Headteacher: Neil Hemming BA (Hons) MA (Ed)
Deputy Headteacher: Elizabeth Dakin BSoc Sci (Hons)
Dear Parent
Welcome back to the new term and all best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2013.
Public Examinations
The next round of public examinations is already upon us. We wish all good luck to our
students across Years 11 to 13 as they sit their module examinations over the coming weeks.
If you have a particular query with regard to an examination, please be in touch with
Mrs Threadgold, our Examinations Officer.
Please note, we have a team of invigilators and support staff who live in Wem and who can
come in to school on foot even in very severe weather conditions. We will therefore do our
very utmost to ensure that public examinations do go ahead whatever the weather!
Please listen to Radio Shropshire from 7.15am for the latest information if the weather takes
a turn for the worse!
Year 13
To date 100+ UCAS applications have been submitted. The start of term marks the last few
days before the deadline for any remaining UCAS applications and is therefore a potentially
very busy time for College staff as students’ personal statements are checked through and
references written.
Naturally the January/February modules are particularly important for our Year 13 as they
look to create a strong academic springboard in order to succeed in gaining a place on their
preferred course at university: we wish them all good luck.
Year 12
Hardly having had time to draw breath since their GCSEs, our Year 12 students now embark
on their next set of public examinations. Again, we wish them all good luck and hope that they
are able to do themselves justice.
Year 11
With their GCSE mocks sat before Christmas, it is now time to take stock as we prepare for
the completion of coursework and controlled tests before the start of revision for the public
examinations this Summer. The following are key dates:
• Year 11 Parents Evening – Tuesday 15 January 2013, 4.30pm – 7.30pm
• GCSE Preparation and Revision Evening for Parents: the Countdown begins! – Wednesday
30 January 2013, 7.30pm, Drama Studio

Year 11 contd
Science: the start of term is very important with regard to preparation for GCSE Science.
The vast majority of the cohort will sit their GCSE additional Science on Tuesday 22 January
(am). Meanwhile, a few of Year 11 who missed their GCSE Science in Year 10 will sit that on
Thursday 17 January (pm).
There are also other module examinations, across various other subject areas such as History
and Business Studies, which will be sat by relatively smaller numbers of Year 11 students
during the January public examination session. These should appear on your son’s/
daughter’s examination timetable. Certainly if you have a query with regard to these public
examinations, we would urge you to contact Mrs Threadgold, our Examinations Officer, in the
first instance.
Year 11 course choices for September 2013: we are attempting to confirm our post-16
curriculum for Adams College as early as possible this term. We would therefore ask that
options’ forms are handed in as soon as possible to Student Reception or Mr Hemming/
Mrs Dakin.
Parents of Year 11 students, together with their son/daughter, will be given the opportunity
to make an appointment later on this term to talk through with a senior member of staff on
an individual basis about subject choices for next year.
Year 11 2011-12: GCSE English re-sits – December results: We felt vindicated when our
students’ GCSE English resit results were released shortly before Christmas. If you recall, last
Summer witnessed a national grading fiasco in English with exam boards increasing
boundaries for a C grade by up to 10 marks after some students had already sat the paper in
January. Of 23 of our students re-entered for their GCSE English, 20 secured a ‘C’ or better
in their November resit. This now puts our English department’s ‘C grade or better’ pass rate
at 79% for our 2011-12 Year 11 cohort and points to a ‘5+ A*-C including English and Maths’
of 70%, which coincides with predictions made for that cohort.
However, we should spare a thought for those students, both here locally in Shropshire and
nationally, who were not able to resit because they had taken up apprenticeships or moved on
to other colleges.
Meanwhile, an alliance of schools, students and teaching unions are pinning their hopes on a
positive outcome to the process of judicial review which will continue this month. In a legal
challenge to last Summer’s results, they are urging the High Court to find in their favour and
order a re-grade of last Summer’s papers for all those students who ‘missed out’.
Year 9 Options
This is an important term for our Year 9 students as they begin the process of finalising their
options’ choices in preparation for Key Stage 4 from September 2013.
The Year 9 Parents’ Evening will take place on Wednesday 6 February 2013 from 4.30pm –
7.30pm. Your son/daughter will be provided with a booking form for the evening in order to
allow him/her to make appointments with subject tutors.
The Year 9 Information Evening for parents with regard to options is planned for Wednesday
13 February 2013. This will help explain the process to you and give you the necessary
overview required in order that options’ forms with your son’s/daughter’s subject choices can
be returned by Friday 8 March.

