When asked how tough business<br />
school is, Stephen Love reaches<br />
back to his football-playing days in<br />
college for a comparison. “You end<br />
up beat up and tired,” he says, “but<br />
it is all worth it.”<br />
Part <strong>of</strong> what makes it worth it for<br />
Love is the quality <strong>of</strong> the courses<br />
and the faculty. “The pr<strong>of</strong>essors<br />
both talk the talk and walk the<br />
walk,” he says. “They have been<br />
there and done so much in their<br />
respective areas <strong>of</strong> expertise. Randy<br />
Haykin, who taught my New Venture<br />
Finance class, was employee number<br />
five at Yahoo! and now runs his<br />
own VC firm.”<br />
“Because there were relatively<br />
few students in my class who had<br />
worked in consulting, I’ve found<br />
myself being a resource for their<br />
questions,” says Love. “That’s part<br />
<strong>of</strong> the culture here—everyone is<br />
willing to share their expertise.”<br />
Throughout the curriculum, Love<br />
has recognized many opportunities<br />
to leverage his <strong>Berkeley</strong> <strong>MBA</strong><br />
education. For example, “what I<br />
learned in my Negotiations class has<br />
already proved useful on the job,”<br />
he says. “Now I have a better set <strong>of</strong><br />
skills to handle the push back from<br />
prospects I sometimes encounter in<br />
the sales process.”<br />
