Subject: Qld Govt should release FULL advice opposing referendum
A message from LGAQ President Margaret de Wit
Local Government Minister David Crisafulli has written to all councils saying the Queensland Government will
now advocate the No case in the upcoming referendum. He says advice received by the Government warns the
current wording of the proposed change to the Constitution would allow the Federal Government to put
conditions on funding of local communities. I suggest you call on the Minister to publicly release this advice in
full, just as the LGAQ has done with legal opinions from several sources, including former NSW Supreme Court
chief justice Jim Spigelman, showing that the change would NOT increase the Federal Government?s power
over states or local communities. We should expose this last minute about face by the Government for what it
is, a political tactic. There is too much at stake for your community to be distracted from the true purpose of this
referendum, to protect vital programs such as Roads to Recovery from legal challenge.