Well done to our Musicians!
The end of last term was particularly hectic for our musicians who where an absolute credit
in their contribution to School events in the run up to the holiday period.
Certainly their contribution to the two Variety Concerts at the Town Hall, as well as the
Christmas Concert at Wem Parish Church, were outstanding. My thanks go to all who
participated as well as Mr Brown and the Music department for providing us with such
quality. We include the programmes for both Variety Concerts and our ‘Celebration of
Christmas’ Concert at the end of this Newsletter.
A Level Reforms from September 2013
You will be aware that education in England is going through a period of considerable reform.
In the short term, with regard to A Level study, this means that from September 2013,
students in England will no longer be able to sit A Level examinations in January.
For students who started a two-year A level course in September 2012, ie current
Year 12:
• AS examinations will be available in January 2013, June 2013 and June 2014. There
will be no AS examinations available in January 2014.
• A2 examinations will be available in January 2013, June 2013 and June 2014. There
will be no A2 examinations available in January 2014.
For students who start a two-year A level course from September 2013, ie current
Year 11:
• AS examinations will be available in June 2014 and June 2015. There will be no AS
examinations available in January 2014.
• A2 examinations will be available in June 2014 and June 2015. There will be no A2
examinations available in January 2014.
Please note: these interim reforms to A level support the following:
• Continuation of students being assessed at the end of each of their first and second
years of study.
• Removal of January exams and reduced resit opportunities.
• Increase in synoptic assessment in A levels.
• Reduction of internal assessment.
Proposed KS4 and KS5 reforms in the medium term
Here I summarise the likely direction of travel in the medium term although this comes with
the usual caveat that at present these are Government proposals, subject to a process of
consultation, and some elements of these proposals may not come to fruition!
At Key Stage 4, Years 10 and 11
The Government is looking to introduce an English Baccalaureate (EBacc) qualification from
2015.
To achieve an English Baccalaureate students will need to achieve English Baccalaureate
Certificates (EBCs) in five of the following subjects (including English, Maths and Science):
• English (Literature or Language)
• Maths (pure or applied)
• Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics)
• History
• Geography
• MFL

Proposed KS4 and KS5 reforms in the medium term (contd)
Who will take the EBacc?
The aspiration is that 90% of students will achieve the EBacc before they leave compulsory
education at 18. It may be that some students take their exams at 16, some at 17 and
others at 18. Students that do not achieve the EBacc will still take EBCs and will be issued
with a Certificate of Achievement.
When will the EBacc start?
• Core subjects (English, Maths, Science) will be taught from 2015 with the first
examination in 2017.
• History, Geography and MFL will be taught from 2016 (subject to consultation).
What will EBCs be assessing?
• Literacy and numeracy levels
• Understanding of subject
• Readiness for further study
How will EBCs be different?
• New grade scales (likely to be 1,2, 3 rather than A, B, C).
• No internal assessment (at least for EBacc subjects).
• No tiering of examination papers.
• Examination aids (calculators, periodic tables, set texts, source material) will be
‘vigorously’ discouraged).
• Opportunities to teach to the test to be removed (limit past papers, mark schemes,
examiners reports, etc).
• No choice of examination boards – each subject will be allocated to a specific board.
• Terminal exams – no modules.
Key Stage 5 – Years 12 and 13
What is the Secretary of State proposing?
• A review of A Levels
• Introduction of the Advanced Baccalaureate (AB)
• AS to be a separate exam – an alternative to A level, not the first part of a KS5
qualification.
What would the AB consist of?
• A group of ‘contrasting’ subjects, with breadth (so a student wouldn’t study all arts
or all Sciences).
• At least two subjects from the following list drawn up by Russell Group Universities:
o Maths
o Further Maths
o English Literature
o Physics
o Biology
o Chemistry
o Geography
o History
o Modern or Classical Languages
• A 5,000 word extended essay.
• Terminal exams (no modules).
• An element of volunteering.

