From the Head of College
Feast of the Assumption
Yesterday the College community celebrated Mass for the
Feast of the Assumption. On November 1, 1950 Pope Pius XII
declared, “ …that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin
Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed
body and soul into heavenly glory”.
As we celebrate this important feast day of Mary, we ask her to
guide, protect and care for us.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace.
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy
womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Welcome to Diocese of Bathurst Catholic Education Office
and Primary School Staff
Today Stannies welcomed staff from the Catholic Education Office
Bathurst and teachers from Catholic schools in Bathurst and
surrounding areas. They were participating in a Contemporary
Learning Conference held in Stannies Performing Arts Centre.
Working with Dr Julia Atkin, who has been at the forefront
of promoting new approaches to learning, the participants
addressed ways develop within young people the capacity to be
critical thinkers and independent learners.
Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations
The Year 12 students have responded well to the rigours and
challenges of their Trial HSC examinations, some doing two
lengthy exams in the one day. They return to classes from
Period 1 Wednesday and over the next five weeks they will
work with their teachers in evaluating their performance in
the Trial examinations and continuing to prepare for the HSC
examinations commencing in October.
Year 12 parents will receive a letter in the next few days providing
details about the Year 12 Graduation Mass and dinner as well
as other arrangements for the remainder of Year 12 time at the
College.
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews and Year 9 and 11
Information Sessions
Thank you to the many families who attended the interviews
and information sessions last Sunday and to the teachers who
were present on the day. This was a very valuable opportunity
for feedback, evaluation, advice and planning. We welcome
feedback from parents as we turn very quickly to commence
planning for these sessions in 2014.
Fathers Day Mass and Breakfast
Thank you to the many families who have already responded
to the invitation to attend the annual Father’s Day Mass and
Breakfast. Some have queried the date change, the simple
explanation is that Fr Doug and Fr Jim will be away from the
College throughout the following week attending the annual
gathering of the Vincentian priests from Australia and the
Pacific.
We would appreciate families letting us know well ahead of time
if they are attending. Depending on numbers we will have the
Mass either in the Chapel or the PAC. We would like to be well
prepared for this decision.
Rugby Congratulations
Congratulations to the players, coach (Mr Melville) and parent
supporters for the wonderful success of the 14As in 2013.
They triumphed as undefeated 2013 ISA Champions. This is
a wonderful achievement - we look forward to watching their
progress in 2014!
Year 10 End of Year Program 2013
Over the last few months Mr Elliott and the Pastoral Care team
have been reviewing arrangements for the conclusion of Year 10
and preparations for Year 11.
This year, as a part of inducting Year 10 into the ‘Senior School’,
the students will be involved in a range of activities targeted at
preparing them for their senior studies. In previous years, many
students have found the transition from Year 10 to Year 11 to
be an extremely difficult challenge. This program is designed to
equip the students with many of the skills necessary to ‘hit the
ground running’ as they enter Year 11.
Year 10 students and parents will receive a letter early next week
detailing the arrangements in place for the last weeks of Year 10.
All Year 11, 2014 students will be expected to participate in the
complete program.
From The Director of Curriculum
YEAR 9 2014 ELECTIVE CHOICE & YEAR 11 2014 COURSE SELECTION
The elective subject selection forms for Year 9 and the course selection forms for Year 11 are due back from all students to the Director of
Curriculum’s office by Monday 19th August. The information from these forms will contribute to important decisions regarding staffing and
the setting of subject lines. The school aims to confirm all elective and course choices with students and parents during Term 4, with Year 10
2013 students finalising their choices with individual interviews with staff at the end of Term 3 prior to Work Experience (parents are most
welcome- all dates will be published in the newsletter). Our aim is to run all the courses listed on the form, but particular courses may not run
if they fail to attract sufficient numbers. The Junior Curriculum Handbook and Senior Curriculum Handbook can be found in the curriculum
section of www.stannies.com where more detailed information can be accessed about each course.
We are keen to complete this initial survey of options to prepare the 2014 timetable and the avoidance of subject clashes for students. There will
be a further request for Year 11 subjects on set subject lines later in Term 3 following our initial survey. If you have any other questions regarding
these matters, please ring me on 0438314199.
Rugby
14As RUGBY REPORT
COACH: Geoff Melville
OPPONENT: St Pius X College
BEST FORWARD: Jesse Gauci
BEST BACK: Harry Brown
SCORE: 34-7
SCORERS: Tries: Jerome Arrow (2), Anthony Taylor, Will Weldon,
Jesse Stevens, Lachlan Melville. Conversions: Will Weldon (2)
Coach’s Report: During Term 4 2012 and Term 1 this year, a band of
young men decided to train most Friday afternoons (foregoing the
opportunity to walk through shopping centres, buying lollies and
meeting nice young ladies) in preparation for the 2013 rugby season.
