Cary Academy
Founded in 1996 and opening its doors in 1997, Cary Academy is a learning community
committed to providing a challenging curriculum that reflects the school’s mission of
discovery, innovation, collaboration, and excellence. As an independent, collegepreparatory
school, Cary Academy creates a secure and nurturing environment for
students in grades 6-12 to discover new talents, interests and to develop academically,
physically and emotionally. Enrollment during 2008-2009 is 718, along with
135 faculty and staff.
Presenting a curriculum strongly grounded in the sciences and humanities, Cary
Academy remains firmly committed to meeting the needs of each individual student.
Small classes allow for close student-faculty relationships which are then strengthened
outside the classroom by teachers assuming the roles of advisors, coaches and
mentors. State of the art technology enables innovative learning, while our fine arts
program allows the creativity of each student to blossom.
From the initial tentative steps to the graduation march, Cary Academy plays an integral
part in developing independence and shaping integrity in every student. With
every personal and academic achievement, Cary Academy students not only gain
knowledge and skills, but build confidence, determination, and the will to succeed.
Students at Cary Academy have the opportunity to participate in a well-rounded band
program, taught by band director Eric Grush. Upper School courses include Honors
Jazz Band, Concert Band, Jazz Improvisation, and two levels of Music Theory/
Composition. Middle School courses include Middle School Band, Beginning Band, and
Music Technology Exploration. Extracurricular activities include Middle School Jazz
Band, Upper School Drumline, Pep Band, and Electronic Music Club.
A Brief History of the CA Jazz Bands
In the Spring of 1998, twenty students in grades 6-9 formed an after school Jazz
Band Club. In ’98-‘99 rehearsals moved to twice a week before school at 7:00AM,
and in 2000 the Jazz Band attended its first adjudicated festivals. Fall of 2000
marked the formation of MS Jazz Band - a club that met once per week for 45 minutes
and was open to all 6th - 8th grade students, regardless of their enrollment in
Band class. US Jazz Band was now recognized as a class, but we still met before
school twice per week. In the spring of 2003, US Jazz Band entered its first competition
in Williamsburg, VA, earning first place in class and a Superior rating.
In ‘03-’04, US Jazz Band became Honors Jazz Band, a class requiring instructor permission
to enroll, and met Tuesday/Thursday for 55 minute periods. This year also
marked the US Jazz Band's performance at the inaugural NCJR-E Jazz Festival. In
‘04-’05, US Jazz Band earned a Superior rating and the Grand Champion Award at
the Music Festivals Competition in Williamsburg, VA. In ‘05-’06, the Upper School
Honors Jazz Band began splitting into combos several times per year and, in the
spring of ’08, the MS and US Jazz Bands and Jazz Combo 3 earned Superior ratings
at the Dixie Classic in Richmond, VA.
Cary Academy has placed students in the All-Region Jazz Band four out of the past
five years. This year, we welcome back adjunct faculty member Cecil Johnson as we
showcase the music of the Kansas City Jazz tradition!
Eric S. Grush, Director of Bands web1.caryacademy.org/facultywebs/eric_grush/
Eric Grush grew up in Raleigh, graduated from Enloe High School, and was selected
to be among the first class of NC Teaching Fellows. He attended UNCG
as a Fletcher and a Presser Scholar and graduated summa cum laude with a degree
in music education. Teachers who have greatly influenced Mr. Grush include
Thomas Sibley, David Rockefeller, Joel Adams, Elizabeth Huss, David Lewis and
Dr. John Locke. In 1997, he became a charter faculty member at Cary Academy
and began to develop the instrumental music program. Mr. Grush is most proud to have been
married for 11 years to his supportive and amazingly patient wife, Marianne, and to be
“Daddy” to six-year-old Katie and three-year-old Will.
president of the North Carolina Jazz Educators (IAJE). From 1990-1993 Mr.
Johnson taught saxophone and jazz improvisation as an adjunct faculty member
at UNC Chapel Hill and he also played in the UNC-CH faculty jazz quintet.
In 1999, he recorded and toured with The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Kathryn Wayland's Jazz
Squad and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Other artists with whom Mr. Johnson has performed
include: NC Symphony, Natalie Cole, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Gladys Knight, and Doc
Severinsen. He has provided music education for 31 years as an educational representative
for Pearson, McFadyen and Burrage Music Companies. Mr. Johnson has been saxophone instructor
and adjunct faculty member assisting with the Jazz Program at Cary Academy since
2005.