Proposed KS4 and KS5 reforms in the medium term (contd)
I believe that parents should rest assured that Thomas Adams is in a very strong position to
be able to maintain the breadth and balance of its curriculum. This will allow it to continue
to develop the skills and talents of its students, whether they are suited to the more
‘traditional’ subject areas which are highlighted in the Government’s proposals or indeed
those subject areas such as the arts, which fall outside the Government’s proposals.
Sports
In spite of the frustrations caused by what was a particularly damp term, our sportsmen
and women soldiered on bravely. My thanks go to a team of highly-committed PE staff who
gave ‘above and beyond’ during the term. Highlights of the term include:
• The visit of Tom Davies as part of Sky’s ‘Living for Sport’ programme. Tom, who is an
England judoist and 81kg Commonwealth and British champion, gave a series of
motivational and inspirational talks and led students through practical judo sessions.
Students involved included a range of examination students who are taking GCSE,
BTEC level 2 and BTEC level 3 qualifications. The day also served to fulfil the PE
department’s aim of continuing the Olympic legacy.
• The visit to Twickenham in November by some of our rugby
players, from across Years 7 to 10, to watch England versus
Fiji.
• The School’s participation in Project Ability. This culminated
in a wheelchair basketball festival in November at which three of
our students officiated as ‘Wheelchair Basketball Young Officials’.
Meanwhile the Thomas Adams wheelchair basketball team came a
highly commendable second, just missing out by one point in the
festival’s final.
• Under 14 North Shropshire Badminton Doubles Championships: the event proved a
huge success for Thomas Adams with the Boys’ team finishing second and the Girls’
team winning their competition.
• Shropshire U16 Girls’ football: congratulations to Lucy Brown and Danni Prince who are
stalwarts of the Shropshire squad.
• Shropshire U14 Boys’ football: congratulations to Joe Kinsella, Michael Owen and James
Arrowsmith who have been selected for the County squad to play Cardiff in early
January.
• Shropshire Schools Cross Country: congratulations to Tom Garbett and Jason
Glennester who were selected for the County team in November.
• The success of Bokwa! Students participated in a sponsored
two hour non-stop Bokwa-thon to raise money for our ever
popular Dance Academy. The students raised nearly £400.
• Primary Tag Rugby Festival: our thanks go to the Year 11
BTEC Sports’ Studies students who helped make the Festival such a resounding success
for the primary school children.