At fulltime against St Pius X on Saturday, the 14As celebrated a hard
fought 34-7 win and achieved many highlights to be remembered
for some time:
• The first Stannies team to win a 14A ISA premiership since
the school’s entry into the Association in 1996. The 14A’s were
undefeated in the 2013 competition.
• During the ISA competition, points scored 260, against 32
(tries for 42, against 6). Each player in the team scored a try in
2013, Jesse Stevens and Jerome Arrow scored 12 each.
• Strong wins as well in 2013 against Central West (2013 Country
Champions), Trinity Grammar, Newington College and a 12-
10 loss to The Kings School.
Stannies scored six tries against St Pius, with each score typifying
aspects of their fine play this year- tries to wingers Anthony Taylor
and Will Weldon came from the constructive use of the blind side
by crisp passing starting with the half Harry Brown; individual tries
to Jesse Stevens and Lachlan Melville outlined their athleticism
and class; and the two tries to Jerome Arrow from close range
demonstrated what a threat his great strength and speed are to the
opposition (has any other forward scored 12 tries this year?!).
Stannies again played as a united team, with all members providing
a vital contribution. Harry Brown led the backline brilliantly with
his swift service, this was his best game in 2013, while 5/8 Nick
Smith nearly scored a brilliant try with his customary ‘show and go’.
Centres Jesse Stevens and Daniel Woods were physically imposing
in the mid field, while wingers Will Weldon and Anthony Taylor
always use the sideline expertly in attack and defence. Tom Veitch
had another great game and always shows total courage in contact.
In the forwards, Jesse Gauci led from the front with searching
charges and smashing defence, while his front row partners, Tom
Bartlett and Peter Donato, intimidated their opponents with fair
aggressive contact. In the second row, captain Jake Sullivan made
a welcome return with his strong defence and measured leadership
and Patrick Long continued his brilliant Term 3 form with some
excellent kick-off receptions and breakdown work. The back row
was again outstanding, with Hugh Logan the prime motivator in
the team and always leading by example with non-stop tackling,
while Jerome Arrow and Lachlan Melville are players to watch in the
future as their athletic and technical skills have improved markedly
in 2013.
It has been a great joy to be involved with this champion team and
their fantastic parents. Special mention must be made of Mark
Sullivan and Neil Webb for their expert assistance both on and
off the field. The group will always remember the 2013 season as a
special set of fixtures, where hard work and enthusiasm led to the
ultimate reward for a dedicated band of fine young men.
4th XV RUGBY REPORT
OPPONENT: St Pius X
COACH: Mr Greet
DATE: 10/8/13
BEST FORWARD: Nick Guise
BEST BACK: William Mabior
SCORE: 31-19
Tries: Timtaus Komi, James Gunning, Cody Webb, Robert Edema
James Spora. Conversion: Jared Sheppeard, William Mabior, James
Spora
Coach’s Report: The last game of the season was a chance for the
Year 12s to go out on a high note. It was an opportunity for some of
the long-time injured students to get a final run and to make one last
contribution to a rugby programme they have graced for the last few
years. With little team training, this was a game which was to rely on
the natural talents of the boys rather than a well-planned structure.
The incredible running skills of Tim Komi were the first to be put on
show as he collected a clearance kick and ran it back over half the
length of the field off two monstrous steps. James Gunning, playing
his best game of the year, crossed next after some typical power
and speed from William Mabior. Trea Mongta-Cruse was unlucky
to have a try disallowed after he used his strength to muscle over
tackles. At half-time we led 12-0 and were in control of the game.
In the second half, our illustrious leader, Cody Webb, jinked and
sprinted his way over the line for a score before Pius pulled one back
through some disorganised defence. Robert Edema with his fresh
legs terrorised the defence in the second half and was rewarded by a
characteristically direct run at and over the defenders for a try. The
final try was scored by James Spora who was given space and time
by some more excellent running from the backs, and he needed no
encouragement to charge through the defence. Two late tries from
Pius made the score closer than it should have been, but it was a
fine performance. Although the backs were dominant, the play of the
forwards - Nick Guise (before another injury forced him off), Claude
Macleay, Harrison Faulkner, Andrew Gallagher and the biggest front
row I have seen (Daniel Deng, Andy Stevens and Bryce Tomkins)
– must be celebrated as laying a very solid foundation to allow the
backs to open up. This was a thoroughly enjoyable game to watch
and just desserts for the efforts of many years from this group of
young men.
