REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS OF DRUG RELATED INCIDENTS REGION 1 Flathead National Forest - In mid-November, two Flathead valley residents were arrested by Law Enforcement Officers (LEO’s) in a remote section of the Tally Lake Ranger District for possession of approximately two pounds of marijuana with intent to distribute. Officers also seized numerous items including marijuana paraphernalia <strong>and</strong> a digital scale. Kootenai National Forest - An LEO assisted in the arrest of a Canadian citizen involved in allegedly smuggling 113 pounds of BC-bud marijuana <strong>and</strong> approximately 2000 ecstasy tablets into the U.S. across the international border in the Eureka, MT area. The transfer of drugs occurred on National Forest System (NFS) l<strong>and</strong>s administered by the Rexford Ranger District. The arrest was the result of the cooperative efforts between LEI, USBP, ICE <strong>and</strong> Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. The value of the seized drugs is estimated at $600,000. Two men who were found guilty in U.S. District Court earlier this year for conspiracy to manufacture marijuana in various locations on the Fortine Ranger District were sentenced last week. One man was sentenced to serve seven months imprisonment, six months home confinement <strong>and</strong> three years supervised release. The second man was sentenced to serve seven months imprisonment, seven months home confinement <strong>and</strong> three years supervised release. Both were also sentenced to the st<strong>and</strong>ard conditions of federal probation. The case was investigated by the NW Montana LEI zone <strong>and</strong> the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. Idaho Panh<strong>and</strong>le National Forest - On 3/8, an LEO <strong>and</strong> K-9 were requested by the Idaho State Police Narcotics Unit to search a vehicle suspected to be involved in international drug smuggling. The search led to the discovery of a small amount of marijuana <strong>and</strong> a backpack with maps of national forests <strong>and</strong> Canadian border areas, <strong>and</strong> the seizure of $17,000 in cash. 18 USDA Forest Service Law Enforcement <strong>and</strong> Investigations
REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS OF DRUG RELATED INCIDENTS REGION 2 Bighorn National Forest - On 10/19, an LEO worked with DCI <strong>and</strong> DEA after they arrested two suspects who were stashing methamphetamine on NFS l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> using the forest as headquarters for a distribution/delivery operation in the nearby communities. One suspect told the DEA Agent that he did not have a home <strong>and</strong> had been living <strong>and</strong> camping on the forest for several months. Pike National Forest - On 8/22, an LEO <strong>and</strong> K-9 responded with Douglas County Sheriff’s Department Deputies to contact a group shooting in a closed area on the Pikes Peak Ranger District. Forest Protection Officers (FPO’s) had observed some of the group earlier in the day with a keg of beer <strong>and</strong> had heard several different weapons being discharged. Eight people were contacted <strong>and</strong> found to be in possession of five firearms. One person was in possession of a significant amount of marijuana he claimed was for personal use but appeared to be packaged for distribution. The LEO issued violation notices for illegal shooting, operating a vehicle where prohibited <strong>and</strong> possession of marijuana. Gr<strong>and</strong> Mesa, Uncompahgre, <strong>and</strong> Gunnison National Forests - An LEO <strong>and</strong> K-9 were requested to assist a Colorado State Patrol Officer on a traffic stop. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of marijuana, scales (used for distribution), <strong>and</strong> methamphetamine paraphernalia. The driver of the vehicle was arrested. A Forest Service contract employee was recently found guilty of possession of marijuana while on duty on the Gr<strong>and</strong> Mesa National Forest. The charges were a result of an investigation <strong>and</strong> subsequent searches conducted by an LEO <strong>and</strong> K-9. The employee admitted to operating Forest Service equipment while under the influence of the illegal drug. The employee was terminated from his contract position. White River National Forest - On 3/29, a known squatter from the Silverthorne, CO area, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana. In a plea agreement, charges of illegally occupying NFS l<strong>and</strong>s were dropped in exchange for a fine of $200, forfeiture of dangerous weapons seized, <strong>and</strong> a 60 day jail sentence suspended on the conditions that Werner be banned from all use of the Forest for a period of two years. 19 USDA Forest Service Law Enforcement <strong>and</strong> Investigations
