Olivier Cadiot’s poetry is explosive. It explodes his characters’ entire personalities; their inner
thoughts and desires. And it explodes language. Cadiot’s most recurrent figure, loosely based
on Robinson Crusoe, is a man grappling to make sense of the world around him. He is alone
on an island of made-up rules. He writes his own reality, makes up a love affair, and creates
heroic scenarios. And he desperately tries to stay sane by busying himself with all sorts of
apparently meaningless tasks. He makes lists, spies on people, and generally creates order
out of the hodgepodge of what he sees. He wants to belong, to be a part of nature and right
in the middle of the ambient conversation. But the zealousness with which he performs these
tasks ultimately becomes more meaningful than the tasks themselves. Because, in the end,
he is still at the bottom of the social ladder. Cadiot’s style, for its explosive language and
extraordinary situations, lends itself remarkably to the stage. It is fragmented, creating a
tragicomic world where nothing and everything makes sense. And it is delightfully playful,
challenging, disturbing, and above all, refreshingly original.