3rd XV RUGBY REPORT
COACH: Robert Danelon / Murray Hooper
OPPONENT: St Pius 2nds
BEST FORWARD: Kadison Campion
BEST BACK: Bodee Spurway
SCORE: 53-7
Coach’s Report: Coming into the last game of the season the coaches
allowed the players to dictate training throughout the week, to a
certain degree, in the hope that they have matured as players and
therefore as a team . Confidence was not in short supply and with
ample ball and field position we only had to keep ball in hand and
control the breakdown and spread it to our wings. However on
several raids in St Pius’s 22 we were not able to maintain possession
with the line wide open and by not concentrating on proper ball
control kept our opponents in the game. We did however score
3 tries to go in at the break 15-0 up. Much emphasis was put on
winning the breakdown and in doing so playing at the advantage line
or beyond to continually put St Pius on the back foot. There was a
calm and steely nerve when the 2nd half began and the final 30 mins
of football was a wonderful thing. They played for each other and
kept rolling through their opponents with wonderful team play. The
forwards led by Kadison Campion, Jack McKenna, Xavier Giuliano,
Toby Gillespie, Troy Lindsay, Brendan Nelson, Jayden Norris and
- PAGE 5 -

Sports News
Dylan Jones paved the way for the backs with Josh Gemmell being
the perfect link man to Bodee Spurway, Morgan Gleeson, Brodee
Lombe, Andrew Doherty, Bryce Mallon and Curtis Lichtenberger
forever blitzing in defence or attack. Special mention to supersub
Michael Matthews who though injured wanted “ON” to be a part
of the game but after 5 painful minutes came off giving his all. Nine
tries showed the boys that they are capable of wonderful rugby and
had pleasant memories of their last game at St Stanislaus . “WELL
DONE LADS”.
16As RUGBY REPORT
COACH: Mr P. Lewis
OPPONENT: St Pius College16 A’s
DATE: 27-7-13
BEST FORWARD: Dylan Carter
BEST BACK: Alec Corcoran
SCORE: 41: 7 Win
Coach’s Report: Right from the outset the lads piled on the pressure.
Great free running in broken play allowed Alec Corcoran to really
wind up and score a beautiful try just right of the uprights. Play
throughout the first half was dominated by some excellent forward
running. Sam Thomas, Tuppi Taekata and Dylan Carter all linked up
via off loads in the tackle to pick up a good 40m on the fly. William
Whitton and Matthew Brouff also scored brilliant solo tries. Daniel
Donato picked up the rest of the points off his golden boot and the
score line read 36 points to nil by half time.
A rapid brain explosion must have given the Stannies an awe of
invincibility at half time as their second half performance was
lacklustre and poor to say the least. St Pius stepped it up a couple
of notches. A lack of commitment at the breakdown and poor ball
handling skills left Stannies defending for most the half. St Pius took
full advantage of some lazy backline defence and scored under the
posts. This shocked Stannies and to their credit they came back
fighting. A 14 man lineout was the order of the day. It worked well
with the lads rolling a maul 30 meters to score right on the bell. The
unsuccessful but close conversion by Matthew Brouff left the final
score line at 41 – 7. Stannies finished second this year in the ISA to
a rampaging St Augustines. I’m quite confident that if we had more
practice at away games this season, then the result could have gone
our way. In the end the boys had some magnificent wins against
Riverview, Newington, St Edmund’s and most notably Oakhill. Well
done boys on a very successful season.
15Cs RUGBY REPORT
COACH: Stella King, Col Kemp, Phil Le Breton
OPPONENT: St Pius College
BEST FORWARD: James Sherley/Will Fagan
BEST BACK: Tom Duggan
SCORE: Stannies 0 St Pius 49
Coach’s Report: The team was very excited to begin the last game
of the season. After a week of illnesses the boys struggled to find
form. Will McFeeters has been plagued with illness but still gave
his best on the day. Jye Bower and Lachlan Kemp led by example
and continued with a strong defence throughout the game. Ryan
Atkinson was a keen competitor and supported Tom Brown who was
constantly chasing the ball. Tom Duggan was excellent in tackling
and defending. Thank you to our coaches who have developed the
team throughout the season. Outstanding commitment by all team
members who played even whilst sick and injured. Thank You!
Tennis
College Tennis Championships are to be played on Monday and
Thursday afternoons from 3.30 to 5pm at the Stannies courts. Each
year group will play it out as follows:
WEEK 5 - Year 11
WEEK 6 - Year 9
WEEK 7- Year 10
WEEK 8- Year 8
WEEK 9- Year 12
WEEK 10- Year 7
If any student wants to play, bring a tennis racquet and relevant spots
attire. Any questions, please see Mr MacDougall or Mr Kleinschafer.