Sports (contd)
• North Shropshire Swimming Gala: a swimming squad of some 19 students represented
the School at the gala with star performances coming from Alexander Cooper, Antoinette
Greenwood, Annabel Cook and James Cook. Well done!
• Under 16 North Shropshire Badminton Doubles Championships: both the Boys’ and the
Girls’ teams finished third overall from the many teams which participated.
• Under 18 Girls’ Shropshire Football Tournament: the Adams College team progressed to
the Final beating the likes of SCAT on the way before narrowly losing to Thomas Telford:
a brilliant effort!
• Climbing Club: an enthusiastic group of climbers visited the rock climbing facility at
Newport to experience advanced rock climbing at first hand.
• Further Education/Higher Education West Midlands Rugby 7s Tournament at
Kingswinford: Thomas Adams recorded one win (against local Shropshire rivals, Idsall)
and two losses in a competition which included a range of independent and state
colleges.
• Post-16 Boys’ County League fixture (football) versus Madeley Academy: Adams College
1 (Jack Nixon) – 0 Madeley Academy. The Post-16 boys went out in the second round of
the County Cup at Thomas Telford, while the Year 10 boys exited at the quarter-final
stage of their County Cup competition.
• Years 7, 8 and 9 Netball fixtures against Adcote: Year 7 girls had an impressive win
beating the Adcote girls 5-1. The Year 8 and 9 teams did not fair as well, both losing.
• Introduction of Lacrosse: our PE department has been working with colleagues at
Moreton Hall near Oswestry. This led last term to Lacrosse sessions for some of our boys
and girls.
Senior Citizens’ Party
Our sixth formers held the
annual senior citizens’
Christmas party on
19 December. The students
received food donations from
the Coop and Fresh Value and
other stores in the town
donated raffle prizes.
The event was very well
attended and lots of positive
feedback has already been
received about the party and
the sixth formers. Well done!
Wem Senior Club
I feel I must mention the following sixth formers from
the College who participated at a home safety event at
the Senior Club last term and who were praised as a
‘real credit to themselves and the School’: Gemma
Exelby, Matthew Macintosh, Frank Edwards, Sophie
Collins, Amy Roberts and Kelsey Gardiner.
Alison Richardson, Preventative Services Development
Officer at Shropshire RCC wrote to me to say: They
were a joy to work with, they helped make tea and
coffee, they were all extremely courteous whilst taking
requests from the members of the Wem Senior Club
who attended the event and they all got stuck in and
did the washing up!
And I wonder if they do the washing up at home too?

Ex-Year 13 Reunion
Our ex-Year 13 students, who had just finished their first term at university, were invited to
a celebratory early-evening event at Wem Town Hall on Wednesday 19 December. The
evening allowed them both to reminisce and to exchange stories of life in their new
institutions.
It was a pleasure to welcome back one of our Adams College alumni, Tommy Gore, as guest
of honour for the event: Tommy having achieved a First at Glasgow University, is now
working in railway management. A commemorative programme of the event is included at
the end of this Newsletter.
One student who wasn’t able to attend the ex-Year 13 event in December was Matisse
Paterson.
Matisee swapped a Shropshire Christmas with her family and friends for an eye-opening
experience working with deprived children in India. The 18 year old from Welshampton, who
is known as Matty, has been working in a girls’ orphanage, cleaning and cooking.
Spending her first Christmas away from parents Ian and Alison, the former student at
Adams College, Wem, flew alone to India at the end of September to spend sixth months
working with deprived children near Delhi.
Mum Alison, who works at Wrights newsagents on Wem High Street, said: “When she
arrived, she was living at an orphanage for girls and helping cleaning and cooking. There
were about 80 girls aged four to 20 and by Indian standards it was quite a privileged place;
the children wore a uniform and the older girls went out to school. It was difficult at first; no
one spoke English at all so Matty was having to mime everything to communicate. It was
very hot, she couldn’t sleep and she had stomach trouble. She’s out there by herself, so I
think the first week was hard.”
Matty has since been transferred to a teaching role by the charity she is working for. “She’s
teaching English to about a dozen five-to-seven year olds in a tent,” said her mother.
Free School Meals (FSM)
Family circumstances are liable to change and particularly so in this time of economic
uncertainty. If your financial circumstances have changed you may now be in a position to
apply for FSM for your child/ children. The following is a guide to whether you may be eligible
to apply: if you are on income support, income based job seekers’ allowance and in some
cases child tax credit, you are probably eligible for free meals for your child.
Remember, too, the School receives additional funding via Pupil Premium for each child
eligible for FSM.
If you have a query with regard to eligibility, you can ring the following
number: 01743 254436 at Shropshire Council.
Friends of Thomas Adams
I continue to be eternally grateful for the efforts of the Friends in raising funds for the School.
My thanks go to Diane Lloyd-Brown and the team for their brilliant work in reinstituting our
Christmas Fayre and raising just over £1000. I am sure that its success will mean it becomes
an annual feature once again on the School Calendar.

