of the show there will be a strictly limited
number of opportunities for companies to enhance their presence at the show by taking one of two
bespoke commercial airtime packages.
All company messages will be displayed in full colour with audio, and due to the exible nature of
Press Oce, PR & Social Networking
PennWell Corporation has appointed Aspectus PR, a dedicated public
relations consultancy, and its German partner agency HFN, to promote
POWER-GEN Europe and its co-located events Renewable Energy World
Europe and Nuclear Power Europe. Their objective is to gain as much
publicity as possible for the show and promote your organisation’s
presence at the event. The closer you work with them the more likely
the event will be a success for you. DON’T MISS OUT – it doesn’t cost you
anything and there are many dierent ways exhibitors can get involved
in the PR campaign including:
By-lined opinion articles
There are a number of European publications that are keen to
receive by-lined articles from exhibitors in all languages. If you send
us an 800-1000 word article we will try to place it for you. For us to
successfully place your articles they will need to be opinion based and
non-company or product-centric. For style guidelines please contact
Aspectus PR.
Quotes for your press releases
If you are sending out a press release and would like to include a quote
from someone at the event such as keynote speakers or the organisers
of the event Aspectus can help get an appropriate expert to provide
comment.
In-house publications
If you run an in-house publication and would like to publish a preview
of the show alongside what you will be doing at the event to distribute
internally or to your clients and partners, Aspectus can assist with
content, logos and images.
Press Room
Exhibitors can display press kits, releases and notices in the press room
during the event. Please bear in mind that most journalists prefer to
receive press packs on a memory stick or CD so they don’t have to carry
heavy materials around with them.
The press room is for the sole use of visiting journalists, who will be
given details of all press conferences or other planned press events
Aspectus PR is made aware of. If your organisation is planning any press
activity at the event please ensure you inform Aspectus PR as soon as
possible.
Social Media
Our PR campaign is geared towards achieving the highest possible
search engine ranking for the show and related searches. With Google
now arguably the most important business tool on the planet,
leveraging social media and social networking opportunities to ensure
our communications reach the widest possible audience is an essential
aspect of the PR campaign.