Week 5 Tennis
This week year 11 battled it out on the courts of the College. A large
number of boys participated and played in good humour and showed
great sportsmanship. One of the semi-finals between Harrison
Evans and Nick Grant was a real battle with perhaps some of the best
tennis we have seen in some years. Eventually Harrison Evans arose
victorious in the Final over an injured, (not really an excuse), Kurt
Waterford. Next week year 9 will do battle. Any interested students
please be at the courts after school on Monday and Thursday.
It’s the question that every parent, especially mothers ask:
“What’s going on with my teenage boy?”
Celia Lashlie, a researcher and social
commentator has some very up front
and clear answers.
In 2004, she completed the Good Man Project. It
created discussion within and between 25 boys’
schools throughout New Zealand to define 'what
makes a good man in the 21st Century’.
The results provided a significant insight into the
minds of teenage boys and what they are feeling
at this period in their lives. In the years since
completing the project, Celia has continued to
work with mothers as they wrestle with the
challenges of parenting their adolescent sons.
Celia has some confronting suggestions for mums
and dads. Her strongest challenge is for women
to rethink the way they interact with the men in
their lives – their sons and their husbands – if
they want to see their sons become the good men
they want them to be.
So, do you want to be a
BLAST Youth Leader in 2013?
Youth Leaders need to be aged from Year 10 (2013) up to 25 years.
Bishop Michael will be attending the weekend, which provides a unique and relaxed
opportunity to get to know him, don’t take this opportunity for granted and
make the most of it.
Important Dates:
August 24th - 25th Retreat at Shalom House, Carcoar - 10am Sat - 2pm Sun
We are aiming at giving you the chance to explore where you are in your own
faith journey and the opportunity, to ask questions (yes, even the hard ones!) in
an environment that is designed to support you no matter what your level of faith.
September 28th - 29th Retreat at Portland Parish Centre, back of St Joseph’s
School Williwa Street 10am Sat - 2pm Sun. This weekend is designed to break
open the actual BLAST weekend and take you through the many aspects of what it
means to be a Youth Leader in charge of a small group. You will also be challenged
by a special visitor, who will be out to show you how physical actions are linked to
our spiritual and mental wellbeing and how you can use this to stretch yourselves
not only in your faith journey, but in the everyday challenges of life.
October 18th BLAST Final Training, Friday 7pm Ridgecrest Convention Centre
Lake Burrendong overlooking Dam Wall. We will review all our plans, skits and
weekend programme, set up spaces and allocate last minute jobs.
October 19th - 20th BLAST
So what do you need to do, right now, to apply for the Youth Leader’s team?
Send your letter of application in at least 25 words about why you want to be a
Youth Leader to: youth@bathurst.catholic.org.au include at least one reference
from either your School Principal or Parish Priest (Vincention Priests in the
case of Stannies). Any Questions? Youth Leaders are available to answer
your questions via email at: coordinator@bathurstcatholicyouth.org or visit
bathurstcatholicyouth.org
Do you want to be a
Member of PPK in 2013?
So you like music and are interested in being a part of Priest Prophet & King the
Diocesan Youth Band (PPK)? As with Youth Leaders, PPK members also need to
be aged from Year 10 (2013) up to 25 years.
Training: There will be some rehearsals once the band members have been
selected. We are fortunate to have some adults in our group of volunteers who
help with the rehearsals and training. The dates are usually set in agreeance with
all the members.
October 18th BLAST Final Training
Friday 5pm Ridgecrest Convention Centre. Lake Burrendong overlooking Dam
Wall. The band members usually try to get to Ridgecrest a little earlier on the
Friday so they can have final rehearsals. However, this again is at the agreeance
of the band.
October 19th - 20th BLAST
One of the things you may not be aware of is that at events like BLAST the team
pays their own way. Unfortunately the cost associated with such an event does not
allow for the Diocese to pay for all the volunteers necessary to make it happen.
This means that you will also have to pay for registration for Blast ($100). In most
cases parishes will be able to help out and subsidise some or all of your costs, so
don’t be shy and ask your Parish Priest to help you out.
So what do you need to do, right now, to apply for PPK?
Send your letter of application in at least 25 words about why you want to be a
member of PPK to Lorna at youth@bathurst.catholic.org.au include at least one
reference from either your School Principal or Parish Priest (Vincention Priests
in the case of Stannies). Any Questions? Youth Leaders are available to answer
your questions via email at: coordinator@bathurstcatholicyouth.org or visit
bathurstcatholicyouth.org
