Systems Marine Sanitation System Waste in the holding tank can form methane, an explosive gas. Keep vent open and clear of obstructions. Keep fire and flame away when maintaining the system. It is illegal to dump plastic trash anywhere in the ocean or navigable waters of the United States, including the Great Lakes. The discharge of other types of garbage is permitted outside of specific distance offshore as determined by the nature of that garbage. All recreational boats with installed toilet facilities must have an operable Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) aboard. Vessels 65 feet and under may use a Type I, II, or III MSD. All installed MSD's must be Coast Guard certified. The Holding Tank installed in the Chris- Craft is certified by definition under the regulations and is not specifically labeled. Do not flush foreign objects down the MSD. Damage to the system may result. The Catalina models use a porta potti system as the standard Marine Sanitation System. A Tecma system is available as an option on the Catalina 26 and 29 models. The Marine Toilet Owner’s Manual that comes in your documentation package addresses the use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the waste system. It is your responsibility to become familiar with its contents. The optional Tecma units utilizes a grinding system that grinds all waste before it enters the pump. This system virtually eliminates clogging while consuming very little water. To use, press the “Add Water” button (Figure 3-17) to send a specific quantity of water into the bowl. Press the “Flush” button to begin the automatic flushing cycle. This leaves the water closet clean and dry. The cycle is completely automatic and works on a 12/24 VDC electrical system. Figure 3-17. Systems Optional Holding Tank The Catalina 26 and 29 models offer an optional holding tank (Figure 3-18) with a Tecma head and/or the gray water option. The tank is located in the forward storage area in the deck. Figure 3-18. Holding Tank Arrangement Chris-Craft 3–29