is 14 January.
Host Family Required 8-
20 July 2013
We are looking for a host family
for a Swiss boy, Loic Fanichet,
who is 14 years old, and is hoping
to come to Shropshire for two
weeks this summer.
If you feel you may be able to
assist with board and lodging, I
would ask you to be in touch with
Christine Sower on 01743 235653
or email
yes@englishinshropshire.com
Mobile Phones
With approximately 700 of our students dependent on buses for transport to and from
school/ college, we are very much aware of the advantages to be gained by students having
a mobile phone. Certainly parents are reassured if their son/daughter is able to contact
them with regard to transport arrangements after sports’ fixtures, music rehearsals,
revision sessions etc. We try to keep the School’s approach to mobile phones as
straightforward as possible:
• they remain the responsibility of the individual student and the School cannot be held
responsible for loss/damage to them
• they are switched off and ‘out of sight, out of mind’ during the school day
• if a student needs to make/receive an urgent call, this should be done via Pastoral/
Student Reception.
Obviously if any individual is unable to abide by these simple provisions, then he/she may
well lose the right to have a phone (or other such electronic device) in school.
I am pleased to say that this is a policy which has worked extremely well over several years
now and students, to their credit, have responded sensibly to it.

Rotary
Our thanks go to the Wem and District Rotary Club who give generously of their time to
support the School. Local Rotarians last term helped with Year 11 mock interviews,
facilitated a lower school Masterchef competition and very importantly ensured that Santa
was on hand as part of our Christmas festivities.
Masterchef Competition
For the Key Stage 3 Masterchef competition students were given one hour to prepare, cook
and serve two portions of one dish that should be healthy and appetising. All students did
very well and Iain McHardy from the Rotary was very impressed.
The intermediate competition was especially close with 1-2 marks between the winner and
the runner up.
Junior Winner was Lauren Gilling (Year 7) – Soda bread with a vegetable soup; runner up
was Hattie Williams (Year 8) – Lightly battered chicken with a salad and cream dip.
Intermediate winner was Emily Maudsley (Year 9) – Fresh prawn and pea risotto with a
chilli garnish; runner up was Abigail Austin (Year 9) – Chicken Curry with freshly boiled
rice.
The winners will be asked to represent the School in the West Midlands Rotary competition
held this month.
Wem Town Hall
The Town Hall has become an important feature of both School and community life. We
were therefore delighted to learn last term of two important successes:
• Thomas Adams and Wem Town Hall have won investment to deliver the regional British
Film Institute Film Academy for the West Midlands region. We are working with the
University of Wolverhampton on this exciting initiative to help develop the next
generation of British Film industry talent. The initiative is led by the British Film
Institute and supported by BAFTA, Pinewood Studios and the Department of Education
and seeks to support talented, passionate young filmmakers in developing their skills
and exploring career pathways into the world of film and animation.
• Thomas Adams has also won funding from First Light Films for four film productions
with young people over the coming months. These films will involve young people with
learning disabilities as well as those who are gifted and talented. You will appreciate that
this is a very competitive climate for investment and it is heartening that national
funding bodies such as BFI and First Light value so highly the work and the vision of
the School at this time.

Emergency closure procedure
Whenever possible we try to keep school open, but should we be informed that road
conditions are dangerous and buses are unable to run, a decision will be taken to close
school before 7.15am. This information will be broadcast on Radio Shropshire (96FM)
between 7.30 and 8.00am. If the weather deteriorates during the course of the day, and a
decision is taken to close the school, a message will be broadcast over Radio Shropshire. We
will also endeavour to keep you posted via our website: www.thomasadams.org.uk and by
text message.
Finally, you may well be aware that after 30 years in education in Shropshire, 17 of those
years here at Thomas Adams, it is my intention to step down from my post at the end of this
Summer and move into a phase of semi-retirement.
Governors will be working with the Local Authority this term in order to be able to advertise
the post of Headteacher and recruit my successor in time for the new academic year 2013-14.
You will appreciate however that with a good deal of work to be done between now and
September, it has to be ‘business as usual’!
Certainly you can rest assured that all of us at Thomas Adams are very keen that we have a
seamless transition.
