From: Samantha Morris To: Samantha Morris Date: 21/06/2013 2:46:38 PM Subject: Councillors and staff invited to Queensland Landcare Conference To: Councillors, environment and natural resource staff The 2013 Queensland Landcare Conference takes place in Warwick, 27 ? 29 September, hosted by Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group and supported by Southern Downs Regional Council. This year's event will focus on healthy habitats and profitable production. Some seven keynote speakers are confirmed including Major General, the Hon Michael Jeffery, Australia's first National Advocate for Soil Health. Author and science communicator Julian Cribb also joins Shane Joyce, 2012 Winner Carbon Cocky of the Year and Georgie Somerset, President of the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women?s Network. Bill Gammage, author of The Biggest Estate on Earth, Dr Nancy Schellhorn from CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences and Terry McCosker, Director Carbon Link Limited are also on the bill as keynote speakers. These keynote speakers are joined by more than 30 other speakers from across Queensland who will deliver concurrent workshops and presentations throughout the three day program covering topics such as flood recovery, rabbits, catchment care, prickly acacia control, carbon monitoring, stream bed erosion, precision agriculture, habitats, biodiversity, waterway restoration, Reef Rescue, bushfires and landowners, fire and grazing and working with the media. Discounts apply to early bird registrations, which close 15 July. Registration package Keynote speakers The theme of this year's Landcare Conference is Healthy Habitats … Profitable Production Julian Cribb – author of The Coming Famine Julian Cribb is an author, journalist, editor and science communicator. He is principal of Julian Cribb & Associates who provide specialist consultancy in the communication of science, agriculture, food, mining, energy and the environment. His career includes appointments as newspaper editor, scientific editor for The Australian newspaper, director of national awareness for CSIRO, member of numerous scientific boards and advisory panels, and president of national professional bodies for agricultural journalism and science communication. He is a board member of the Secretariat for International Landcare (SILC). His published work includes over 8000 articles, 3000 media releases and eight books. He has received 32 awards for journalism. His internationally-acclaimed book, The Coming Famine explores the question of whether we can feed humanity through the mid-century peak in numbers and food demand. Bill Gammage – author of The Biggest Estate on Earth Bill Gammage is an adjunct professor in the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University (ANU), researching Aboriginal land management. He grew up in Wagga, and was an ANU undergraduate and postgraduate before teaching history at the Universities of Papua New Guinea and Adelaide. He wrote The Broken Years on Australian soldiers in the Great War (1974), Narrandera Shire (1986), The Sky Travellers on the 1938-39 Hagen-Sepik Patrol in New Guinea (1998), and The Biggest Estate on Earth: How Aborigines made Australia (2011). He served the National Museum of Australia for three years as Council member, deputy chair and acting chair. He was made a Freeman of the Shire of Narrandera in 1987, a fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences in 1991, and an AM in 2005. Major General Michael Jeffrey AC, AO(Mil), CVO, MC (Retd) – Former Governor-General & Australia’s first official Advocate for Soils Born in Wiluna, WA in 1937, Michael Jeffery graduated from the Royal Military College into Infantry, serving operationally in Malaya, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, where he was awarded the Military Cross and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. From 1993-2000 he was the Governor of Western Australia. In 2000 he established, in Perth, a not for profit strategic research institute – Future Directions International (FDI). From 2003 to 2008 he served as Governor- General of Australia where his key interests were in youth, education and landscape regeneration. He is Chairman of FDI, Outcomes Australia, and Soils for Life and is patron of numerous charitable organisations. He was recently appointed by the Prime Minister as the National Advocate for Soil Health and as the Australian Envoy for The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust.