Lil ‘ Darlin Warner Bros Jazz - First Year Charts
Arr. Roy Phillippe 3-5 Sax/ 2-3 Tpt/ 1-3 Tbn/ 3-4 Rhythm
This tune (AB form) is from a collection “designed for the first year Jazz Ensemble” but some
arrangements are not simple. We have used it with our Middle and Upper School Bands. Optional
parts are included for Flute, Tuba, F Horn, and Baritone TC. We simplified the chord
changes and the written solos are being played.
How High the Moon Kjos - Cutting the Changes
Antonio Garcia Jazz Improvisation via the Key Centers
AB form. Tony was one of the first clinicians we had for the NCJR-E Jazz Ensemble. Along
with typical play-along tracks, his book includes a CD-Rom with printable rhythm section parts,
music theory, and more. The CD has 2 channels – bass/drums only or piano/drums only. We
used Audacity to slow the tempo. Tony’s approach is great for beginning improvisers.
I Got Rhythm Warner Bros Jazz - Aproaching the Standards, vol. 1
Dr. Willie Hill Jazz Improvisation Series (3 volumes)
AABA (song form). Dr. Hill is former President of both IAJE and MENC. These books provide
play-along tracks and a 2 nd track with professional musicians playing the head and improvising
for students to “listen, analyze, transcribe, and commit the tunes to memory”. Also included
are composers’ insights, a discography, rhythm section comping and bass lines, scales/chords,
and licks and tricks for improvising.
Red Cross Sher Music - Real Easy Book 3
Ed. Chuck Sher A Short History of Jazz (Fake Book)
AABA (song form) – rhythm changes. “It is a fakebook of 63 tunes . . . plus scales for soloing,
piano voicings, sample bass lines, guitar diagrams, a quick overview of all the major types of
Jazz, and a short history of the evolution of Jazz”. Also included are sample drum grooves
for all the styles in the book and sample comping patterns. We used Band In a Box software
to create an accompaniment track.
Lester Leaps In Hal Leonard – Jazz Classics for the Young Ensemble
Arr. Mark Taylor 5 Sax/ 4 Tpt/ 4 Tbn/ 4 Rhythm/ opt. vibes
Our re-arrangement uses only the head and solo sections with basic rhythm changes.
Program and Resource Notes
One O'clock Jump Warner Bros Jazz - Ultimate Big Band Sounds Vol. 1
Arr. Frank Comstock 3-5 Sax/ 2-3 Tpt/ 2-3 Tbn/ 3-4 Rhythm
This collection is “for Jazz Ensembles from 9 to 15 players”. The arrangement opens
with a Basie piano solo in concert B-flat and changes key to concert D-flat for “ad lib
choruses”. Our re-arrangement is simplified 12 bar blues changes entirely in concert
B-flat. Holding true to how the Basie Band performed it, riffs are repeated for multiple
choruses, with soloists often playing over the band.
Blues in Hoss Flat Hal Leonard - Easy Jazz Ensemble Chart
Arr. Mark Taylor 4-5 Sax/ 3-4Tpt/ 3-4Tbn/ 3-4Rhythm/ opt. vibes
This medium shuffle tune is excellent for teaching articulation and style. We simplified
the 12 bar blues in E-flat for consistency throughout. The ending is re-arranged
to skip straight to the final chord of the coda. Flutes play Alto Sax 1 - 8va, Clarinets
play Tenor Sax 2 in range, Bass Clarinet plays Bari Sax in range, Tuba plays Trombone
4 - 8vb. We used Finale software to re-write the parts.
Every Day I Have the Blues Hal Leonard - Vocal Solo with Jazz Ensemble Series
Arr. Roger Holmes 5 Sax/ 4Tpt/ 4Tbn/ 4 Rhythm
Our vocalist uses the arrangement’s lead sheet and the Combo plays basic 12 bar
blues in F. The horns play the “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” head to lead in
to the vocalist. Combo members and vocalist sing call and response on “Every Day”,
followed by a solo section. The final chorus stops after ii V for a tag ending.
Now’s the Time Hal Leonard - Jazz Play-Along vol. 26, Charlie Parker
This 12 bar blues in B-flat is also in the Aebersold vol. 6 (All-Bird). Aebersold has
more choruses and is better for practicing. Hal Leonard books are better for performing
as they offer a track with the head as well as accompaniment. Some Aebersold
book accompaniments are part of Smart Music software. Use Smart Music to
change key, tempo, or instrumentation. Also use free Audacity software to edit,
change key, or change tempo. We used Audacity to cut out choruses of recorded
accompaniments to save time today.
