In 1845 at a meeting of the Berlin<br />

Physics Society, which attracted<br />

everyone who was keen on modern<br />

technology, Siemens described<br />

his idea of a synchronous switch<br />

telegraph. One of the members<br />

of the audience was Berlin’s best<br />

mechanic Johann Georg Halske,<br />

who told the presenter that he<br />

would be able to improve the design<br />

and start a small batch production<br />

of the machine. Subsequent events<br />

followed in a frenzy of action.<br />

Siemens and Halske, leaving<br />

aside all other business, quickly<br />

assembled a prototype and were<br />

able to persuade their military<br />

supervisors that the device would<br />

be able to provide the Prussian<br />

army with a quick and reliable<br />

means of communications. Several<br />

months later Siemens was invited<br />
